Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) foams were used as scaffolds in hollow fiber membrane-based cell encapsulation devices. The surrounding permselective membrane serves as an immunoisolation barrier while allowing metabolites and other small molecules to be freely transported. Neuroimaging evidence supporting an association between either dopamine or serotonin and time to relapse of heroin users is limited. In this two-isotope SPECT small sample (N=9) pilot study, the relationship between the availability of serotonin transporter (SERT) and dopamine transporter (DAT) and the relapse of heroin users was investigated. A significant negative association between SERT availability and time to relapse among those who relapsed (N=7) was found.

We report an adult patient lacking endogenous synthesis of monoamines (dopamine, serotonin, and catecholamines) due to a severe dihydropteridine reductase (DHPR) deficiency. With levodopa and 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP) supplementation, the patient exhibited moderate mental retardation, acute episodes of parkinsonism, and episodes of depression. Despite the use of levodopa from age 3 months, he exhibited no dyskinesia or dopaminergic cell loss as suggested by normal PET imaging of the dopamine transporter.

Dopamine agonists are generally well tolerated and represent the first-line therapy for prolactinomas. We report a case of a 20-year-old man with a macroprolactinoma who developed recurrent priapism with cabergoline and bromocriptine. Transsphenoidal pituitary adenoma resection was done with normalization of the prolactin level. Priapism is a rare side effect of dopamine agonists that warrants discontinuation of therapy. Patients should be educated about this potential side effect at the time of prescribing the medication.

The etiology and pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome (TS) have not yet been clarified. Despite inconsistencies in the literature, some conclusions can be drawn on genetics, neuroanatomy and neurotransmitters. The inheritance of TS is unknown; the etiology seems to be polygenic. The basal ganglia are probably smaller in patients with TS. A dysfunction in the dopaminergic pathway causes tics. ADHD results from a decreased concentration of dopamine and an increased concentration of noradrenaline. OCD is caused by a dysfunction in serotonin and probably dopamine.

A child with dihydropteridine reductase (DHPR) deficiency developed signs of dopamine insufficiency after being given trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX). She recovered function after the antibiotic was stopped, which suggests that it adversely influenced dopamine metabolism in the CNS. The authors speculate that TMP, a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor, was the major cause of the patient's deterioration, and suggest that it and other dihydrofolate inhibitors, notably methotrexate, are contra-indicated for patients with DHPR deficiency.

The effects of adrenaline, noradrenaline, isoprenaline and dopamine were studied on the longitudinal muscle of the ascending and descending colon of the rhesus monkey. All these drugs induced a relaxation of the preparation, dopamine being the less active agonist. The responses seem to be the result of beta 2-adrenoceptor stimulation since their inhibition by practolol (beta 1) is weaker than their inhibition by propranolol (beta 1 and beta 2 dopaminergic). There is no evidence for the presence of dopaminergic receptors in this preparation.
