SHORT Syndrome: Systematic Appraisal of the Medical and Dental Phenotype.

INTRODUCTION: SHORT syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant condition described by its acronym of short stature, hyperextensibility of joints and/or inguinal hernia, ocular depression, Rieger abnormality, and teething delay. Individuals have a distinct progeroid craniofacial appearance with a triangular face, frontal bossing, hypoplastic or thin alae nasi, large low-set ears, and mandibular retrognathia. OBJECTIVES: To systematically appraise the literature and update the clinical phenotype with emphasis on the dental condition. DESIGN: A systematic literature search was carried out to update

Deletion of the last two exons of FGF10 in a family with LADD syndrome and pulmonary acinar hypoplasia.

Pulmonary acinar hypoplasia (PAH) and lacrimo-auriculo-dento-digital (LADD) syndrome have both been associated with loss-of-function variants in, or deletions of FGF10. Here we report a multi-generational family with seven members manifesting varying features of LADD syndrome, with one individual dying in early infancy of PAH. Whole genome sequencing in one family member identified a 12,158 bp deletion on chromosome 5p12 that removes two of the three exons of FGF10. Allele-specific PCR demonstrated that all affected family members, including the individual with PAH, carried the 12 kb deletion.

Dental and orthodontic follow-up in nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome patient with odontogenic keratocystic tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (NBCS) is a rare genetic condition affecting multiple organs including the maxillofacial and dental region. The surgical removal of the odontogenic keratocystic tumors (OKT), the high rate of recurrence leads to a iatrogenic tooth loss requiring dental care. The aim of this study is therefore to describe the dental and orthodontic management, and to assess the impact of surgery on facial growth and oral development. METHODS: A retrospective study including 14 patients with GGS, followed at the Necker Enfants Malades Hospital. The study was carr

Developmental demands contribute to early neuromuscular degeneration in CMT2D mice.

Dominantly inherited, missense mutations in the widely expressed housekeeping gene, GARS1, cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2D (CMT2D), a peripheral neuropathy characterised by muscle weakness and wasting in limb extremities. Mice modelling CMT2D display early and selective neuromuscular junction (NMJ) pathology, epitomised by disturbed maturation and neurotransmission, leading to denervation. Indeed, the NMJ disruption has been reported in several different muscles; however, a systematic comparison of neuromuscular synapses from distinct body locations has yet to be performed. We therefore anal

Diffuse brain connectivity changes in Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1a patients: a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Changes of brain structure and function have been described in peripheral neuropathies. The aim of our study was to systematically investigate possible modifications of major large-scale brain networks using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 3-T MRI brain scans were acquired of right-handed genetically confirmed CMT1A patients and age- and sex-comparable healthy controls. Patients also underwent clinical and electrophysiological examinations asse

Outcome of orthodontic treatment in subjects with periodontal disease. Part III: a CBCT study of external apical root resorption.

BACKGROUND: No evidence is present on the risk for external apical root resorption (EARR) during orthodontic treatment (OT) of adult patients with periodontal disease. AIM: To examine EARR after OT in subjects with periodontal disease and to analyse how intrusion and change in inclination of the most proclined maxillary incisors influence EARR. METHODS: The study included 50 patients with periodontal disease. Sub-gingival debridement by ultrasonic instrumentation supplemented with hand instruments was performed by experienced dental hygienist after baseline examination for all patients. For

Tooth Resorption in Spanish Domestic Cats: Preliminary Data.

The objective of this study was to collect preliminary data about tooth resorption (TR) from cats treated at the Odontology Service (September 2016-June 2018), part of a University Veterinary Hospital in Spain, with specific emphasis on TR distribution per tooth. Diagnosis was based on visual/tactile inspection and intraoral dental radiographs. This cross-sectional study was carried out on 59 adult cats (27 females, 32 males). TR occurred in 39/59 cats (66.1%; 95% CI: 54.0%-78.2%). The median number of lesioned teeth per TR-affected animal was 3. A highly significant but weak correlation was f

Comparison of Lateralizing Calcaneal Osteotomies for Varus Hindfoot Correction.

BACKGROUND: There is limited consensus on the optimal operative technique for correcting heel varus in patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease. This comparative study evaluated the ability of 4 lateralizing calcaneal osteotomies, with and without Dwyer wedge resection and coronal rotation of the posterior tuberosity, to correct severe heel varus. METHODS: The computed tomography (CT) scan of a teenage CMT patient with severe hindfoot varus was used to create 3-dimensional (3D)-printed models of the talus, calcaneus, and cuboid. A custom jig facilitated precise replication of the osteo

[Dental care to the Israeli Defense Forces' fighters].

The combat soldiers of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) get comprehensive dental care. The service of a combat soldier in the IDF can be divided into two periods: the period of training that includes basic training and advanced training lasting six to eight months, followed by a period of operational activity within the framework of the battalions. Throughout his service, the combat soldier is exposed to dental disease including dental caries, periodontal disease and dental trauma attributed to his terms of service with low availability to maintain adequate oral hygiene in high intensity train

Detailed Audiological Evaluation of a Patient with Xeroderma Pigmentosum with Neural Degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive condition characterized by extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet light. Individuals with XP lack the ability to repair DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) damage caused by ultraviolet radiation, leading to sunburn and increased susceptibility to skin cancers. Approximately 25% of patients also exhibit neural degeneration, which includes progressive mental deterioration, cortical thinning, and sensorineural hearing loss. PURPOSE: Herein, we describe the audiological and genetic findings in a patient with XP subtype D with neural degener

Tetracycline: a cure all?

Tetracyclines are used to treat a range of oral conditions. Their efficacy in the treatment of periodontitis is well established, and they are authoritatively recommended in the management of avulsed teeth. There is a growing evidence base to support the use of tetracycline to treat recurrent aphthous stomatitis, but its use in white spongy naevus is limited to a handful of case reports. The mechanism of action in these conditions is either unknown or indicated to be through the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP). The use of a single agent to treat diverse oral conditions has import

Cervical facial necrotizing fasciitis with medistinic spread from odontogenic origin. Two case reports.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon soft tissue infection, usually caused by toxin-producing virulent bacteria especially in mediastinum. It is characterized by widespread fascial necrosis primarily caused by Streptococcus hemolyticus characterized by necrosis of skin, subcutaneous tissues, fasciae, and muscles. It usually occurs in adults and is most often localized to the abdominal wall, the extremities, the perineum, the pelvis, and the thoracic region. Localization to the head and neck area is rarely encountered. Descending necrotising mediastinitis is a form of mediastinitis caused by od

Pathological mandibular fractures: a review of the literature of the last two decades.

Pathological mandibular fractures are rare, accounting for fewer than 2% of all fractures of the mandible. They could be defined as fractures that occur in regions where bone has been weakened by an underlying pathological process. Pathological fractures usually may follow surgical interventions such as third molar removal or implant placement, result from regions of osteomyelitis, osteoradionecrosis, and bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, occur because of idiopathic reasons or be facilitated by cystic lesions, benign, malignant, or metastatic tumors. Pathological mandibular frac

Cytokines and VEGF induction in orthodontic movement in animal models.

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that aims at the resolution of dental malocclusions. The specialist carries out the treatment using intraoral or extraoral orthodontic appliances that require forces of a given load level to obtain a tooth movement in a certain direction in dental arches. Orthodontic tooth movement is dependent on efficient remodeling of periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, correlated with several biological and mechanical responses of the tissues surrounding the teeth. A periodontal ligament placed under pressure will result in bone resorption whereas a periodontal lig

Characteristics of individuals with hydrocephalus and their dental care needs.

Hydrocephalus is considered a congenital disease affecting the central nervous system, and is characterized by accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the lateral ventricles of the brain causing progressive ventricular dilatation. This review paper reports on the oral characteristics of persons with hydrocephalus and discusses their dental care needs. It has been reported that patients with hydrocephalus can present chronological changes in the eruption of their teeth, changes in the occlusion, greater accumulation of plaque, and have a higher caries prevalence. Regular dental visits are needed
