Long-term results of various anterior capsulotomies and radial tears on intraocular lens centration.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term effects of various anterior capsulotomies and radial tears on intraocular lens (IOL) centration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-five eyes of 87 senile cataract patients operated with extracapsular technique were evaluated in IOL tilt and decentration with a new method of measurement. According to the type of anterior capsulotomy and number of radial tears, five groups were constituted as, can opener, envelope, continous curvilinear capsulorrhexis (CCC), CCC with one radial tear (relaxing incision at quadrant 12), and CCC with two relaxing inc

Capsular specificity in temperate phages of Klebsiella pneumoniae is driven by diverse receptor-binding enzymes.

Virulent bacteriophages infecting Klebsiella pneumoniae often show capsule-driven host tropism due to the presence of capsule-specific depolymerases. Yet for temperate phages the genetic and functional basis of such capsular specificity remains less well understood. Depolymerases appear unexpectedly rare in prophage genomes, raising unresolved questions about which prophage genes mediate capsular specificity, whether this apparent scarcity reflects biological or ecological differences versus annotation limitation, and whether prophage-encoded receptor-binding proteins (RBPs) are functionally a

An essentially radiation-transparent body coil integrated with a patient rotation system for MR-guided particle therapy.

BACKGROUND: The pursuit of adaptive radiotherapy using MR imaging for better precision in patient positioning puts stringent demands on the hardware components of the MR scanner. Particularly in particle therapy, the dose distribution and thus the efficacy of the treatment is susceptible to beam attenuation from interfering materials in the irradiation path. This severely limits the usefulness of conventional imaging coils, which contain highly attenuating parts such as capacitors and preamplifiers in an unknown position, and requires development of a dedicated radiofrequency (RF) coil with cl

O-Acetylation of Capsular Polysialic Acid Enables Escherichia coli K1 Escaping from Siglec-Mediated Innate Immunity and Lysosomal Degradation of E. coli-Containing Vacuoles in Macrophage-Like Cells.

Escherichia coli K1 causes bacteremia and meningitis in human neonates. The K1 capsule, an α2,8-linked polysialic acid (PSA) homopolymer, is its essential virulence factor. PSA is usually partially modified by O-acetyl groups. It is known that O-acetylation alters the antigenicity of PSA, but its impact on the interactions between E. coli K1 and host cells is unclear. In this study, a phase variant was obtained by passage of E. coli K1 parent strain, which expressed a capsule with 44% O-acetylation whereas the capsule of the parent strain has only 3%. The variant strain showed significantly re

[Investigation of various virulence factors of Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from nosocomial infections].

Klebsiella pneumoniae is an opportunistic pathogen that commonly affects immunosuppressed patients and causes nosocomial infections. K.pneumoniae has a variety of virulence factors, especially capsule polysaccharide, hypermucoviscosity (HV), fimbriae, toxins and determinants for iron acquisition. The aim of this study was to detect the virulence factors in K.pneumoniae strains isolated from nosocomial infections in two years. Fifty three K.pneumoniae strains isolated from the samples of patients with nosocomial infections in the Medical Microbiology Laboratory of Selcuk University Faculty of M

[Arthroscopic anterior capsular release in medial contracture of the shoulder secondary to brachial plexus birth palsy. Preliminary results].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Retraction of the shoulder in internal rotation is observed in 25% of children with brachial plexus birth palsy (C5, C6 +/- C7). Early bone and joint deformities affecting the glenohumeral joint are the consequences. The stiff internal rotation requires surgical release which can involve the capsule and ligaments, muscles, or both. Internal release can be combined with muscle transfer to improve active external rotation. We report the results obtained with arthroscopic anterior capsular release combined with latissimus dorsi transfer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 1999 thro

Lens cell survival after exposure to stress in the closed capsular bag.

PURPOSE: Despite recent improvements in IOL design posterior capsule opacification (PCO) remains a significant clinical problem after cataract surgery. The Perfect Capsule device (Milvella, Ltd., Epping, Australia) permits the introduction and subsequent removal of potentially toxic agents into the closed capsular bag. The present purpose was to compare the relative effectiveness of exposing cells within the human capsular bag with a range of stresses with clinical potential and to compare the response to the same agents when applied to rabbit capsular bags and to cultured human lens cells. Stepwise loss of shoulder stabilizers induces humeral head migration and progression of cuff tear arthropathy in a rat model.

BACKGROUND: Cuff tear arthropathy (CTA) is a distinctive form of shoulder osteoarthritis characterized by superior migration of the humeral head, cartilage degeneration, synovitis, and subchondral bone collapse. Although deficiencies of the rotator cuff (RC), superior capsule, and long head of the biceps (LHB) tendon are clinically implicated in CTA, the relative contribution of each structure and the quantitative relationship between humeral head migration and joint degeneration remain unclear. METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to 4 experimental models: resection of the s

Presence of hypervirulence-associated determinants in Klebsiella pneumoniae from hospitalised patients in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Klebsiella (K.) pneumoniae is a ubiquitous Gram-negative bacterium and a common coloniser of animals and humans. Today, K. pneumoniae is one of the most persistent nosocomial pathogens worldwide and poses a severe threat/burden to public health by causing urinary tract infections, pneumonia and bloodstream infections. Infections mainly affect immunocompromised individuals and hospitalised patients. In recent years, a new type of K. pneumoniae has emerged associated with community-acquired infections such as pyogenic liver abscess in otherwise healthy individuals and is therefore te

Airflow controlled droplet bioprinting enables high-throughput generation of iPSC-derived thymic organoids with in vivo T cell functionality.

The thymus is a critical organ for T cell generation. It is composed of distinct layers of thymic epithelial cells (TECs) that coordinate a … fully program T cells in vitro and in vivo through manual encapsulation of iPSCs in sodium-alginate capsules during differentiation. To translate this capability toward clinically relevant throughput, we present a novel method of air-jetting droplet bioprinting which is capable of producing 21,500 aggregates per milliliter of bioink. We conducted a systema …

Multidisciplinary approaches for the prevention and management of capsular contracture: a review of clinical, pharmacological, and biomaterial-based strategies.

Capsular contracture (CC) is the most frequent complication associated with silicone-based breast implant surgery and often leads to multiple revision surgeries. The implantation of a foreign object triggers the formation of a fibrous capsule around the silicone implant. Over time, excessive and uncontrollable fibrosis leads to capsule thickening and contraction, resulting in severe pain, discomfort, and implant distortion, all hallmarks of CC. Various strategies have been proposed to prevent or mitigate CC. One common strategy is surface modification of the silicone implant by introducing tex

Species-origin identification of the deer in the Purtier Placenta Live Stem Cell Therapy by DNA typing.

Purtier Placenta Live Stem Cell Therapy is a food supplement by Riway Singapore Pte. Ltd., claimed to contain living deer placenta stem cells together with 11 other active ingredients. It is also promoted as maintaining health and youthfulness and as being supported by numerous patents and research trials. Individual ingredients are accompanied by many other statements implying that Purtier Placenta can alleviate or cure diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. However, none of these claims is traceable in clinical trial registries, and the mechanism allowing stem cel

Adrenohepatic Adhesion/Fusion Mimicking Hepatic Invasion: Two Cases of Benign Right Adrenal Lesions and a Review of the Literature.

Background and Clinical Significance: Adrenohepatic fusion (AHF) represents a developmental anatomical variant chracterised by direct continuity between the right adrenal cortex and hepatic parenchyma, often accompanied by partial or complete absence of the intervening fibrous capsule and periadrenal fat plane. In contrast, adrenohepatic adhesion (AHA) denotes a close apposition of the two organs with a shared capsule, but without actual parenchymal intermingling. AHF/AHA becomes most clinically relevant when a lesion arises in the right adrenal gland. In this setting, cross-sectional imaging

Extensive Cochlear Otosclerosis: CT-MRI Correlation and the Diagnostic Value of Contrast Enhancement.

Otosclerosis is a chronic disorder of the otic capsule. It is characterized by abnormal bone remodeling, which may extend beyond the fenestral region and involve the cochlea and other structures of the bony labyrinth. There are two main types of otosclerosis-retrofenestral (cochlear) and fenestral, the latter of which is much more common. We present multimodal imaging findings of extensive bilateral cochlear otosclerosis in a 59-year-old woman with chronic bilateral sensorineural hearing impairment, classified as grade 3 in the right ear and complete deafness in the left ear.
