Increased depth of pancreas incisure on computed tomography as an independent predictor for T2DM.

We aim to identify CT-based biomarkers in the pancreas for predicting both the presence and prognosis of T2DM. Between January and December 2021, a population of 2246 subjects undertaken health-check were recruited. Between January 2023 and June 2024, another 244 hospitalized patients with T2DM were recruited. Depth of pancreas incisure (DPI), CT attenuation, and thickness were measured using an unenhanced CT scan. Compared to individuals without T2DM, DPI was significantly increased in subjects with T2DM, regardless of whether they were of normal weight or obese. After adjusting for age, sex,

High-Pressure Freezing EM Tomography of Entire Ribbon Synapses in the Retina.

In the retina, presynaptic active zones in photoreceptors and bipolar cells are distinguished by a plate-like "ribbon" linked to the plasma … chemical fixation, which causes exocytotic artifacts that may influence RRP size. Here, we used EM tomography to compare anatomical features of rod bipolar cell ribbon synapses in retinas, from rats of either sex, prepared by chemical fixation or high-pressure freezing (HPF), a technique that minimizes artifactual exocytosis. We found that ribbon dimensions …

Development of a Brain Catheter for Optical Coherence Tomography in Advanced Cerebrovascular Diagnostics.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been extensively utilized in cardiovascular diagnostics due to its high resolution, rapid imaging capabilities; however, its adaptation for cerebrovascular applications remains constrained by the narrow, tortuous anatomical structure of cerebral vessels. To address these limitations, this study introduces a cerebrovascular-specific OCT (bOCT) catheter, an advanced adaptation of the cardiovascular OCT (cOCT) catheter, with significant structural modifications for improved access to brain blood vessels. The bOCT catheter incorporates a braided wire within a…

Serial Two-Photon Tomography of the Whole Marmoset Brain for Neuroanatomical Analyses.

Serial Two-photon tomography (STPT) is a technique to image a mass of tissue in its three-dimensional shape by combining two-photon imaging with automatic stage control and microtome slicing. We successfully implemented this technique for tracing the axonal projections in the marmoset brain. Here, the detailed experimental procedures that resulted in reliable volumetric imaging of the whole marmoset brain are described. A key process for successful imaging was the removal of meninges surrounding the brain, which interferes with slicing. A big advantage of this methodology is that the sliced se…

Radiation exposure of chest and abdomen computed tomography in paediatric trauma patients.

Combined chest and abdomen computed tomography (CT) in paediatric trauma patients is rare and typically reserved for severely injured patients due to concerns about the potential radiation risks associated with CT in children. This study aims to analyse the radiation exposure of chest and abdomen CT in paediatric patients following trauma resuscitation. A retrospective single-centre study was conducted on patients aged 0-<15 years who underwent CT in the trauma resuscitation unit between 04/2020 and 08/2023. Patients were categorised into three age groups (AGs) (I: 0-<5years, II: 5-<10 years, …

A scoping review of photon-counting detector computed tomography in cardiovascular imaging.

Photon-counting detector computed tomography (PCD-CT) employs direct-conversion detectors that record the arrival and energy of individual photons, enabling high-resolution, multi-energy cardiovascular imaging. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus from January 2021 through September 2025 and included 59 studies. Owing to heterogeneity in study designs, protocols, and endpoints, the findings were synthesized narratively across five domains (coronary, myocardial, structural/valvular, pulmonary-cardiopulmonary function, and aortic/visceral/peripheral arteries). In coronary imaging, a routine-p…

Three-Dimensional Computed Tomography for the Safe Management of Esophageal Foreign Body.

Foreign body ingestion is a common pediatric emergency, with esophageal impaction requiring prompt evaluation and management. This case presents a school-aged female patient who ingested a hard candy that became lodged in her esophagus. Despite the absence of respiratory distress, there was uncertainty about the exact location due to the radiolucent nature of the foreign body. Three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) was performed after conventional radiographs proved non-diagnostic. The 3D-CT images clearly demonstrated the exact location of the candy in the upper esophagus, confirmed ai…
