Administrative logic of grassroots community epidemic prevention from the perspective of attention allocation: evidence from Wuhan City.

BACKGROUND: Chinese grassroots governments utilize fewer administrative resources to carry out tasks assigned by higher levels of government. They have refined their attention allocation into two dimensions: intensity and span, and have developed different action models for routine and non-routine tasks. This management style is becoming increasingly common in Chinese grassroots government operations. METHODS: This paper presented a multiple case study of policy practices in Wuhan City, Hubei Province. The study analyzed the attention allocation practices of China's grassroots government in h

Genetic characterization and pathogenicity analysis of three porcine epidemic diarrhea virus strains isolated from North China.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) is a highly contagious intestinal disease owing to porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) infection. It is extremely detrimental to newborn piglets and has caused huge economic losses to the global pig industry. In this study, three PEDV strains of G2a PEDV-WF/2023, G2b PEDV-SX/2024 and PEDV-HS/2024 were successfully isolated from small intestine tissue samples with the analysis of their molecular structure characteristics, genetic characteristics and pathogenicity. Notably, these three PEDV strains had multiple unique aa mutations and extensive N-glycosylation

Membrane protein CRISPR screen identifies RPSA as an essential host factor for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus replication.

UNLABELLED: Porcine epidemic diarrhea, caused by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), is one of the most devastating diseases in the global pig industry due to its high mortality rate in piglets. The host factors required for PEDV replication, including receptors, remain poorly understood. Here, we developed a porcine membrane-protein-scale CRISPR/Cas9 knockout (PigMpCKO) library and performed two rounds of PEDV infection. Ribosomal protein SA (RPSA), the known receptor of dengue virus, was found to be a potent host factor. Moreover, our research revealed that RPSA is involved in the replic

Effect of the COVID-19 Epidemic on the Association Between Antihypertensive Drug Interruption and the Risk of Major Cardiovascular Event in France.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare access, potentially impacting cardiovascular prevention by increasing and worsening interruptions in antihypertensive treatment. In this context, we aimed to assess whether the epidemic had modified the effect of antihypertensive interruptions on the risk of major cardiovascular events (MACE). METHODS: From the nationwide SNDS French health insurance databases (2018/01/01-2021/12/31), we identified patients with ≥1 year of continuous antihypertensive drug use. We then constituted a group of patients who interrupted an antihypertensive dur

Screening of Active Compounds Against Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus in Hypericum japonicum Thunb. ex Murray Extracts.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) remains a persistent threat to global swine production, necessitating urgent development of targeted interventions. Our previous research established that Hypericum japonicum Thunb. ex Murray (HJT) extract exhibited significant anti-porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) activity both in vivo and in vitro. Nevertheless, the principal bioactive constituents mediating this antiviral activity remained uncharacterized. In this study, it was demonstrated that ethanol eluates with 20% (v/v) and 60% (v/v) ethanol exhibited activity against PEDV. Phytochemical character

An Epidemic of Respiratory and Ocular Infections Caused by the Reemergence of a Recombinant Human Adenovirus, the Novel Type HAdV-B114 (P7H3F3).

Human adenoviruses of species B (HAdV-B) can cause upper respiratory tract infections and conjunctivitis, but also severe lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI). Although HAdV-associated LRTI are non-notifiable in Germany, typing data of our Adenovirus Reference Laboratory indicated an HAdV-B3 epidemic in 2023, with 67 samples initially typed as HAdV-B3 compared to < 10/year in the previous years. Circulation of a novel, highly virulent HAdV-B3 strain was suspected and complete viral genomic sequencing performed, revealing a recombinant phylogeny of the penton gene (P), which originated fro

1985: Forty years ago, the world opened its eyes to AIDS. History of the early years of the HIV epidemic.

At the end of 1980, Michael Gottlieb, a researcher at the University of California, was conducting a clinical study on deficiencies of the immune system when he heard of the case of a young man with a rare form of pneumonia due to Pneumocystis carinii (now known as Pneumocystis jirovecii), a protozoon that usually affects only people with a weakened immune system [1]. In the following months, Gottlieb discovered further cases of patients with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, oral candidiasis and a very low level of T lymphocytes. All were male and active homosexuals [2]. In reality the infectio

Effect of Supplementation with Black Soldier Fly Extract on Intestinal Function in Piglets Infected with Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has developed as a global problem for the pig business, resulting in significant financial losses. Black soldier fly extract (BFE) has been proven to improve intestinal growth in pigs after weaning. Consequently, the goal of the present investigation was to explore the effects of BFE supplementation on intestinal function in PEDV-infected piglets. Eighteen piglets were randomly allocated to three groups: control, PEDV, and BFE + PEDV. The piglets in the BFE + PEDV group received 500 mg/kg BW of BFE orally for seven days from day 4 to 10 of the study. On d
