The Impact of Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract Exercises on Multidimensional Measures of Voice in Dysphonia: A Randomized Controlled Study.

PURPOSE: The data on the effectiveness of the semi-occluded vocal tract exercise (SOVTE) program over multiple sessions are not yet sufficiently documented, and there is a need for future research within structured therapeutic frameworks. Investigating therapeutic techniques within a treatment paradigm may help to evaluate the long-term effectiveness and better management of voice disorders. STUDY DESIGN: The design of this study was a prospective, single-blind, randomized controlled trial. METHOD: The study was a four-arm trial-(a) lip trill group-experimental group 1, (b) straw phonation g

Extensive investigation of geometric effects in sonoreactors: Analysis by luminol mapping and comparison with numerical predictions.

This investigation focuses on the influence of geometric factors on cavitational activity within a 20kHz sonoreactor containing water. Three vessels with different shapes were used, and the transducer immersion depth and liquid height were varied, resulting in a total of 126 experiments conducted under constant driving current. For each one, the dissipated power was quantified using calorimetry, while luminol mapping was employed to identify the shape and location of cavitation zones. The raw images of blueish light emission were transformed into false colors and corrected to compensate for re

Effects of Laryngeal Manual Therapy on Primary Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD-1): Implications for MTD-1 Type.

OBJECTIVE: The study investigated effects of laryngeal manual therapy on different types of primary muscle tension dysphonia (MTD-1). STUDY DESIGN: Interventional pre-test post-test design. METHODS: Thirty-two traditional Iranian singers (mean age of 36.75 ± 9.34 years.) diagnosed with MTD-1, 8 female and 24 male, and recruited by convenience sampling completed the study. MTD-1 was classified as Morrison and Rammage's types 1-5, based on standardized criteria (1993). Pre-post-treatment measures were based on visual ratings of the larynx, acoustic analyses, auditory-perceptual assessments of

Between-ear sound frequency disparity modulates a brain stem biomarker of binaural hearing.

The auditory brain stem response (ABR) is an evoked potential that indexes a cascade of neural events elicited by sound. In the present study we evaluated the influence of sound frequency on a derived component of the ABR known as the binaural interaction component (BIC). Specifically, we evaluated the effect of acoustic interaural (between-ear) frequency mismatch on BIC amplitude. Goals were to 1) increase basic understanding of sound features that influence this long-studied auditory potential and 2) gain insight about the persistence of the BIC with interaural electrode mismatch in human us

Descriptive epidemiology of vestibular schwannomas.

Vestibular schwannomas, commonly termed acoustic neuromas, arise from the vestibular branch of the eighth cranial nerve (acoustic nerve) and are benign, slow-growing brain tumors that negatively impact patient quality of life. They are thought to account for the majority of intracranial nerve sheath tumors. To describe incidence rate patterns and trends of primary nerve sheath tumors of the brain/CNS and the subset of vestibular schwannomas in two population-based incidence registries, data were obtained from 11 Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS) collaborating state reg

Single olivocochlear neurons in the guinea pig. II. Response plasticity due to noise conditioning.

Previous studies have shown that daily, moderate-level sound exposure, or conditioning, can reduce injury from a subsequent high-level noise exposure. We tested the hypothesis that this conditioning produces an increased activity in the olivocochlear efferent reflex, a reflex known to provide protection to the cochlea. Guinea pigs were conditioned by a 10-day intermittent exposure to 2-4 kHz noise at 85 dB sound pressure level. This conditioning is known to reduce damage from a subsequent high-level exposure to the same noise band. Responses to monaural and binaural sound were recorded from si

Cerebellopontine angle tumor in a patient with a maternally inherited SDHD gene mutation.

Acoustic neuromas are the most common tumor in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) but are rare in the general population. Paragangliomas are rarer still and, in a minority of cases (20%), are known to be caused by errors in the SDHD gene. Mutations in this gene are highly penetrant when inherited paternally but not maternally. We present the first reported case of a patient with a CPA tumor and a maternally inherited SDHD gene mutation.

Lesions of the cerebellopontine angle and internal auditory canal: diagnosis and differential diagnosis.

Schwannoma of the eighth cranial nerve (acoustic neuroma) is, by far, the most common cerebellopontine angle lesion. There is, however, a wide variety of differential diagnostic possibilities that must be considered when viewing images of patients with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), vertigo, and dizziness. This communication is intended to provide the reader with an approach to this problem. Detailed anatomy of the region is also included in this communication.

[Initial information on adjustment of speech processor of the cochlear implant].

Adjustment of a speech processor of the cochlear implant is the first procedure in rehabilitation of patients after cochlear implantation. Influence of setting understated and overstated threshold levels of current perception on processing of a speech signal was studied. The results of the study show that only precise estimation of current perception threshold and comfortable loudness allow transmitting maximal acoustic information for each patient.

The influence of magnetic resonance tomography on diagnosis and therapy in patients with intracranial manifestation of neurofibromatosis (Recklinghausen disease).

Recent research into the natural course of neurofibromatosis has revealed an outstandingly high proportion of central nervous system malignancies as well as cancers of various other organs. Due to the lack of ionizing radiation, the extraordinary reconstruction in the frontal and parasaggital planes as well as the diagnosis of intracanalicular acoustic neurinomas and intraorbital tumors, magnetic resonance tomography (MRT) is indicated for control of patients with neurofibromatosis.

Precocious cardiac orienting in a human anencephalic infant.

An anencephalic infant, 3 to 6 weeks old, responded to acoustic stimulation with cardiac decelerations typical of the response pattern seen in normal, older infants. Such precocity implies unexpected competence of lower brain structures and suggests that, in the normal infant, feedback from immature higher centers may sometimes interfere with rather than modulate the functioning of lower centers.

Clinical reliability of posterior fossa scintigraphy.

Radioisotope imaging of the brain is considerably less useful in posterior fossa lesions than in supratentorial diagnosis, due to the peculiar technical difficulties and biological characteristics of infratentorial lesions. Exceptions are acoustic neurofibromas and probably meningiomas, which can be reliably detected. The importance is stressed of making skull and chest radiographs at the time of the examination, in order to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of the scintigraphic result.

[The diagnosis of conductive hearing loss by tympanometry (author's transl)].

The use of electronic impedance measuring instruments to determine the acoustic impedance of the ear drum is very helpful in the diagnosis of middle ear diseases. Fluid filled middle ear spaces, otosclerosis and tympanosclerosis can be differentiated easily. In addition tube and facial nerve testing is possible. All tests can be done in less than 10 minutes for both ears.

Combining Stimulation Protocols to Probe Memory Consolidation-Commentary on Hausdorf et al. 2025.

A recent study by Hausdorf et al. reported that combining closed-loop acoustic stimulation with transcranial direct current stimulation during sleep does not improve memory consolidation. This contrasts with past studies that reported a beneficial effect of each method individually. In this commentary, I discuss the relevance of the study in the current literature and offer potential explanations for this absence of effect.

Hemodynamics-driven mathematical model of first and second heart sound generation.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first hemodynamic-based heart sound generation model embedded in a complete real-time computational model of the cardiovascular system. Simulated heart sounds are similar to experimental and clinical measurements, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Our model can be used to investigate the relationships between heart sound acoustic features and hemodynamic factors/anatomical parameters.
