Equine Multiple Congenital Ocular Anomalies (MCOA) syndrome is a heritable eye disorder mainly affecting silver colored horses. Clinically, the disease manifests in two distinct classes depending on the horse genotype. Horses homozygous for the mutant allele present with a wide range of ocular defects, such as iris stromal hypoplasia, abnormal pectinate ligaments, megaloglobus, iridociliary cysts and cataracts. The phenotype of heterozygous horses is less severe and predominantly includes iridociliary cysts, which occasionally extend into the temporal retina. In order to determine the genetic

The aim of this study was to identify skeletal variations in the lumbosacral junction (LSJ) of the German shepherd dog (GSD) compared with other large breeds. The radiographic traits of the LSJ were investigated in a group of 733 GSDs and a control group of 334 dogs of other breeds that were matched in terms of size. Nine morphological and 17 morphometric traits were recorded and analysed. Furthermore, the possibility of a genetic basis for these radiographic features was evaluated by calculation of genetic variance components. Five of the morphological and 14 of the morphometric traits varied

Renal dysplasia (RD) in dogs is a complex disease with a highly variable phenotype and mode of inheritance that does not follow a simple Mendelian pattern. Cox-2 (Cyclooxgenase-2) deficient mice have renal abnormalities and a pathology that has striking similarities to RD in dogs suggesting to us that mutations in the Cox-2 gene could be the cause of RD in dogs. Our data supports this hypothesis. Sequencing of the canine Cox-2 gene was done from clinically affected and normal dogs. Although no changes were detected in the Cox-2 coding region, small insertions and deletions of GC boxes just ups

Malignant lymphoma is one of the most common malignant tumours occurring in dogs. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is an excellent, specific diagnostic procedure used to assess pathological processes in lymph nodes. The aim of the present study was to conduct a cytopathological analysis of lymphoma in dogs and to analyse some epidemic aspects of occurrence of lymphoma in 100 dogs using Giemsa stained slides. Samples were obtained by fine needle aspiration biopsy, fine needle non-aspiration biopsy, lymph node impression smears and by examination of body cavity effusions. The determination o

Canine leptospirosis has been described as having re-emerged in North America around the mid-1990s, with a change in the epidemiology of the infecting serovars responsible for the disease emergence. A retrospective case-control study was conducted to examine the re-emergence of seroprevalent cases of canine leptospirosis in Ontario using serology submission records from 1406 dogs from January 1, 1998 to December 31, 2006. The data collected [results of the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), veterinary clinic postal code, age, sex, neutering status, and breed] were analyzed by multivariable

The transient elevated plasma growth hormone (GH) levels that occur at a young age in giant breed dogs may have consequences in adult life. The aim of this study was to investigate whether excess juvenile GH has consequences for cardiac function and morphology. To simulate the naturally occurring juvenile hypersomatotropism in giant breed dogs, elevated plasma GH and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentrations were induced in six miniature poodles (GH dogs) by daily administration of supraphysiological doses of GH starting at 12 weeks of age. Eight miniature poodles of the same age tha

An epidemiological study of gastrointestinal helminths of dogs (Canis familiaris) in two veterinary clinics in Ibadan, Nigeria, was conducted between January 2001 and December 2002. Faecal samples collected from 959 dogs were processed by modified Kato-Katz technique and then examined for helminth eggs. The results of the study showed that 237 (24.7%) of the dogs examined were infected with different types of helminths. The prevalences for the various helminth eggs observed were: Toxocara canis 9.0%, Ancylostoma spp. 17.9%, Toxascaris leonina 0.6%, Trichuris vulpis 0.5%, Uncinaria stenocephala

An epidemiological study was carried out to identify factors associated with the risk of cryptosporidian infection in cats. Faecal samples from 200 domestic cats were collected in the small animal clinic at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Turin (north-west Italy). The faecal samples were analysed for the presence of Cryptosporidium species oocysts using a centrifugation concentration floatation method. For each cat, age, sex, breed, indoor/outdoor status, diet, diarrhoea and presence of other enteric parasites were analysed for association with Cryptosporidium species infection. Cryptosp

Drug-induced hypersensitivity reactions (DHRs) are a major problem, in large part because of their unpredictable nature. If we understood the mechanisms of these reactions better, they might be predictable. Their unpredictable nature also makes mechanistic studies very difficult, especially prospective clinical studies. Animal models are vital to most biomedical research, and they are almost the only way to test basic hypotheses of DHRs, such as the involvement of reactive metabolites. However, useful animal models of DHRs are rare because DHRs are also unpredictable in animals. For example, s

Abnormalities in eyelid position and function can lead to chronic irritation of cornea and conjunctiva. Corneal ulceration, vascularization and pigmentation are common consequences. Loss of vision, or loss of the globe may be the end result. The combination of ptosis and entropion of the upper eyelid is commonly seen in breeds with abundant forehead skin folds. Treatment options include surgical reduction of skin folds, suspending the brows, enforced secondary granulation of the upper eyelid, or a combination of procedures. Lid-shortening procedures reduce corneal exposure, improve functional

Stereotypies are the most common abnormal behaviours in sows. Stereotypies are repeated, relatively invariable sequences of movements which have no obvious purpose. Mu opioid receptor is a member of G protein-coupled receptor family, distributed in the pain transduction region in the brain and related emotion and behavior regions where influence the animal neural reaction and behavior. The possibility of the MOR gene as the candidate gene to affect the stereotyped behavior traits in sows was discussed in this study. The primer of sow MOR gene exon III partial sequence was designed to analyze s

Alopecia areata (AA) is a non-scarring, inflammatory form of hair loss. Human and animal model observations suggest that AA is an autoimmune mediated disease. Genetic influence has been clearly demonstrated in many other autoimmune diseases and one would expect that AA is no exception. AA in rodent models involves genetic susceptibility and it is possible to cross breed the AA phenotype to unrelated rodent strains. Segregation analysis of rodent breeding programs suggests the involvement of several dominant and secondary genes. The increased frequency of AA in genetically related individuals, …
