Atherosclerosis of coronary blood vessels - local or systemic inflamation?

The presence of atherosclerotic lesions in the blood vessels is a predisposition for the development and occurrence of acute ischaemic attacks. Bigger atherosclerotic lesions in the coronary blood vessels cause lumen occlusion, which is a cause of acute myocardial infarction. Endothelial dysfunction is defined as an ability of the endothelium to produce vasorelaxing nitric oxide (NO), or deregulation of the other vasoactive substances, such as angiotensin II and endothelin [13]. This definition describes endothelial dysfunction as an improper vasomotor constriction of the vessel, that leads to…

Elevated arteriolar cerebral blood volume in prodromal Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Neurovascular alterations have been implicated in the pathophysiology of Huntington's disease (HD). Because arterioles are most responsive to metabolic alterations, arteriolar cerebral blood volume (CBVa) is an important indicator of cerebrovascular regulation. The objective of this pilot study was to investigate potential neurovascular (CBVa ) abnormality in prodromal-HD patients and compare it with the widely used imaging marker: brain atrophy. METHODS: CBVa and brain volumes were measured with ultra-high-field (7.0-Telsa) magnetic resonance imaging in seven prodromal-HD patient…

Autonomic nerve activity and blood pressure in ambulatory dogs.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between cardiac autonomic nerve activity and blood pressure (BP) changes in ambulatory dogs is unclear. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypotheses that simultaneous termination of stellate ganglion nerve activity (SGNA) and vagal nerve activity (VNA) predisposes to spontaneous orthostatic hypotension and that specific β₂-adrenoceptor blockade prevents the hypotensive episodes. METHODS: We used a radiotransmitter to record SGNA, VNA, and BP in eight ambulatory dogs. Video imaging was used to document postural changes. RESULTS: Of these eight …

Celiac disease screening among healthy blood donors in Hungary.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CD) is a common chronic systemic autoimmune disease in Europe. The prevalence of CD in Hungarian children is estimated at 1.2 - 1.4 %. To date, however, no data on adult CD prevalence has been published. AIMS: Analysis of the serological evidence for CD among Hungarian adults in order to estimate its prevalence. METHODS: Plasma samples from 4155 healthy blood donors were anonymously screened for circulating IgA autoantibodies by a highly sensitive tissue transglutaminase ELISA. Positive results were subsequently confirmed by endomysial antibody test. RESULTS: End…

Blood donor iron status: are we bleeding them dry?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines the recent research on the prevalence, determinants and importance of low iron in blood donors, and on the efforts to reduce or prevent iron depletion in donor populations. RECENT FINDINGS: Female donors, especially younger women, are at highest risk for donation-induced low iron, but menopausal women and high-frequency donors of both sexes also face considerable risk for iron depletion. Predonation screening for hemoglobin contributes little information on donor iron status. Consumption of supplemental iron is helpful in preventing or reversing low iro…

Seroprevalence of human parvovirus B19 in healthy blood donors.

BACKGROUND: Human parvovirus B19 is an emerging transfusion transmitted infection. Although parvovirus B19 infection is connected with severe complications in some recipients, donor screening is not yet mandatory. To reduce the risk of contamination, plasma-pool screening and exclusion of highly viraemic donations are recommended. In this study the prevalence of parvovirus B19 in healthy blood donors was detected by ELISA. METHODS: A total of 1633 samples were screened for IgM and IgG antibodies against parvovirus B19 by ELISA. The initial 540 samples were screened for both IgM and IgG class …

Autophagy in blood cancers: biological role and therapeutic implications.

Autophagy is a cell recycling process the molecular apparatus of which has been identified over the past decade. Autophagy allows cells to survive starvation and inhospitable conditions and plays a key role in numerous physiological functions, including hematopoiesis and immune responses. In hematologic malignancies, autophagy can either act as a chemo-resistance mechanism or have tumor suppressive functions, depending on the context. In addition, autophagy is involved in other important aspects of blood cancers as it promotes immune competence and anti-cancer immunity, and may even help enhan…

Methadone in healthy goats - pharmacokinetics, behaviour and blood pressure.

The pharmacokinetics and effects of the opioid methadone on behaviour, arterial blood pressure, heart rate and haematocrit were studied in goats. Two goats received methadone (0.2mg/kg) intravenously and the terminal half-life was 88 and 91 min, the volume of distribution 8.4 and 6.1L/kg, and clearance 86 and 123 mL/min/kg. In a crossover study eight goats received methadone (0.6 mg/kg) or 0.15M NaCl subcutaneously (SC). After SC administration bioavailability was complete and the terminal half-life was 215 ± 84 min (mean ± SD), Tmax 31 ± 15 min and Cmax 45 ±11 ng/mL. Blood pressure and haemat…

Platelet concentrates, from whole blood or collected by apheresis?

Platelet concentrates can be isolated from donated whole blood with the platelet-rich plasma-method or the buffy coat-method. Alternatively, platelets can be obtained by apheresis, harvesting the platelets but returning all other cells to the donor. The quality and characteristics of platelets during storage are affected by a number of factors, such as anticoagulant, centrifugation and processing after collection, and pre- or post storage pooling, but when comparing literature on the various methods, most differences balance out. To have sufficient platelets to treat an adult patient, whole-bl…

Blood alcohol concentration of suicide victims by partial hanging.

During the investigated period, 2000-2007, 4249 suicides were reported in Slovenia, and 1061 autopsies of suicide deaths from the central, northwestern, and southwestern parts of Slovenia were conducted at the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Ljubljana. To identify a possible role of alcohol use in the selection of suicide method blood samples were collected during medicolegal autopsies of suicide victims in order to establish their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level at the time of death. The study group consisted of 844 suicide victims that used violent suicide methods and 174 suicide v…

PP062. Characteristic changes of systemic blood pressure in eclampsia.

AIM: It was found that eclampsia might be caused by vasogenic edema of brain as the results of breaking autoregulation of cerebral blood flow due to possibly the systemic increase in blood pressure (BP). In the present study, we investigated characteristic changes of systemic BP just after the onset of eclampsia. METHOD: Four eclamptic women during pregnancy were participated. Two had labor pains. Two were given anti-hypertensive drugs due to severe hypertension. BP in both systolic and diastolic, and mean arterial pressure (MAP), before and after onset of eclampsia were evaluated. RESULT: B…

Maternal magnesium sulphate exposure predicts neonatal magnesium blood concentrations.

Tocolytic use of magnesium sulphate is associated with excess neonatal mortality and has been proposed to follow a dose-response relationship. This study aimed to define the correlation between maternal and neonatal magnesium blood concentrations. Magnesium blood concentrations were retrospectively obtained for mother-neonate pairs who were cared for at an Intermountain Healthcare facility from January 2009 to October 2011. Complete data were available for 231 mother-neonate pairs. Mean (±SD) maternal and neonatal magnesium concentrations were 5.43±1.69 and 2.98±0.94 mg/dL, respectively. Mater…

Normative levels of Interleukin 16 in umbilical cord blood.

OBJECTIVES: The need for early and accurate prediction of outcome in hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains critical. We have previously demonstrated that Interleukin 16 (IL-16) is raised in the umbilical cord blood (UCB) of infants with moderate and severe HIE and has the potential to be developed as a predictive biomarker. Normal reference ranges for IL-16 in UCB have not been previously described. The aim of this study was to determine normative levels of IL-16 in full term neonates using UCB following uncomplicated deliveries and to examine the effect of labour on cord IL-16 values…

Intraepithelially entrapped blood vessels in oral carcinoma in-situ.

It can be difficult to make a certain diagnosis in case of an oral borderline malignant lesion on hematoxylin-eosin-stained sections only. Furthermore, assessment of surgical margins of borderline lesions is difficult with the naked eye. We set out to determine the topographical distribution of capillary blood vessels within the epithelial zone and to assess its use as an aid for histopathological diagnosis and a framework for clinical assessment of lesional margins using optical techniques, such as narrow-band imaging (NBI) endoscopy. Capillary blood vessels entrapped in the epithelial compar…

Blood sampling and hemolysis affect concentration of plasma metabolites.

Two experiments were carried out to reveal and quantify plasma metabolites that are sensitive to hemolysis and animal stress due to the blood sampling procedure (vein puncture vs. catheter). In Exp. 1, 48 sows were fed 4 diets either once (0800 h) or twice daily (0800 h and 1500 h) in a crossover design and blood was collected after restraint via vein puncture 1, 4, 11, and 23 h after morning feeding. Plasma samples were categorized as without or with minor or major hemolysis [clear (n = 218), yellow (n = 97), or red (n = 37)] upon centrifugation. Plasma NEFA (P < 0.001) was lower in hemolyzed…
