BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairments are the most common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). These symptoms have a negative impact on patients' quality of life and daily living activities. This review will focus on published articles that investigated the efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation in PD.
OBJECTIVES: To review the existing literature on the efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation in PD and highlight the most effective form of intervention to prevent cognitive decline. This review will also point out any limitations and provide directions for future research.
METHODS: Publishe

As human life expectancy rises, the aged population will increase. Aging is accompanied by changes in tissue structure, often resulting in functional decline. For example, aging within blood vessels contributes to a decrease in blood flow to important organs, potentially leading to organ atrophy and loss of function. In the central nervous system, cerebral vascular aging can lead to loss of the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, eventually resulting in cognitive and sensorimotor decline. One of the major of types of cognitive dysfunction due to chronic cerebral hypoperfusion is vascular cog

BACKGROUND: Attention deficits are common after acquired brain injury (ABI) and adversely impact academic, vocational and social outcomes. The role of cognitive interventions in post-ABI attention rehabilitation remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effectiveness of cognitive interventions in treating attention deficits following ABI and to explore differences in treatment effect between ABI etiologies.
METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO and CENTRAL databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Studies were selected by three reviewers. Study quality was assessed using Co

BACKGROUND: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a brief screening instrument for dementia that is sensitive to executive dysfunction. This study examined its usefulness for assessing cognitive performance in mild, moderate, and severe Huntington's disease (HD), compared with the use of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).
METHODS: We compared MoCA and MMSE total scores and the number of correct answers in 5 cognitive-specific domains in 104 manifest HD patients and 100 matched controls.
RESULTS: For the total HD sample, and for the moderate and severe patients, significant diffe

Many studies report an association of cognitive and social experiential factors and related traits with dementia risk. Further, many clinical-pathologic studies find a poor correspondence between levels of neuropathology and the presence of dementia and level of cognitive impairment. The poor correspondence suggests that other factors contribute to the maintenance or loss of cognitive function, with factors associated with the maintenance of function referred to as neural or cognitive reserve. This has led investigators to examine the associations of cognitive and social experiential factors w

OBJECTIVES: There is strong epidemiologic evidence to suggest that older adults who maintain an active lifestyle in terms of social, mental, and physical engagement are protected to some degree against the onset of dementia. Such factors are said to contribute to cognitive reserve, which acts to compensate for the accumulation of amyloid and other brain pathologies. We present evidence that lifelong bilingualism is a further factor contributing to cognitive reserve.
METHODS: Data were collected from 211 consecutive patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer disease (AD). Patients' age at onse

A tendency toward abstract and overgeneral processing is a cognitive bias hypothesized to causally contribute to symptoms of depression. This hypothesis predicts that training dysphoric individuals to become more concrete and specific in their thinking would reduce depressive symptoms. To test this prediction, 60 participants with dysphoria were randomly allocated either to (a) concreteness training; (b) bogus concreteness training, matched with concreteness training for treatment rationale, experimenter contact, and treatment duration but without active engagement in concrete thinking; (c) a

The lengthened survival of patients with tumours of the posterior fossa has brought awareness of the neurocognitive deficits present in this patient population. In the past, these deficits were thought to be caused by radiotherapy damaging supratentorial structures known to be responsible for cognitive processing. This notion led to the development of new treatment protocols to restrict damage to supratentorial regions by decreasing the radiation dose and the irradiated volume. However, these treatment protocols have only resulted in marginal improvements, sometimes at the expense of long-term

BACKGROUND: In view of the theoretical rationale for beneficial effects of DHEA and DHEAS on cognitive function in ageing and dementia, we have undertaken a thorough investigation of well-conducted studies in this area. This will provide a basis for confirmation of any effect of DHEA/S administration in humans in properly controlled trials. The review will also provide a scientific basis for effective dosage, acceptable route and duration of administration, and side effect profiles. This review is especially pertinent at this time as DHEA is currently being sold in large quantities in health f

Usefulness of the NEPSY: A Developmental Neuropsychological Assessment (NEPSY) to assess attention/executive function skills was examined in a sample of 30 children with spina bifida and shunted hydrocephalus (SBSH; 20 females/10 males; age range: 6-12 years). Statistically significant moderate-to-strong correlations between the NEPSY and other measures of executive functioning were obtained. The strength of these associations decreased when controlling for intelligence as measured by the WISC-III. The Attention and Executive Function domain appeared more closely associated with tests requirin

Antimuscarinic agents are the predominant pharmacological treatment for patients with overactive bladder (OAB). These drugs are thought to act primarily through antagonism at muscarinic M3 receptors located at neuromuscular junctions in the human bladder detrusor muscle. Several of these drugs have been shown to be efficacious in ameliorating the symptoms of OAB in older patients, but most currently available agents lack selectivity for the M3 receptor subtype, and interaction with other muscarinic receptor subtypes throughout the body may adversely affect a variety of physiological functions

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT; Bechara, Damasio, Damasio, & Anderson, 1994) was investigated in relation to fluid intelligence and two conventional executive function tasks: letter fluency and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. Fifty-one children aged 8-10 years and a heterogeneous group of 40 adults served as participants. Adults outperformed children on all measures except one; this was the number of good cards selected in the IGT. Intercorrelations among executive function tasks were low. The number of good cards in the IGT appeared to be lower than in previous studies. Reasons for poor perform

Increased intracranial pressure and ventricular and subarachnoidal dilatation are common manifestations in achondroplasia. They rarely lead to major neurologic and/or psychomotor deficits and neurosurgical intervention is seldom needed. The present study was undertaken to detect signs of minor cerebral dysfunction and discuss possibilities of their prevention. Thirty children with achondroplasia were compared to 3 control groups: their next-born sibs, 30 children with other forms of dwarfism, and 30 children with normal height. Early development was assessed by means of questionnaires. Cogniti

Transcranial direct and alternating current simulations (tDCS and tACS) are non-invasive neuromodulators with emerging evidence in neuropsychiatric disorders. This review compares their efficacy and tolerability in head-on trials. Following PRISMA guidelines, 955 studies were identified from Scopus, MEDLINE, and trial registries. After screening and reviewing abstracts and full texts by 2 independent authors, 11 studies comparing tACS and tDCS in neuropsychiatric disorders were included. Four studies in schizophrenia, 1 each in depression, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and ataxia; 2 in tinn

Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a rare, sporadic, late-onset progressive neurodegenerative disorder of unknown etiology, clinically characterized by an akinetic-rigid syndrome, behavior and personality disorders, language problems (aphasias), apraxia, executive and cognitive abnormalities and limb dystonia. The syndrome is not specific, as clinical features of pathologically proven CBD include several phenotypes. This 4-repeat (4R) tauopathy is morphologically featured by often asymmetric frontoparietal atrophy, ballooned/achromatic neurons containing filamentous 4R-tau aggregates in cortex

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) is the most common personality disorder across the globe, and has been associated with heightened impulsivity and compulsivity. Examination of whether these findings extend to people with subsyndromal OCPD may shed light on pathogenic mechanisms contributing to the ultimate expression of full personality disorder.
METHODS: Non-treatment seeking participants were recruited in the general community of two US cities, and completed a detailed clinical assessment, along with questionnaires and cognitive tests relating to impulsivity and

Huntington's disease (HD) is a degenerative, neurological disorder that has physical, psychological and cognitive effects. A review of the nursing literature on HD suggests that the main focus has been on explaining and managing the physical and psychological symptoms that arise. Cognitive symptoms appear to be only briefly discussed in most articles, perhaps because they are often the most difficult to explain and understand. This article examines the link between cognition and behaviour in patients with HD and suggests strategies to manage some of these behaviours.

In this report an overview is given of the contribution of cognitive approaches to behavioral medicine. The (possible) contribution of cognitive therapy is reviewed in the area of coronary heart disease, obesity, bulimia nervosa, chronic pain, benign headache, cancer, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome/human immunodeficiency virus and asthma. Although the relative contribution of cognitive therapy varies across these various disorders, its positive effects are now well established and new advances undoubtedly will be made in the next few years.

Approximately 7% of adults develop Post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS). Cognitive impairment is common, but its profile in PCS is not well defined and requires clearer differentiation from general (post-)illness effects. The aim of this study was to identify distinct cognitive profiles in PCS and to characterize them with respect to broader psychological factors such as fatigue, depression, anxiety, and personality. To this end, we assessed cognition, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and personality traits in PCS patients, convalescents (CV), healthy controls (HC), and post-viral syndrome patients (PV)

Recently, an association between cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS), formerly sluggish cognitive tempo, and autism has been documented, but it is not known if the association is due to overlapping autism and CDS traits or if CDS is empirically distinct from autism. Mothers rated 2,209 children 4-17 years (1,177 with autism, 725 with ADHD-Combined type, and 307 with ADHD-Inattentive type) on the Pediatric Behavior Scale. Factor analysis of the Pediatric Behavior Scale items indicated that CDS and autism traits are empirically distinct from each other without cross-loading and are distinct f
