The snake venom protein echistatin contains the cell recognition sequence Arg-Gly-Asp and is a potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation. The three-dimensional structure of echistatin and the dynamics of the active RGD site are presented. A set of structures was determined using the Distance Geometry method and subsequently refined by Molecular Dynamics and energy minimization. OBJECTIVE: Bucillamine: N-(2-mercapto-2-methyl-propanoyl)-L-cysteine has recently been suggested to be effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The molecular structure of this compound is similar to that of D-penicillamine, except that bucillamine has 2 free sulfhydryl groups in its structure whereas D-penicillamine has only one. The goal of our studies was to determine whether bucillamine exerted immunosuppressive effects in vitro.
METHODS: The effect of bucillamine and its metabolites on mitogen induced proliferation and IL-2 production by human T cells was examined.

Complementary DNA clones coding for the human secreted carbonic anhydrase isozyme (CA VI) have been isolated and their nucleotide sequences determined. These clones identify a 1.45-kb mRNA that is present in high levels in parotid submandibular salivary glands but absent in other tissues such as the sublingual gland, kidney, liver, and prostate gland. We characterized Fc receptor III (FcR III) on human neutrophils and found it to be heavily glycosylated and polymorphic. In some individuals, FcR III that had been digested with N-glycanase appeared after SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions as two bands with apparent molecular masses of 33 and 29 kD. In other individuals, N-glycanase-treated FcR III appeared as a single band with an Mr of either 33 or 29 kD. After SDS-PAGE of N-glycanase-treated FcR III under nonreducing conditions, the apparent Mr of each structural type was decreased, suggesting the presence of intramolecular disulfide bonds.

A sampling and analytical method for the measurement of ethylene oxide (EtO) short-term exposure limits (STEL) was validated under both laboratory and field conditions.
