BACKGROUND & AIMS: Little is known about long-term health outcomes of children with dyspeptic symptoms. We studied the natural history of pediatric patients with dyspeptic symptoms, with and without histologic reflux, compared with healthy controls.
METHODS: We performed a prospective study of consecutive new patients, ages 8-16 years, who underwent evaluation for dyspepsia, including upper endoscopy. Patients were assigned to groups with histologic evidence of reflux esophagitis (n = 50), or normal histology results (n = 53). Healthy children were followed up as controls (n = 143). Patients

BACKGROUND: In adult patients, autoantibodies targeting the water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4) are a biomarker for a spectrum of CNS inflammatory demyelinating disorders with predilection for optic nerves and spinal cord (neuromyelitis optica [NMO]). Here we describe the neurologic, serologic, and radiographic findings associated with CNS AQP4 autoimmunity in childhood.
METHODS: A total of 88 consecutive seropositive children were identified through service evaluation for NMO-IgG. Sera of 75 were tested for coexisting autoantibodies. Clinical information was available for 58.
RESULTS: Forty-tw

BACKGROUND: The Internet provides new opportunities for parents of children with difficult illnesses and disabilities to find information and support. The Internet is particularly important for caregivers of children with special needs due to numerous health-related decisions they face. For at-risk populations, online support communities can become key settings and channels for health promotion and communication.
OBJECTIVE: This study is an initial exploration of the information-seeking and information-provision processes present in an online support community, which is an area of opportunity

BACKGROUND: Young people with mobility disabilities have limited options to maintain their cardiometabolic health and cardiorespiratory fitness. Active video gaming using extended reality head-mounted displays is becoming increasingly common for promoting serious exergaming. However, there is a need to identify dosing protocols that can potentially lead to meaningful improvements in cardiometabolic health and cardiorespiratory fitness.
OBJECTIVE: This feasibility study aims to explore potential benefits of vigorous-intensity extended reality exergaming, conducted at home with telemonitoring f

BACKGROUND: Most evidence for TSC-associated neuropsychiatric disorders (TAND) to date have come from small studies and case reports, and very little is known about TAND in adults. We explored baseline TAND data from the large-scale international TOSCA natural history study to compare childhood and adult patterns, describe age-based patterns, and explore genotype-TAND correlations.
RESULTS: The study enrolled 2216 eligible participants with TSC from 170 sites across 31 countries at the data cut-off for the third interim analysis (data cut-off date: September 30, 2015). The most common behavio

BACKGROUND: Achieving health equity is a priority of the World Health Organization; however, there is a scant amount of literature on this topic. As the underlying influences that determine health loss caused by risk factors are age-dependent, the aim of this paper is to examine how the risk factor rankings for health loss differ by age.
METHODS: Rankings were based on data obtained from the 2010 Global Burden of Disease study. Health loss (as measured by Disability Adjusted Life Years lost) by risk factor was estimated using Population-Attributable Fractions, years of life lost due to premat

For many autistic individuals, close family members represent a crucial source of support throughout their lifetime. Early autism diagnosis is thought to benefit both autistic individuals and their family members by facilitating early access to services and information. However, little research has empirically studied the relationship between age at diagnosis and well-being among autistic individuals and their family members. In this study, we examined predictors of age at autism diagnosis and its relationship with family well-being using the population-based Norwegian Mother, Father, and Chil

BACKGROUND: The QTA30 is a simple questionnaire used to assess physical and mental health in children. Headache-related disability and impact are commonly evaluated using the Pediatric Migraine Disability Assessment (PedMIDAS) and the Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6). This study examined the relationship between physical and mental health assessed by the QTA30 and headache-related assessments in pediatric patients.
METHOD: This study included patients who visited Hikita Pediatric Clinic from April 2023 to March 2025 and completed the QTA30, PedMIDAS, and HIT-6. Associations between assessment s

Self-report is the gold standard for assessing pain intensity, although the method of acquiring pain reports may influence the ratings obtained. Retrospective reports of pain intensity are often found to be elevated relative to daily diary reports, possibly due to recall bias and the influence of psychosocial factors on memory. In this study, we sought to examine differences between retrospective reporting of average pain intensity in the past week vs averaged daily diary reporting of pain intensity in a sample of adolescents with juvenile fibromyalgia (JFM). We also sought to determine the pr

BACKGROUND: Significant memory impairments are consistently observed in individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID), but considerable variability exists. This study investigated the heterogeneity of declarative memory in children and adolescents with nonspecific mild intellectual disability (NSID) to identify distinct memory profiles and potential predictors of this disability.
METHODS: A latent profile analysis (LPA) was conducted on a large sample (N = 999, including 114 with NSID) using six supplementary memory indices from the Test of Memory and Learning-Second Edition (TOMAL-2). A lo

Cerebral palsy is the most prevalent physical disability in children; however, its inherent molecular mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, we performed in-depth clinical and molecular analysis on 120 idiopathic cerebral palsy families, and identified underlying detrimental genetic variants in 45% of these patients. In addition to germline variants, we found disease-related postzygotic mutations in ∼6.7% of cerebral palsy patients. We found that patients with more severe motor impairments or a comorbidity of intellectual disability had a significantly higher chance of harbouring dis

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is a chronic infectious disease that has created challenging situations for humanity for centuries. Transmission can occur sexually or vertically, with great repercussions on populations, particularly among women and children. The present study presents information on the main burden imposed by syphilis generated by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019 for Brazil and its 27 federated units.
METHODS: We described the metrics of incidence, deaths, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), standardized

BACKGROUND: Infantile-onset multisystem neurologic, endocrine, and pancreatic disease (IMNEPD) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder with variable expressivity, caused by biallelic mutations in the PTRH2 gene. Core features are global developmental delay or isolated speech delay, intellectual disability, sensorineural hearing loss, ataxia, and pancreatic insufficiency (both exocrine and endocrine). Additional features may include postnatal microcephaly, peripheral neuropathy, facial dysmorphism, and cerebellar atrophy. In literature, there are only a few anecdotal case reports and
