Measuring Structural Racism and Its Association with Racial Disparities in Firearm Homicide.

INTRODUCTION: Structural racism is strongly related to racial health disparities. However, surprisingly few studies have developed empirical tools to measure structural racism. In addition, the few measures that have been employed have only considered structural racism at the neighborhood level. To expand upon previous studies, this paper uses a novel measure to measure structural racism at the county level for the non-Hispanic Black population. METHODS: We used confirmatory factor analysis to create a model to measure the latent construct of structural racism for 1181 US counties. The model

Environmental and social determinants of acute rheumatic fever: a longitudinal cohort study.

Acute rheumatic fever (ARF), an auto-immune response to a group A Streptococcus infection and precursor to rheumatic heart disease (RHD), remains endemic in many socio-economically disadvantaged settings. A Global Resolution on ARF and RHD was recently adopted at the 71st World Health Assembly where governments committed to improving efforts to prevent and control ARF and RHD. To inform these efforts, the objectives of this study were to examine associations between childhood ARF in the UK between 1958 and 1969 and a range of environmental and social factors. Of 17 416 children from the nation

Increased HIV infection in patients with stroke in Spain. A 16-year population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: An increased incidence of stroke in HIV-infected patients has already been reported, suggesting that HIV infection may be a cerebrovascular risk factor. The objective of this study was to assess temporal trends in the proportion of HIV infection among patients with stroke in Spain. METHODS: Data were obtained from the minimum basic dataset (MBDS) of all patients hospitalized in Spain between 1997 and 2012 with a primary or secondary diagnosis of stroke. The annual proportion of HIV infection and time trends (stratifying by type of stroke and HIV stage) were calculated, and predi

Three kinds of psychological determinants for hand-washing behaviour in Kenya.

Washing hands with soap at the right times - primarily after contact with faeces, but also before handling food or feeding an infant - can significantly reduce the incidence of childhood infectious disease. Here, we present empirical results which substantiate a recent claim that washing hands can be the consequence of different kinds of psychological causes. Such causes can be divided into three kinds of control over behaviour: automatic or habitual responses, motivated or goal-driven behaviour to satisfy needs, and cognitive causes which reflect conscious concerns. Empirical results are base

Ineffective health maintenance behaviors in people with chronic conditions: Systematic review of etiology and risk.

BACKGROUND: Ineffective health maintenance behaviors (00292) is an important nursing diagnosis in the context of chronic conditions. However, it is observed that the etiology of this phenomenon is not well defined for this population. For nurses to infer this diagnosis early and, consequently, develop effective care plans, further studies are needed to facilitate the understanding of the factors related to the phenomenon. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the factors related to the ineffective health maintenance behaviors nursing diagnosis in people with chronic conditions. METHODS: A systematic review

Relative importance of management, meteorological and environmental factors in the spatial distribution of Fasciola hepatica in dairy cattle in a temperate climate zone.

Fasciola hepatica, a trematode parasite with a worldwide distribution, is the cause of important production losses in the dairy industry. Diagnosis is hampered by the fact that the infection is mostly subclinical. To increase awareness and develop regionally adapted control methods, knowledge on the spatial distribution of economically important infection levels is needed. Previous studies modelling the spatial distribution of F. hepatica are mostly based on single cross-sectional samplings and have focussed on climatic and environmental factors, often ignoring management factors. This study i

An explainable geospatial framework for fine-scale Fatty Liver Disease (FLD) risk assessment: roles of social economy, built environment, and psychology.

BACKGROUND: Fatty Liver Disease (FLD) has become the most common chronic liver disease worldwide, posing a great threat to public health. The existing methods are primarily based on clinical patient cohorts, supplemented by urban environmental factors, to elucidate biological mechanisms. However, insufficient geographic information and spatial resolution limit the public risk identification. This study integrates real and virtual multi-source data and proposes an explainable geospatial framework for street-level HS risk assessment. METHODS: Firstly, based on prior medical knowledge, we constr

Exploring the Forms and Risk Factors of Domestic Violence from Afghan Immigrant Women's Point of View in Finland.

Migration, particularly forced migration, often heightens vulnerability to domestic violence (DV) due to a complex interplay of cultural, structural, and migration-related stressors. While Finland is recognized for its high standards of gender equality, it also reports high rates of domestic violence against women (DVAW), with a gap in research focusing specifically on the perceptions of Afghan immigrant women. To address this gap, this qualitative study investigates how Afghan immigrant women in Finland conceptualize DV and identify its underlying drivers. Utilizing a transnational intersecti

Etiology and risk factors of hemorrhagic abomasitis in goat kids.

Hemorrhagic abomasitis, also known as Salivary Abomasum Disease (SAD), is a largely under-researched condition affecting young lambs and kids, often leading to high mortality rates and significant economic losses. The disease's etiopathogenesis, risk factors, and clinical features remain poorly understood. Existing studies have been limited and fragmented, leading to misdiagnoses and confusion about its true nature. Given the lack of a comprehensive investigation into SAD's incidence, risk factors, and causative agents, this study aims to provide a thorough analysis through clinical, necropsy,

Prevalence and determinants of apparent treatment-resistant hypertension among patients in South African primary care: a single-centre observational study.

INTRODUCTION: The surge in cardiovascular disease across Sub-Saharan Africa is largely driven by hypertension along with other cardiometabolic risk factors. South Africa, like other low-middle-income countries, faces a disproportionate burden due to the increasing prevalence of hypertension, exacerbated by low awareness, treatment, and control rates. Treatment-resistant hypertension (TRH) is a complex clinical entity and poses significant obstacles to achieving therapeutic goals. The prevalence of TRH in South Africa and its associated factors remain underexplored despite its significant cardi
