Neurochemical changes in the rat occipital cortex and hippocampus after repetitive and profound hypoglycemia during the neonatal period: an ex vivo ¹H magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

The brain of a human neonate is more vulnerable to hypoglycemia than that of pediatric and adult patients. Repetitive and profound hypoglycemia during the neonatal period (RPHN) causes brain damage and leads to severe neurologic sequelae. Ex vivo high-resolution (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was carried out in the present study to detect metabolite alterations in newborn and adolescent rats and investigate the effects of RPHN on their occipital cortex and hippocampus. Results showed that RPHN induces significant changes in a number of cerebral metabolites, and such changes

Sex steroids and schizophrenia.

The peak in incidence for schizophrenia is during late adolescence for both sexes, but within this time frame the peak is both earlier and steeper for males. Additionally, women have a second peak in incidence following menopause. Two meta-analyses have reported that men have an overall ∼40% greater chance of developing schizophrenia than do women (Aleman et al., 2003; McGrath et al., 2004). These and other findings have led to the suggestion that ovarian hormones may be protective against schizophrenia. Less explored is the potential role of testosterone in schizophrenia, although disruptions

Scaling of pharmacokinetics across paediatric populations: the lack of interpolative power of allometric models.

AIM: The objective of this investigation was to assess the performance of an allometric model as the basis for interpolating drug exposure in the context of pharmacokinetic bridging across paediatric subpopulations. METHODS: Midazolam was selected as a paradigm compound. Two nonlinear mixed effects models were developed to describe midazolam pharmacokinetics in infants, toddlers and adults (model 1) and in children and adolescents (model 2). Subsequently, systemic drug exposure, expressed in terms of the area under the concentration vs. time curve (AUC), in children and adolescents was interp

Is allergic rhinitis a trivial disease?

BACKGROUND: Asthma and rhinitis often coexist, which potentially increases the disease severity and can negatively impact a patients' quality of life. However, there are few reports based on data obtained from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood examining asthma severity in combination with rhinitisrelated symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate whether current rhinitis and current rhinoconjunctivitis are associated with the development of asthma or its increasing severity in Brazilian adolescents. METHODS: The prevalence of current asthma was correlated with the prevale

Prevalence of skin disorders in school children in southwest Nigeria.

UNLABELLED: Physiological and structural changes of the pilosebaceous unit occur typically in adolescence leading to increase in sebaceous and apocrine secretions. Common disorders in this age group usually include acne vulgaris and infections with yeast organisms especially in a tropical climate. OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that some disorders are more prevalent in adolescents in the western world when compared to the developing ones. METHOD: We looked at the prevalence of skin disorders in secondary school children in Ibadan, Southwest Nigeria. After obtaining relevant bio-data, stude

Living in partner-violent families: developmental links to antisocial behavior and relationship violence.

Links between living in a partner-violent home and subsequent aggressive and antisocial behavior are suggested by the "cycle of violence" hypothesis derived from social learning theory. Although there is some empirical support, to date, findings have been generally limited to cross-sectional studies predominantly of young children, or retrospective studies of adults. We address this issue with prospective data from the Rochester Youth Development Study (RYDS), an ongoing longitudinal investigation of the development of antisocial behavior in a community sample of 1,000 urban youth followed fro

Working out the kinks: testing the feasibility of an electronic pain diary for adolescents with arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Current approaches to evaluating pain in children with chronic arthritis suffer from methodological problems. A real-time data capture approach using electronic diaries has been proposed as a new standard for pain measurement. However, there is limited information available regarding the development and feasibility of this approach in children. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to pilot test the e-Ouch electronic pain diary in terms of compliance and acceptability in adolescents with arthritis to further refine the prototype. METHODS: A descriptive study design -- with

Responsiveness of gonadotropin secretion to infusion of an opiate-receptor antagonist in hypogonadotropic individuals.

We tested the hypothesis that suppressive effects of endogenous opiate substances are involved in certain hypogonadotropic states. For this purpose, we studied gonadotropin secretion in idiopathic hypopituitarism (five children), constitutionally delayed adolescence (five boys), and Kallmann's syndrome (three men). Endogenous opiate pathways were antagonized by the iv infusion of naloxone hydrochloride at a dose previously shown to elicit a prompt and significant increase in serum levels of LH in normal men. Under these conditions, naloxone did not increase serially sampled serum concentration

Genetic approach to ambiguous genitalia and disorders of sex development: What clinicians need to know.

Genetic tools such as microarray and next-generation sequencing have initiated a new era for the diagnosis and management of patients with disorders of sex development (DSDs). These tools supplement the traditional approach to the evaluation and care of infants, children, and adolescents with DSDs. These tests can detect genetic variations known to be associated with DSDs, discover novel genetic variants, and elucidate novel mechanisms of gene regulation. Herein, we discuss these tests and their role in the management of patients with DSDs.

Associations between Snacking and Weight Status among Adolescents 12-19 Years in the United States.

Snacking is a significant contributor to energy intake among adolescents, but its association with weight status is unclear. To elucidate this association, data from 6545 adolescents (12-19 years) in the 2005-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were analyzed. The mean number of daily snack occasions, mean snack size, and mean snack energy density were examined by weight classification (body mass index (BMI)-for-age percentiles: normal weight (NW) <85th; overweight (OW) ≥85th to <95th; obese (OB) ≥95th). Models included all snacking parameters, mean meal size, demogra

The Way Forward for Mechanism-Based Therapeutics in Genetically Defined Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Rare genetically defined neurodevelopmental disorders with increased risk of autism have recently become an entry point for autism-related drug discovery. Through exploration of downstream effects of the pathological mutations, specific mechanistic pathways have been identified as dysregulated. The identification of shared mechanisms across forms of autism opens the door for the development of novel "mechanism-based therapeutics." However, confidence in the therapeutic mechanism does not diminish the need for well-designed clinical trials.

Adiposity in adolescents: change in actual BMI works better than change in BMI z score for longitudinal studies.

PURPOSE: Longitudinal epidemiologic studies often relate adiposity changes to suspected causal factors. In growing adolescents, this becomes complicated. Many investigators use within-child change in body mass index (BMI) z scores (Delta z) from sex- and age-specific BMI charts developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These charts, derived from cross-sectional data, may not represent BMI growth patterns of real children. Furthermore, because cross-sectional BMIs are not Gaussian, these z scores are from month-specific transformed distributions, with possible unintende

Neural vulnerability to stress in adolescents: a longitudinal study using polyconnectomic scoring of depression risk.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a sensitive period of brain development when perceived stress can shape emotional and cognitive outcomes. However, it remains unclear how neural vulnerability modulates these effects. METHODS: In a longitudinal cohort of 407 adolescents, we assessed perceived stress, emotional symptoms, and cognitive function at baseline and follow-up. Neural vulnerability was indexed using polyconnectomic scoring for major depressive disorder (PCS-MDD), derived from large-scale functional connectivity patterns. An independent cohort of 80 adolescents with clinically diagnosed depre

Parent-child discrepancies in reports of pre- and early adolescent level of personality functioning.

Given the research consensus that personality disorder often onsets in adolescence, more work is needed to investigate parent-child discrepancies in reporting on personality disorder, particularly during the pre- and early adolescent period when more significant impairment in personality functioning may be developing or can already be observed. The current study examined concordance of parent- and child-reported level of personality functioning (LPF, as defined in the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders) among pre- and early adolescents and examined the extent to which this concor

Identity and Psychosis Risk in Sexual Minority Youth: Temporal Dynamics of Identity and Suspiciousness Through Experience Sampling Methodology.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESES: Sexual minority youth are at increased risk for psychotic experiences, potentially due to identity-related difficulties. We hypothesized that sexual minority youth would report greater identity difficulties, and that these difficulties would be associated with heightened suspiciousness in daily life. Finally, we examined whether these associations differ between sexual minority and heterosexual adolescents. STUDY DESIGN: Experience Sampling Method (ESM) and questionnaire data were collected from 1913 Flemish adolescents (aged 11-20). Identity functioning was assesse

Neuropsychiatric Phenotype and Treatment Challenges in 47,XYY Syndrome: A Narrative Review with a Case Series of Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: 47,XYY syndrome is a relatively common sex chromosome aneuploidy that remains largely underdiagnosed. While its somatic phenotype is often mild, growing evidence indicates a substantial burden of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric morbidity. However, the characterization of the neuropsychiatric phenotype across development, particularly during adolescence, and the associated treatment challenges remain incomplete. OBJECTIVES: To provide a comprehensive narrative review of the neuropsychiatric phenotype of 47,XYY syndrome and to illustrate clinical complexity and treatment response

The relationship between the circadian protein PER and adolescent depression: the mediating effect of aberrant functional connectivity of suprachiasmatic nucleus-orbitofrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: As a major contributor to the development of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescents, circadian rhythm disruption has been linked with aberrant circadian protein levels and suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) activity. However, it remains unclear how the function of SCN underlies the association between circadian rhythm disruption and depression among adolescents. METHODS: We recruited 165 subjects, including 114 first-episode drug-naïve adolescents with MDD and 51 healthy controls (HC). All completed clinical assessments, venous blood sampling for detecting circadian proteins (C
