To observe antibody changes after praziquantel treatment in paragonimiasis, a total of 46 serum samples from 13 serologically diagnosed patients was collected for 4-28 months. Due to the already demonstrated specificity and usefulness of Listeria intracellular antigen in paraffin-embedded tissues for the direct diagnosis, we have used an indirect immunoperoxidase technique for the serological diagnosis of listeriosis in man, sheep and rabbit. Polysaccharide antigens were obtained from either the secretions produced during in vitro cultivation of Echinococcus granulosus protoscoleces or from mouse hydatid cyst membranes by phenol extraction. There has been controversy over the possible association of autoimmune thyroiditis with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We have therefore compared the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies and abnormal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in 41 SLE patients with age- and sex-matched controls. Twenty-one (51%) of the SLE patients had thyroid antibodies compared to 11 (27%) controls (p less than 0.05).
