BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Cyclic neutropenia is a rare congenital hematopoietic disease which occurs sporadically or as an autosomal dominantly inherited disorder. Recently, the locus for cyclic neutropenia was mapped to chromosome 19p13.3. Autosomal dominant and sporadic cyclic neutropenia are now attributable to mutations of the ELA2 gene encoding neutrophil elastase.
PATIENTS/METHODS: Based on a case report we review the clinical picture and diagnostic criteria of cyclic neutropenia and report about the recent molecular biological findings and current treatment options.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term therapeutic effects of autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (auto-PBSCT) on the treatment of hematological and solid tumors.
METHODS: Fifty-one patients were recruited in this auto-PBSCT study, in which several potentially important parameters were studied including the optimal time for stem cell collection, the dose of stem cell reinfusion, the time of hematopoietic reconstitution, the disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS), complications related to transplantation, and maintenance chemotherapy after auto-PBSCT.

The feasibility of adding both the multidrug resistance modulator cyclosporin (CsA) and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) to a standard salvage regimen of idarubicin (IDA) and cytarabine was evaluated in patients with resistant or relapsed acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndrome. A prospective evaluation of high-dose ifosfamide (IFO)-related nephrotoxicity in adults and young adults previously treated with cisplatin, methotrexate (MTX) and standard-dose IFO was performed. Eighteen patients (median age 22) with recurrent osteosarcoma were studied: 11 were pretreated with MTX, cisplatin and standard-dose IFO, and seven with MTX and cisplatin. OBJECTIVES: Previous work has shown that synovial fluid isolated from patients with active rheumatoid arthritis contains soluble (not sedimented by centrifugation at 11,600 g for two minutes) and insoluble (sedimented by centrifugation at 11,600 g for two minutes) immunoglobulin aggregates that are capable of activating reactive oxidant production by bloodstream neutrophils. Hydroxyurea, a cell-cycle-specific cytotoxic agent, has been shown to increase fetal hemoglobin (HbF) production. PURPOSE: There is a critical need to find new antineoplastic drugs that are active in platinum-refractory ovarian cancer. We conducted a phase II trial of single-agent ifosfamide with mesna uroprotection in patients with ovarian cancer previously treated with an organoplatinum compound to assess its activity in this clinical setting.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ifosfamide (1.0 or 1.2 g/m2/d for 5 days, delivered on a monthly schedule) was administered to the 57 patients entered onto this trial. Dose reductions were permitted for unacceptable toxicities.
