Distinct cytotoxicity of water disinfection byproducts in human uroepithelium and Chinese hamster ovary cells.

Water disinfection unintentionally produces hundreds of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Although the cytotoxicity of over 100 DBPs has been extensively studied in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells, toxicity data in human cell models remain limited. Given the epidemiological association of DBPs with bladder cancer risk, it is necessary to conduct studies using cell lines that exhibit biological characteristics resembling human bladder cells, e.g., the immortalized human uroepithelium SV-HUC-1 cells. In this study, the cytotoxicity of 14 regulated and unregulated DBPs in SV-HUC-1 and CHO-K1 cell

Naturalistic psychedelic use and changes in depressive symptoms.

While growing evidence suggests that psychedelic-assisted therapy may have antidepressant effects in certain populations, little is known about the effects of psychedelic use on depressive symptoms in non-clinical, naturalistic settings. This observational cohort study included a large sample of US residents (18-50 years old) and longitudinally evaluated the relationships between naturalistic psychedelic use and changes in depressive symptoms. 21,990 participants completed the T1 survey and 12,345 completed the T2 survey (56.1 % retention). In total, 505 participants (i.e., 4.1 % of T2 survey

Determining population-specific risk factors for COVID-19 susceptibility and severity to inform future individual-level integrated risk scoring.

OBJECTIVES: Acute respiratory tract infections (ARI), including COVID-19, are a significant global health challenge with pandemic potential. Understanding factors influencing ARI susceptibility and severity in different populations is crucial for pandemic preparedness and mitigation. We investigated epidemiological risk factors for COVID-19 susceptibility and severity in the Israeli population. METHODS: Participants who took a COVID-19 PCR test between July 2021 and August 2022 completed an online survey including demographics, comorbidities, infection and vaccination status. We identified fa

Association of diurnal cortisol rhythm with chronic pain: Evidence from a prospective cohort study in community-dwelling adults.

Despite clinical evidence linking hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction to chronic pain, epidemiological findings remained mixed. Data from 1246 respondents aged 34-84 at baseline, obtained from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study and its subproject, the National Study of Daily Experiences (NSDE), were used to examine associations between salivary diurnal cortisol rhythms and chronic pain outcomes over a seven-year follow-up period, using mixed-effects logistic regression models adjusted for sociodemographics, lifestyle, and health-related factors. Furthermore, to ex

PEStimate: Predicting offspring disease risk after Polygenic Embryo Screening.

MOTIVATION: Polygenic embryo screening (PES) is a new technology in reproductive medicine, whereby human in-vitro fertilization (IVF) embryos are screened for their genetic risk of complex, polygenic diseases. PES aims to reduce the burden of polygenic diseases in offspring by prioritizing the selection of low-risk embryos. However, given that polygenic diseases are usually late-onset, PES outcomes cannot be evaluated empirically and must be estimated by epidemiological modeling. The commonly used liability threshold model has been previously used to predict PES outcomes. However, predictions

Quantifying viral pandemic potential from experimental transmission studies.

In an effort to avert future pandemics, surveillance studies aim to identify animal viruses at high risk of spilling over into humans. These studies have revealed substantial diversity in identified viruses. However, the number of tools currently available to assess pandemic risk is limited. Methods currently in use include the characterization of candidate viruses using in vitro laboratory assays and experimental transmission studies in animal models. However, transmission experiments yield relatively low-resolution outcomes that are not immediately translatable to projections of viral dynami

The prevalence of chronic kidney disease in people with severe mental illness: A systematic review protocol.

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness (SMI) are more likely to develop long-term physical health conditions, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, compared to people without SMI. This contributes to an inequality in life expectancy known as the 'mortality gap'. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing global health concern set to be the 5th leading cause of life-years lost by 2040. However, there is limited research exploring the relationship between CKD and SMI. This systematic review will aim to examine the prevalence and incidence of CKD among people with SMI. METH

Association of age at menarche and different causes of infertility: a retrospective study of 7634 women undergoing assisted reproductive technology.

BACKGROUND: Infertility has become a world-wide public health problem. To identify women in a high-risk of infertility at an early stage when more treatments are available, early risk factors such as age at menarche (AAM) are being investigated. AAM is often used in epidemiological studies as a marker of the timing of pubertal development and the onset of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis functions. Therefore, our study aimed to elucidate the association of AAM and different infertility causes in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology. METHODS: A total of 7643 women were retr

Air pollution and depression symptoms in middle-aged and older adults in Los Angeles County.

OBJECTIVE: Long-term exposure to air pollutants may be harmful to the brain, potentially through inducing oxidative stress or inflammation. Few studies of air pollution and depression have been conducted in the United States where this mental health disorder is prevalent among adults. We investigated associations between ambient air pollutants (O3, PM2.5 and NO2) and depression symptoms in middle-aged and older adults (n = 1496) without cardiovascular disease or cognitive impairment in Los Angeles, California. METHODS: Air pollution exposures were assigned to residential addresses using a geo

Constitutive androstane receptor, liver pathophysiology and chemical contaminants: current evidence and perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: The Constitutive Androstane Receptor (CAR) (NR1I3), a pivotal member of the xenosensor family, plays a key role in the hepatic detoxification of xenobiotic and endobiotic chemicals through the induction of the expression of drug-metabolizing enzymes and transporters. CAR's involvement extends beyond detoxification, influencing gluconeogenesis, lipogenesis, bile acid regulation, and cellular processes such as proliferation, tissue regeneration, and carcinogenesis. This review explores CAR regulation by various factors, highlighting its role in mediating metabolic changes induced b
