Arbovirus infections in man in British Columbia.

During the summer of 1971, the first laboratory-proved cases of acute encephalitis in man due to any of the known arboviruses occurred in the south-central region of British Columbia. Five human cases of encephalitis with two deaths were diagnosed; three of these patients, including one of the fatalities, were proven in the laboratory to have contracted western equine encephalitis.During 1968 and 1969, a human serum survey undertaken in approximately 2000 life-long residents of the province discovered low levels of hemagglutinin-inhibiting and/or complement-fixing as well as neutralizing antib

Brain and neural cell type proteomics reveal extracellular matrix proteins enriched in progressive multiple sclerosis.

Progressive multiple sclerosis (PMS) is an autoimmune demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) in humans. PMS is defined by neuroinflammation and axonal damage with advancing neurological disabilities, although the underlying molecular mechanisms remain uncertain. To gain insight into the proteomic aspects of PMS, we used mass spectrometry to investigate proteomic profiles and specific protein changes in matched CNS tissues (white matter, cortex, and lesions) from persons with PMS and age/sex-matched other disease controls (ODCs). These studies were examined further using prot

Elevation of AQP4 and selective cytokines in experimental autoimmune encephalitis mice provides some potential biomarkers in optic neuritis and demyelinating diseases.

Idiopathic optic neuritis (ION) is an inflammation of the optic nerve that may result in a complete or partial loss of vision. ION is usually due to the immune attack of the myelin sheath covering the optic nerve. ION acts frequently as the first symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO), or other inflammatory demyelinating disorders. The pathogenic progression of ION remains unclear. Experimental autoimmune encephalitis (EAE) is a commonly used model of idiopathic inflammatory demyelinating disorders (IIDDs); the optic nerve is affected in EAE as well. The specific me

Structure of the recombinant alphavirus Western equine encephalitis virus revealed by cryoelectron microscopy.

Western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV; Togaviridae, Alphavirus) is an enveloped RNA virus that is typically transmitted to vertebrate hosts by infected mosquitoes. WEEV is an important cause of viral encephalitis in humans and horses in the Americas, and infection results in a range of disease, from mild flu-like illnesses to encephalitis, coma, and death. In addition to spreading via mosquito vectors, human WEEV infections can potentially occur directly via aerosol transmission. Due to its aerosol infectivity and virulence, WEEV is thus classified as a biological safety level 3 (BSL-3) agen

Neurobrucellosis: clinical and neuroimaging correlation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Manifestation of nervous system involvement by neurobrucellosis, a treatable infection, is not well documented. We investigated patterns of nervous system involvement and determined if neuroimaging abnormalities correlated with clinical manifestations of neurobrucellosis. METHODS: We reviewed 23 MR imaging studies (17 of brain, six of spine) and seven CT scans of brain in 23 patients (14 male and nine female patients; age range 17-71 years) with positive Brucella titers in their serum and CSF. RESULTS: Twelve patients had central nervous system (CNS) involvement, four

Disorders that mimic CNS infections.

A variety of inflammatory and neoplastic disorders can cause signs, symptoms, and laboratory abnormalities suggesting CNS infection. The distinction usually can be made through careful consideration of the entire clinical picture and the judicious use of additional laboratory tests.

EVs exhibit high genetic variability, and viral evolution has been associated with changes in neurovirulence. Notably, EV-D68 epidemics in 2014, 2016, and 2018 coincided with spikes in AFM cases. However, AFM reports fro …
