Maternal expressed emotion as a predictor of emotional and behavioral problems in low birth weight children.

The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which maternal emotions expressed toward low birth weight infants (<2500 gm) at six months of age predicted emotional and behavioral problems at two years of age. With a sample of 83 mother-infant dyads, a Revised Five Minute Speech Sample (R-FMSS) was used to measure the Expressed Emotion (EE) constructs of Negative EE (criticism, hostility), Positive EE (positive remarks, warmth) and Overinvolved EE. Problem behaviors were measured at two years of the child's age utilizing the Child Behavior Checklist/2-3. Infant temperament was contro

Measuring abuse stress and negative cognitive appraisals in child sexual abuse: validity data on two new scales.

The validity of two measures assessing degree of stress associated with sexual abuse was examined in a sample of 48 girls who had been sexually abused. The Checklist of Sexual Abuse and Related Stressors (C-SARS) assessed negative life events that were part of or were related to the abuse, and the Negative Appraisals of Sexual Abuse Scale (NASAS) assessed negative cognitive appraisals of threat, harm, or loss associated with the abuse. Total scores for victim reports of both stressful events and negative appraisals were positively and significantly related to two other measures of abuse severi

Prevalence and Correlates of Vitamin D Deficiency among Young South African Infants: A Birth Cohort Study.

Early-life vitamin D deficiency is associated with adverse child health outcomes, but the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its correlates in infants remains underexplored, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and its correlates among young infants in South Africa. This study included 744 infants, aged 6-10 weeks from the Drakenstein Child Health Study, a population-based birth cohort. Infants were categorized into distinct categories based on serum 25(OH)D concentration level including deficient (<50 nmol/L), insufficient (50-…

Neuropathic pain is associated with poor health-related quality of life in adolescents with sickle cell disease: A preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathic pain is associated with poor health-related quality of life (HRQL) in pain conditions other than sickle cell disease (SCD); this relationship in SCD is unknown. We investigated this relationship and hypothesized neuropathic pain is associated with poor HRQL in adolescents with SCD. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of patients with SCD ages 13-18 years during baseline health. Primary outcome was HRQL, assessed by the PedsQL SCD Module (child self-report, parent proxy report). PedsQL is scored from 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better HRQL. Neuropa

Barriers to uptake of early infant HIV testing in Zambia: the role of intimate partner violence and HIV status disclosure within couples.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of pediatric HIV through uptake of infant HIV testing is critical for access to treatment and child survival. While structural barriers have been well described, a greater understanding of social and behavioral factors that may relate to maternal uptake of early infant HIV testing services is urgently needed. The aim of this study was to explore how gender power dynamics within couples affect HIV-positive women's uptake of early infant HIV testing at a large health center in Lusaka, Zambia. METHODS: In 2014, 320 HIV-positive married postpartum women were recruited
