Effect of testosterone deficiency on cholesterol metabolism in pigs fed a high-fat and high-cholesterol diet.

BACKGROUND: Testosterone deficiency is associated with increased serum cholesterol levels. However, how testosterone deficiency precisely affects cholesterol metabolism remains unclear. Therefore, in the current study, we examined the effect of testosterone deficiency on cholesterol metabolism and liver gene expression in pigs fed a high-fat and high-cholesterol (HFC) diet. METHODS: Sexually mature male miniature pigs (6-7 months old) were randomly divided into 3 groups as follows: intact male pigs fed an HFC diet (IM+HFC), castrated male pigs fed an HFC diet (CM+HFC), and castrated pigs with

Sex-specific metabolic responses to glucagon receptor agonism and modulation of the FGF21-glucagon axis in female mice.

Glucagon receptor agonism, particularly when combined with incretin analogues, is currently being explored as a treatment for obesity to improve cardiometabolic health, given glucagon's key role in regulating energy homoeostasis. However, male-biased preclinical studies limit our understanding of sex-specific responses to glucagon receptor activation, especially regarding fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a major downstream effector of glucagon signalling. To test whether responses to glucagon receptor agonism are sex dependent and modulated by FGF21, we compared a long-acting glucagon anal

Protective Effects and Potential Mechanisms of Dietary Resveratrol Supplementation on the Spleen of Broilers Under Heat Stress.

Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural polyphenolic compound with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of RSV supplementation on the inflammatory responses of broilers during heat stress. A total of 432 28-d-old white-feathered broilers (817 crossbred chicken) with an average weight of 549 ± 4 g were randomly allotted to 4 equal groups (Half male and half female, 6 replicates/group, 18 chickens/replicate), including normal temperature (NT) group (24 ± 2°C for 24 h/d, basal diet), NT+RSV group (24 ± 2°C for 24 h/d, basal diet + RSV)

Use of encapsulated L-lysine-HCl and DL-methionine improves postprandial amino acid balance in laying hens.

The supplementation of dietary limiting amino acids (AA) with crystalline AA makes the use of low-protein diets an option in poultry production. The differing absorption rates of crystalline and protein-bound AA may lead to temporally imbalanced AA in the postabsorptive period. In this study, two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of encapsulated L-lysine-HCl (L-Lys-HCl) and DL-methionine (DL-Met) on the laying performance of hens. In exp. 1, a total of 135 forty-seven-wk-old Hy-Line Brown hens were subjected to three dietary treatments for 8 wk: basal diet supplemented with 0.1

Dietary flaxseed meal reduces proteinuria and ameliorates nephropathy in an animal model of type II diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Evidence is emerging that varying the type or source of dietary protein intake can have beneficial effects on chronic renal disease. Consumption of soybean and soy-based food products, as the source of plant protein, can retard the development and progression of chronic renal disease. We studied the obese spontaneously hypertensive/NIH-corpulent (SHR/N-cp) rat, a model of obesity and type II diabetes mellitus that consistently develops nephropathy resembling diabetic nephropathy. We specifically sought to determine whether changing the source of protein intake from animal protein,

Low-FODMAP Diet for Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Endometriosis: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, altered stool pattern, dyschezia, and nausea, are frequent in women with endometriosis and may persist despite conventional gynecological treatment. The low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (low-FODMAP) diet is an established dietary intervention for irritable bowel syndrome. Its endometriosis-specific evidence base remains limited. This systematic review evaluated clinical evidence on the low-FODMAP diet or structured FODMAP restriction for GI symptoms in women w

The impact of canola meal and canola seed inclusions in broiler diets.

A total of 450 day-old straight-run Ross 308 broiler chickens were offered nine dietary regimes where canola products primarily replaced soybean meal at varying levels in iso-energetic diets with balanced amino acid profiles. Each of the nine dietary treatments was offered to ten replicate cages, with five birds per cage from 1 to 42 days post-hatch. During the starter period (1-10 d), there was no significant dietary impact on feed intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P > 0.05) and transition of canola product inclusion from 0 to 50 g/kg did not influence weight gain but transition from 50

A high-concentrate diet induces inflammatory injury via regulating Ca2+/CaMKKβ-mediated autophagy in mammary gland tissue of dairy cows.

INTRODUCTION: Calmodulin-dependent protein kinase β (CaMKKβ) is closely related to Ca2+ concentration. An increase in Ca2+ concentration in the cytoplasm activates CaMKKβ, and activated CaMKKβ affects the activities of AMPK and mTOR and induces autophagy. A high-concentrate diet leads to Ca2+ disorder in mammary gland tissue. OBJECTIVES: Therefore, this study mainly investigated the induction of mammary gland tissue autophagy by a high-concentrate diet and the specific mechanism of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced autophagy in bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs). Effect of withdrawing an immunomodulatory feed additive from lactating cow diets on peripheral blood mononuclear cell proliferation.

Supplementation of immunomodulatory feed additives, such as OmniGen AF (OG), helps to maintain immune competency; however, it is unknown if immune benefits persist in lactating cows after OG is removed from the diet. The aim of this trial was to evaluate the effect of withdrawing OG from the diet on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) proliferation of midlactation dairy cows. Multiparous Holstein cows (N = 32), blocked by parity (2.7 ± 0.8) and days in milk (153 ± 39 d) were randomly assigned to one of the two dietary treatments within each block: diets were top dressed with either OG (5

Decreased EDHF-mediated relaxation is a major mechanism in endothelial dysfunction in resistance arteries in aged mice on prolonged high-fat sucrose diet.

High-fat sucrose (HFS) diet in aged individuals causes severe weight gain (obesity) with much higher risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension or atherosclerosis. Endothelial dysfunction is a major contributor for these vascular disorders. We hypothesize that prolonged ingestion of HFS diet by aged mice would accentuate endothelial dysfunction in the small resistance arteries. Male C57BL/6J mice at 12 weeks of age were divided into four groups and fed either normal chow (NC) or high-fat sucrose diet (HFS). Young group received NC for 4 months, and high-fat diet (HFD) for 3 months an

Effects of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibition in vivo: Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor/gut microbiome crosstalk suggests novel therapeutic options for diabetes management.

Wang et al. report that clinical dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors show little effect on microbial DPP-4 produced by Bacteroides genus. Furthermore, oral administration of microbial DPP-4 to high-fat diet-fed mice was found to reduce plasma active glucagon-like peptide-1 levels through an increase in extraluminal intestinal tissular DPP-4 activity, resulting in reduced glucose-induced insulin levels and exacerbated glucose tolerance.

The role of parathyroids for the adaptation to a low calcium intake.

One-year-old selectively parathyroidectomized rats were found to have lost the ability to adapt themselves to a reduced calcium intake. Of importance in this respect was certainly the demonstrated inability to mobilize skeletal calcium to the blood. Thus, when the normal intake of calcium in the diet is reduced in the adult intact rat, skeletal calcium reserves must become mobilized with resulting osteoporosis. Histological and morphometric analyses of the adrenal glands showed no apparent effect of the parathyroidectomy upon the functional state of the adrenal cortex.

Potential Biodiversity Footprint Reductions from Intended Shifts to Plant-Based Meals.

Adopting plant-based diets can mitigate biodiversity loss by reducing the demand for land required for feed and livestock. Yet, most assessments rely on hypothetical dietary scenarios that potentially overestimate biodiversity gains. We conducted a large-scale consumer survey across three countries (NLD, GBR, and USA) and estimated the biodiversity footprints of current and intended future diets using the loss of mean species abundance (MSA-loss) and the loss of global species richness (RSR-loss) as indicators. Over half of the respondents expressed no intention to reduce meat or dairy consump

Lifestyle factors and cardiometabolic risk.

Cardiometabolic risk encompasses the interconnected conditions of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), type 2 diabetes (T2D), and other metabolic diseases, which are leading global health challenges. The American Heart Association (AHA) has introduced "Life's Essential 8" (LE8), a framework emphasizing eight key lifestyle and health factors, including diet, physical activity, smoking, sleep health, body weight, blood glucose, blood lipids, and blood pressure to optimize cardiovascular health and reduce the burden of cardiometabolic risk. This review examined the associations between individual and

A Review of the Effects of Lifestyle Factors on Skin Aging.

Skin aging reflects both intrinsic biological processes and cumulative lifestyle behaviors. While lifestyle medicine pillars are well established in cardiometabolic disease prevention, their relevance to dermatologic aging is increasingly supported by evidence. This narrative review synthesized human observational studies, randomized trials, and preclinical models examining the effects of nutrition, physical activity, psychological stress, sleep, substance use, and social connection on skin aging. Outcomes included visible aging phenotypes, barrier function, dermal structure, inflammatory sign
