Engineering Proton Injection and Phase Separation in Phosphate Glass For Low-Barrier Transport in All-Solid-State Electrochromic Devices.

When compared to electrochromic devices (ECDs) that use other forms of ion transport, those that use small-sized protons as transport Ions have faster response rates. However, integrating high-concentration protons into robust all-inorganic solid-state ECDs is difficult. This work employed solid-state electrochemical techniques to replace sodium ions in phosphate glass with hydrogen ions, obtaining a proton conductor with a high proton concentration. Furthermore, under controlled heating conditions, a conductive reinforcing phase with low proton activation energy was induced to precipitate wit

Interfacial engineering of hollow reduced graphene oxide-molybdenum disulfide nanosphere for surface-regulated targeted drug release and photothermal conversion.

One promising approach to enhance cancer treatment is the development of multifunctional nanoplatforms that combine external stimuli-responsive therapy with targeted drug delivery. In this work, we present a hybrid hollow sphere nanostructure designed for targeted chemo-photothermal therapy that is composed of reduced graphene oxide‑molybdenum disulfide (rGO-MoS2 HSs) functionalized with folic acid (rGO-MoS2-PEG-FA). The rGO-MoS2 HSs exhibit strong near-infrared (NIR) absorption and effective photothermal conversion, and PEGylation ensures superior biocompatibility and colloidal stability. Fol

Functional shell engineering of bioactive wheat-seedling nanovesicles with chitosan derivatives for synergistic metabolic therapy via enhanced oral delivery.

Plant-derived exosome-like vesicles (PDEVs) have emerged as promising oral delivery carriers, yet their application is severely limited by gastrointestinal instability and poor intestinal absorption. To overcome these barriers, we developed a biohybrid nanoplatform by sequentially coating wheat-seedling PDEVs with trimethyl chitosan (TMC) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) via layer-by-layer self-assembly. This engineering strategy confers enhanced physicochemical stability, effectively protecting the payload against gastric degradation while enabling targeted intestinal release. Mechanistically…

A Comprehensive Review on Engineering Release at the Molecular Level: Role of Functional Groups in Polysaccharide-Based Drug Delivery.

Stimuli-responsive drug-delivery systems (SRDDS) have transformed precision medicine by enabling spatiotemporal control over therapeutic release, significantly reducing off-target toxicity while enhancing efficacy at the disease site. Naturally occurring polysaccharides, such as hyaluronic acid, chitosan, alginate, and dextran stand out as premier scaffolds for these "smart" nanoplatforms due to their inherent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and abundance of reactive sites for molecular engineering. This review explores the versatility of polysaccharide functionalization, detailing how the…

Interfacial Engineering of Clay-Based Nanohybrids with pH-Responsive Network-like Behavior for Hair Photoprotection and Algal Growth Promotion.

The interfacial behavior of hybrid nanoparticles on biological substrates governs their functional performance. Here, we investigate how surface properties and colloidal stability dictate the pH-dependent adhesion of oxybenzone-loaded palygorskite nanohybrids to hair-a model biological interface. A series of hybrids with 5-50% oxybenzone loadings were prepared via melt impregnation. XRD and FTIR analyses confirm hydrogen bonding between oxybenzone and palygorskite, forming stable organic-inorganic hybrids. The colloidal stability of these nanohybrids varies non-monotonically with oxybenzone lo

Engineering of Lewis Acid Sites in Mesoporous Zeolite Achieves Record Fructose Yield of 71.5% for Glucose Isomerization in Ethanol.

Lewis acid catalyzed glucose isomerization is a vital step in biorefinery, but it's restricted by the limited catalytic toolkit and reaction equilibrium. Herein, we report that engineering Lewis acid sites in a mesoporous zeolite can greatly boost productivity. Incorporating a few of Sn species into KIT-6 zeolite with the assistance of phosphorylation delivered SnPO/KIT(x) materials with abundant Lewis acid sites and a few of Brønsted acid sites, while conserving the ordered mesoporous structure. Moreover, the Lewis acidic Sn sites have a coordination environment distinct from those in traditi…

Optimizing eco-engineering pedogenesis of bauxite residues: Synergistic effects of humus and FeSO4/sulfur on microbial community and function.

Eco-engineered pedogenesis represents a promising approach for soil amelioration of bauxite residues (BRs) through exogenous organic matter. However, the role of humus in mediating this process remains poorly understood, significantly impeding the eco-engineering rehabilitation of BRs. In this study, we conducted pot experiments and subsequent microbial analysis to evaluate the individual improvement of humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA), and corn straw (SWZ) on the BRs' pedogenesis. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that both FA and SWZ were more effective than HA in steering microb…

Molecular Engineering of Curcumin-Based Lysosome-Targeting Photosensitizers for Boosting Tumor Photoimmunotherapy via Ferroptosis/Pyroptosis Activation and Autophagy Inhibition.

Developing novel therapeutics that can induce nonapoptotic tumor cell death pathways is considered a powerful strategy for antitumor immune activation. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) presents a noninvasive modality with the ability to motivate immunogenic cell death (ICD), but is commonly subject to the hypoxic tumor microenvironment and impeded by protective cellular autophagy, which severely limits its immune effects and therapeutic outcomes. Herein, we develop a curcumin-derived photosensitizer (Cur-T) through a twisted-planar molecular engineering strategy for increasing photon absorption and …

Mechanisms and strategies for lignin-targeted pretreatment and β-glucosidase molecular engineering in enhancing cellulase hydrolysis efficiency: A review.

Lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), a second-generation feedstock for cellulosic ethanol production, requires efficient pretreatment. This step is critical in biorefinery processes. During enzymatic hydrolysis, lignin limits cellulase accessibility, whereas β-glucosidase (BGL) functions as a rate-limiting enzyme. This review systematically summarises lignin-targeted pretreatment methods, including acidic, organic solvent, deep eutectic solvent (DES), and biological approaches. Particular emphasis is placed on lignin structural modifications and their implications for enzyme engineering. In addition…

Atomically Precise Engineering of Synergistic Binding Sites in a Zirconium Metal-Organic Framework for the Capture of Perfluorooctanoic Acid.

The persistent contamination of water sources by perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) poses a major environmental and public health challenge. PFOA is a representative member of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a class of compounds characterized by high chemical stability, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity. Conventional water treatment processes are not fully effective in removing PFOA, underscoring the urgent need for advanced remediation strategies. Here, we report the development of Fe-MOF-808, a novel porous material obtained by incorporating binuclear iron species into the Zr6O8

Spin-State Engineering at the FeS2 Interface via CO2: Dual-Channel Activation of Fe(II) for Enhanced •OH Generation.

The low-spin electronic structure of pyrite (FeS2) severely restricts its activity in generating hydroxyl radical (•OH) through green oxidation. Herein, we report a dual-channel mechanism for in situ activation of natural FeS2 by greenhouse gas CO2 to overcome these limitations, with demonstrated potential for environmental remediation applications. Dissolution of CO2 generates H2CO3, which acidifies the aqueous environment and promotes Fe(II) release, exposing reactive surface sites. Concurrently, HCO3-/CO32- ligands coordinate with surface Fe(II) to form interfacial Fe-carbonate complexes. T

Cyano-Mediated Donor-Acceptor Engineering: A Rational Strategy to Boost Charge Transfer in Carbon Dots for NIR-II Bioimaging.

Carbon dots (CDs) have emerged as an important class of probes for biomedical imaging. However, engineering CDs with near-infrared emission, especially in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II), remains a significant challenge. Herein, we propose a cyano-mediated donor-acceptor (D-A) engineering strategy to synthesize NIR-II emissive CDs (FC-CDs), using benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarbonitrile, a molecule rich in electron-withdrawing cyano groups, as the precursor. Meanwhile, the in situ introduction of folic acid (FA) during the solvothermal process facilitates enhanced biocompatibility and tumor-…

Tunable electronic landscape in covalently linked dimer graphene architectures: Heteroatom engineering for selective monitoring and capture of toxic gases.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to investigate the structural, electronic, and gas-monitoring properties of pristine covalently linked dimer armchair hexagonal graphene (2AHG) and its heteroatom-doped derivatives (Al, B, N, O, P, S, and Si). The adsorption behaviour of environmentally hazardous CO2, SO2, and NO2 gases on pristine and doped 2AHG surfaces is systematically analyzed. Structural and binding energy results confirm that covalent dimer coupling, and heteroatom substitution preserve the thermodynamic stability of the graphene framework while inducing controll
