Deafferentation-disconnection neglect induced by posterior cerebral artery infarction.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate patients with posterior cerebral artery (PCA) infarctions to learn whether hemispatial neglect is more frequent an … es not cause hemispatial neglect; and the injury to both the occipital lobe and the splenium of the corpus callosum is important for producing hemispatial neglect with PCA infarction.

Neuropathological analysis of an asymptomatic adult case with Dandy-Walker variant.

The Dandy-Walker (DW) complex is a rare posterior fossa malformation, usually observed during the prenatal period or the early infancy. Clinically, it is characterized by mental retardation, seizures, cerebellar ataxia as well as symptoms of hydrocephalus. Structural imaging reveal a hypoplasia or agenesis of the cerebellar vermis, enlargement of the fourth ventricle with a posterior fossa cyst. Additional neurodevelopmental changes such as agenesis of the corpus callosum, lissencephaly and cortical dysplasia are also present. We report the first neuropathological analysis of an adult asymptom…

The associated findings on imaging were hydrocephalus (15%), corpus callosum agenesis (7%), arachnoid cyst (3%), porencephalic cyst (3%) and single ventricle (3%). A classical Tessier's operation was performed in the initial 30 cases. However, since 1988, we have been performing a single stage hemiorbital advancement and rep …

Orofaciodigital syndrome with cerebral dysgenesis.

Orofaciodigital syndromes (OFD) are a group of diseases classified according to the phenotype and the mode of inheritance. We report on a fetus presenting with some features of the OFDs but with additional global cerebral dysgenesis. Ultrasonography at 19 weeks of pregnancy disclosed hypoplasia of the cerebral hemispheres with a large intrahemispheric cyst, as well as dysmorphic facial features and brachy-syndactyly IV-V. Fetal brain MRI confirmed these features and disclosed additional morphological anomalies: Agenesis of the vermis, complete agenesis of the corpus callosum, pachygyria of the…

Myelin deterioration in Twitcher mice: motor evoked potentials and magnetic resonance imaging as in vivo monitoring tools.

We have used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and motor evoked potentials (MEPs) for monitoring disease progression within the CNS of the Tw … l days 20 and 45. Healthy controls showed a gradual-appearance MRI T2-weighted hypointensity of the corpus callosum (CC) starting at about P30 and ending at about P37, whereas MRI of age-matched Twitcher mice showed a complete loss of the CC-related MRI signal. MEPs allowed the functional assessment of myelin maturation within corticospinal motor pathways and sho …

There was minimal EB labeling in uninjured control brains, limited to cells lining the luminal surfaces of the ventricles. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: an overview with emphasis on changes in brain and behavior.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders constitute a major public health problem. This article presents an overview of important issues that surrou … overall brain size and shape, specifically in structures such as the cerebellum, basal ganglia, and corpus callosum. A wide range of neuropsychological deficits have been found in children prenatally exposed to alcohol, including deficits in visuospatial functioning, verbal and nonverbal learning, attention, and executive functioning. These children also exhibit …

Effects of neonatal C-fiber depletion on neocortical long-term potentiation and depression.

Capsaicin (Cap)-induced depletion of C-fiber afferents results in plasticity of somatosensory system which is manifested as a functional alteration at different levels of the somatosensory pathway. In the present study we examined the effect of Cap-induced neonatal depletion of C-fibers on the induction of long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) in the neocortex of freely moving rats. A stimulating electrode was implanted into corpus callosum and a recording electrode was implanted in the somatosensory cortex of control (Con: normal, without electrical stimulation), trained…

AMPA receptor blockade potentiates the stimulatory effect of L-DOPA on dopamine release in dopamine-deficient corticostriatal slice preparation.

The release of [3H]dopamine was measured in rat corticostriatal slice preparations that contained the striatum and the adjacent prefrontal cortex to maintained glutamatergic corticostriatal afferentation. These slices were prepared from either nontreated or 6-hydroxydopamine-pretreated rats. The slices were loaded with [3H]dopamine, submerged in a two-compartment bath so that the cortical region was contained in one compartment, the corpus callosum was passed through a silicone greased slot, and the striatal region was contained in the other compartment. The cortical and the striatal parts wer…

Hydrocephalus following prenatal exposure to ethanol.

Pregnant rats were administered a liquid diet containing 5% (w/v) ethanol between gestational days 10 and 21, and the brains of nine offspring were examined at 8 weeks of age. Two ethanol-treated offspring showed obvious hydrocephalus characterized by markedly enlarged lateral ventricles. Most of the other ethanol-treated rats only showed a slight enlargement of the lateral ventricles. An ethanol-treated offspring showed no neuropathological signs of hydrocephalus. Histological observation of the hydrocephalic brains revealed dilation of the lateral ventricles, loosely bundled corpus callosum,…

In each malformation, normal midline topology began with a small posterior corpus callosum. Although the topologic anomaly in the present series invariably also involved the TT segment, this involvement was not continuous and was variably associated with anomalies of the DD in 6 and unilaterally of the DT in 1 brain. Transplantation of neural stem cells modulates apolipoprotein E expression in a rat model of stroke.

The expression of apolipoprotein E (apoE) after ischemic brain damage has been associated with plasticity involved in promoting functional r … ed cognitive dysfunction, with transplanted cells being widely distributed in cortex, striatum, and corpus callosum on both sides of the brain in all grafted groups. Thus, stem cells grafted in the parenchyma are not only capable of limited expression of apoE in the host brain but also trigger a robust increase on the side contralateral to stroke damage where thi …
