Dapagliflozin: A sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, attenuates angiotensin II-induced atrial fibrillation by regulating atrial electrical and structural remodeling.

AIM: Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common arrhythmia, is characterized by atrial electrical and structural remodeling. Previous studies have found that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) can protect myocardium in a glucose independent mechanism. But the role of SGLT2i in regulating AF remains largely unknown. This study, we aimed to investigate the effect of Dapagliflozin (DAPA) in reducing AF susceptibility via inhibiting electrical and structural remodeling. METHOD: The mouse model was established by Angiotensin II (2000 ng/kg/min) infusion for 3 weeks, and an in vitro m

Autonomic and somatic responses evoked by stimulation of the cerebellar uvula in the conscious rabbit.

The present study has investigated the effects of electrical stimulation of the cerebellar posterior cortex in the conscious rabbit. Stimulation of lobule IX (the uvula) elicited an increase in mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate, accompanied by EEG desynchronization, pupillary dilatation and a specific motor reaction, consisting of pricking of the ears, neck stiffening and running movements. Stimulation of lobule VIII was ineffective in evoking equivalent responses. The administration of barbiturates reversed the cardiovascular response to uvula stimulation, producing a fall in mean a

Periaqueductal grey stimulation: an association between selective inhibition of dorsal horn neurones and changes in peripheral circulation.

In barbiturate-anaesthetized and paralysed cats, dorsal horn neurones were studied during electrical stimulation of the periaqueductal grey matter (PAG) and the midbrain ventral tegmentum (VT). Responses to impulses in unmyelinated primary afferents were selectively inhibited by stimulation in the PAG, whereas stimulation in the VT non-selectively reduced both these responses and those to innocuous cutaneous stimuli. Stimulation in the PAG but not the VT produced changes in peripheral circulation. This was observed as a rise in the levels of carbon dioxide in expired air, a rise in muscle temp

Patterns of Care Following Procedural Intervention Among Women With Overactive Bladder.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Procedural therapies for overactive bladder (OAB) most often include intradetrusor onabotulinumtoxinA (BTX) injections, sacral neuromodulation (SNM), and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS). Despite their proven efficacy, real-world data on therapy continuation and crossover rates between these modalities remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate longitudinal patterns of treatment continuation and therapy crossover among women receiving procedural OAB treatments. METHODS: We conducted a multi-institutional retrospective cohort study of women with idiopa

Peripheral nerve stimulation for saphenous neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Injury to saphenous nerve branches is frequent during knee surgery and can result in chronic pain. This saphenous neuralgia remains challenging to treat. Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) is a new potential non-pharmacologic treatment option. We present our outcomes experience using this technology in 12 patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed PNS placement for saphenous neuralgia between 2000 and 2022 at a single institution. Demographic information was collected as well as response to the device. Four-question short-form Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Information S

Sacral nerve stimulation versus percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation in the treatment of severe fecal incontinence in men.

BACKGROUND: Sacral nerve stimulation and percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation have been described previously as effective treatments for fecal incontinence. Nevertheless, there does not exist any study that compares the efficiency of both. The aim of this study was to compare the use of SNS and PPTNS in males with FI. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study on men with FI treated with SNS or PTNS in the Coloproctology Unit of the University General Hospital of Elche and Reina Sofia of Murcia between January 2010 and December 2011. Preoperative assessment included physical

[Conservative therapy and minimal invasive surgery for treating faecal incontinence].

Faecal incontinence should primarily be managed in a conservative way, and if this is not sufficient different options for minimally invasive surgery should be considered. Dietary regimens, fibers, constipating agents, enemas, biofeedback and colonic irrigation may be tried as first-line therapy. Posterior tibial nerve stimulation and injections of bulging agents can be offered, but the evidence is still not convincing. Sacral nerve stimulation is a well documented treatment for faecal incontinence. Magnetic anal sphincter implantation should be considered only in highly selected patients.

On light-induced sneezing.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether the tickling inside the nose before a light-induced sneeze in susceptible individuals is correlated to a recordable local activity or not. METHODS: Seven healthy volunteers, three with a history of light-induced sneezing, were stimulated with stroboscopic light or a strong halogen lamp. Recording was done with an evoked potential averaging technique via intranasal electrodes placed in such a way that they substantially reduced the strong electrical response from the retina. RESULTS: Despite an adequate light stimulus, no reproducible electrical activity could

Females have shorter scalp-to-cortex distances and receive stronger TMS electrical fields: Implications for clinical treatment.

The strength of a given transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) pulse decays rapidly with distance. Male and female bone structure reliably differs by the shape of the frontal bone, mandible, and inion. Given the morphology of these structures constitutes much of the scalp-to-cortex distance (STCD), we hypothesized that females have shorter STCDs and thereby receive stronger TMS electrical field strengths, relative to males. Head models (n = 411; 197 female, 214 male) were constructed from MRIs of healthy participants (ages 18-90). STCD and peak electrical field strength were measured at 50 EE
