BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS), previously dismissed at contaminants, have now emerged as an important cause of nosocomial infections especially in patients with implants and prosthetic devices. They are a well-known cause of bloodstream infections, urinary tract infections, wound infections, prosthetic valve endocarditis and eye infections. This study was conducted with an aim to identify CoNS at the species level from various clinical samples and determine the antimicrobial resistance pattern of these isolates.
METHODS: This cross sectional study was carried out from Se

The transmission of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factors (VFs) between wildlife and livestock is an emerging concern for animal and human health, especially in shared ecosystems. ARGs enhance bacterial survival against antibiotics, while VFs contribute to infection processes, and the microbiome composition influences host health. Understanding microbial exchange at the wildlife-livestock interface is essential for assessing risks to both animal and human health. This study addresses the gap in knowledge by investigating the microbial composition, ARGs, and VFs in fecal m

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) USA300 isolates have been recognized globally, not only in community but also in healthcare settings. USA300 isolates were initially resistant only to methicillin, but resistance to non-β-lactams has emerged with time. To evaluate the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of USA300 isolates in Stockholm, we conducted a nine-year retrospective study. Of 5359 consecutive MRSA cases in Stockholm, isolates from 285 cases were USA300 strains according to the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis pattern. Of these cases, repeated isolates with alte

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus pneumoniae, the leading pathogen of bacterial infections in infants and the elderly, is responsible for pneumococcal diseases with severe morbidity and mortality. Emergence of drug-resistant strains presented new challenges for treatment and prevention. Vaccination has proven to be an effective means of preventing pneumococcal infection worldwide. Detailed epidemiological information of antibiotic susceptibilities and serotype distribution will be of great help to the management of pneumococcal infections.
METHODS: A total of 881 S. pneumoniae isolates were collected

Mycotic aortic aneurysms caused by Campylobacter fetus (C. fetus) are rare, and the optimal regimens and duration of antimicrobial therapy remain unclear. We present a case of a man in his 70s with hypertension and chronic heavy alcohol consumption who presented with an eight-day history of persistent fever. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a mycotic infrarenal aortic aneurysm. Empiric ceftriaxone and vancomycin were switched to minocycline after cultures identified levofloxacin- and ampicillin-resistant, but minocycline-susceptible C. fetus. The patient

Infectious complications following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are uncommon but potentially devastating, particularly in hemodialysis patients who experience immunosuppression and elevated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) colonization rates. We present the case of a 68-year-old woman on hemodialysis who developed an MRSA-infected femoral pseudoaneurysm and contralateral septic shoulder arthritis five days after femoral-access PCI. Despite both conditions traditionally warranting surgical intervention, conservative management with six weeks of targeted intravenous

The objective of this study was to determine the presence of C. difficile in seafood, to identify the ribotype of isolates, to reveal the distribution of their toxinogenic genes and to evaluate the antibiotic susceptibility of C. difficile strains. For this purpose, a total of 755 seafood samples were analysed. Sixteen isolates were verified as C. difficile [14 (5.28%) bivalve molluscs and 2 (2.0%) shrimp] whereas none of the ribotypes detected were human pathogenic ribotypes. Among C. difficile isolates only one of the bivalve mollusc (RT003) was found to be toxigenic (A+B+CDT+) that had also

Microorganisms, including pathogens that cause skin, respiratory, and urinary tract infections, are widespread in our environment. Despite routine cleaning with bleach and disinfectants, the transmission of pathogens still occurs, leading to potential infectious diseases. This study aimed to determine the antibacterial effect of two coating formulas against common environmental pathogens like Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella sp., vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The antibacterial coatings e

Soft tissue infection is an uncommon presentation of Cryptococcus in the absence of immunosuppression. Most infected patients present with pneumonia or meningitis, often with signs of disseminated disease, which may be fatal. We present a case of an 81-year-old mildly immunocompromised woman with multiple comorbidities, who presented with an extensive soft tissue infection on her right medial thigh. Superficial skin culture grew vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus; however, both initial and subsequent antibacterial therapies failed to resolve the infection. Subsequent biopsy revealed abundant ye
