BACKGROUND: We report a surgical case of urothelial carcinoma of the renal pelvis, resulting in diagnostic difficulties on cytological examination.

A retrospective case-control study was designed to assess risks for elevated post void residual (PVR) in women with pelvic floor disorders. The 1,399 women underwent evaluation including standardized questionnaire, examination, and catheterized PVR. We studied on subjective and objective findings of 69 patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis. A spiral urethral prosthesis was inserted with use of local anesthesia in 22 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia who had long-term indwelling bladder catheters (mean 13 months) and anesthetic contraindications to an operation (American Society of Anesthesiologists rating of 4 in 86% of the patients). External urinary device (EUD) use and modification of the electronic medical record system with defaulting EUD for selected indications significantly decreased the utilization of indwelling urinary catheters while there was no observed significant reduction in catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The introduction of EUD alone may not decrease catheter-associated urinary tract infections and a comprehensive approach involving various strategies from different perspectives will be necessary, particularly diagnostic stewardship.
