Novel Antioxidant Collagen Peptides of Siberian Sturgeon (Acipenserbaerii) Cartilages: The Preparation, Characterization, and Cytoprotection of H2O2-Damaged Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs).

For making full use of aquatic by-products to produce high value-added products, Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) cartilages were degreased, mineralized, and separately hydrolyzed by five kinds of proteases. The collagen hydrolysate (SCH) generated by Alcalase showed the strongest 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH·) and hydroxide radical (HO·) scavenging activity. Subsequently, thirteen antioxidant peptides (SCP1-SCP3) were isolated from SCH, and they were identified as GPTGED, GEPGEQ, GPEGPAG, VPPQD, GLEDHA, GDRGAEG, PRGFRGPV, GEYGFE, GFIGFNG, PSVSLT, IELFPGLP, LRGEAGL, and RGEP…

Good clinical outcomes after patellar cartilage repair with no evidence for inferior results in complex cases with the need for additional patellofemoral realignment procedures: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Focal, patellar cartilage defects are a challenging problem as most cases have an underlying multifactorial pathogenesis. This systematic review of current literature analysed clinical results after regenerative cartilage repair of the patella with a special focus on the assessment and treatment of existing patellofemoral malalignment. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify articles reporting clinical results after cartilage regenerative surgeries of the patella using the PubMed and Scopus database. The extracted data included patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS)…

Decreased Expression of Heat Shock Protein 47 Is Associated with T-2 Toxin and Low Selenium-Induced Matrix Degradation in Cartilages of Kashin-Beck Disease.

Recent evidence suggests a role of type II collagen in Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) degeneration. We aimed to assess the abnormal expression of heat shock protein 47 (HSP47) which is associated with a decrease in type II collagen and an increase in cartilage degradation in KBD. Hand phalange cartilages were collected from KBD and healthy children. Rats were administered with T-2 toxin under the selenium (Se)-deficient diet. ATDC5 cells were seeded on bone matrix gelatin to construct engineered cartilaginous tissue. C28/I2 and ATDC5 cells and engineered tissue were exposed to different concentrati…

Mechanotransduction and Stiffness-Sensing: Mechanisms and Opportunities to Control Multiple Molecular Aspects of Cell Phenotype as a Design Cornerstone of Cell-Instructive Biomaterials for Articular Cartilage Repair.

Since material stiffness controls many cell functions, we reviewed the currently available knowledge on stiffness sensing and elucidated what is known in the context of clinical and experimental articular cartilage (AC) repair. Remarkably, no stiffness information on the various biomaterials for clinical AC repair was accessible. Using mRNA expression profiles and morphology as surrogate markers of stiffness-related effects, we deduced that the various clinically available biomaterials control chondrocyte (CH) phenotype well, but not to equal extents, and only in non-degenerative settings. Amp…

EXPERIMENTAL SYPHILIS IN THE RABBIT : VI. AFFECTIONS OF BONE, CARTILAGE, TENDONS, AND SYNOVIAL MEMBRANES. PART 3. SYPHILIS OF THE POSTERIOR EXTREMITIES WITH OTHER AFFECTIONS OF A MISCELLANEOUS TYPE.

A systematic study was made of the affections of bone, cartilage, tendons, and synovial membranes which occurred in a series of rabbits with generalized syphilis. Localized infection of this group of structures was found to be of very frequent occurrence. The parts involved were, in the order of their frequency, the facial and cranial bones and cartilages, the bones, tendons, and joints of the feet and legs, the cervical and caudal vertebrae, the ribs, and the sternum. These infections often gave rise to characteristic manifestations of disease which could be detected without difficulty by ins…

Moxibustion Regulates the Imbalance of Cartilage Degradation and Repair in Knee Osteoarthritis Rabbits via the SDF-1/CXCR4 Axis: Is Stimulating Heat-Sensitized Acupoints More Efficacious?

BACKGROUND: This study investigated whether moxibustion, particularly at heat-sensitized acupoints, exerts therapeutic effects on knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and whether these effects are associated with the modulation of the SDF-1/CXCR4 signaling axis, a key regulator of cartilage metabolism. METHODS: A KOA model was induced in rabbits, which were then randomized into control (n=6), model (n=6), and moxibustion groups. Following a 14-day moxibustion intervention, the moxibustion group was further classified into heat-sensitive moxibustion (HSM, n=6) and non-heat-sensitive moxibustion (NSM, n=6…

Thyroid-cartilage and anterior-laryngeal electrodes provide higher and more frequently adequate electromyographic signals in intraoperative neuromonitoring during thyroid surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Endotracheal tube electrodes are commonly used for intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) during thyroid and parathyroid surgery, but tube displacement and inconsistent vocal fold contact may compromise electromyographic signal quality. Thyroid cartilage and anterior laryngeal electrodes offer an alternative recording interface that is less dependent on endotracheal tube position. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare thyroid cartilage or anterior laryngeal recording electrodes with endotracheal tube electrodes in patients undergoing thyroid or parathyroid surger…

Design and accuracy evaluation of a new surgical instrument for determining cartilage thickness on unworn posterior femoral articular surfaces intraoperatively in kinematically aligned total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Kinematic alignment (KA) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) strives to restore limb and knee alignments to native (i.e. pre-arthritic state) which in turn requires that the posterior femoral joint line be restored to native. However, restoration is challenging when the posterior femoral articular surface is worn since the cartilage thickness is unknown. A method that holds promise is to measure thickness on the contralateral unworn posterior condyle and use this to predict thickness on the worn condyle. Hence, the purpose was to describe the design and accuracy evaluation of a new surgi…

Persistent magnetic resonance imaging-derived static anterior tibial translation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is associated with elevated cartilage T2 relaxation times but not serum biomarkers.

PURPOSE: Persistent, static anterior tibial translation (sATT) alterations following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) may influence cartilage health. T2 relaxation times and serum biomarkers of cartilage degradation/bone resorption provide insight into osteoarthritis development. The relationship between sATT and these markers is unknown. We aimed to determine if changes in sATT are associated with early signs of osteoarthritis development, preoperatively and 6 months post-ACLR. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study (Level 2) of 29 participan…

Long-term clinical outcomes following arthroscopic lateral retinacular release with concomitant cartilage procedures in patients with isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis: a mean 11-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Isolated patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA) remains a challenging condition, particularly in patients with persistent symptoms despite conservative treatment. Arthroscopic lateral retinacular release (LRR) has been considered a treatment option for patients with lateral retinacular tightness; however, long-term clinical outcomes following LRR combined with concomitant cartilage procedures remain insufficiently investigated. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term clinical outcomes of arthroscopic LRR combined with cartilage procedures in carefully selected patients with isolat…

Femoral cartilage variability affects the accuracy of kinematic alignment and imageless navigation in total knee arthroplasty: A prospective study from the FP-UCBM Knee Study Group.

PURPOSE: Kinematic alignment (KA) and imageless computer-assisted surgery in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) typically compensate for cartilage wear by applying a standard 2-mm adjustment. However, recent concerns have emerged regarding the accuracy of this assumption. This study aimed to assess, for the first time in vivo, the femoral cartilage thickness on the unworn side in a consecutive series of TKA patients. The hypothesis was that significant inter-individual variability exists, thereby challenging the fundamentals of the calipered KA technique and imageless computer-assisted TKA. METHOD…
