Reappearance of sympathetic skin response below a thoracic level-9 complete spinal cord injury.

Reappearance of sympathetic skin response (SSR) below lesion is reported in a patient with a complete thoracic-9 spinal cord injury 6 months following injury. SSR was elicited by electrical stimulation of supraorbital nerve (SON) and pudendal nerve (PN). SON stimulation induced SSRs only in the hand. SSRs were initially absent below the level of SCI but reappeared only with PN stimulation. This case suggests that 6 months following a complete lesion, the isolated spinal cord can generate a SSR. Possible underlying mechanisms and implications for autonomic plasticity below spinal lesion are dis

Cochlear implantation results in patients with Kearns-Sayre syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the evidence for a cochlear, retrocochlear, or central site of lesion for deafness in two cochlear implant recipients with Kearns-Sayre Syndrome (KSS). DESIGN: Speech perception data and electrically evoked Auditory Brainstem (eABR) and Middle Latency Responses were obtained in two patients with KSS and compared with a group of non-KSS implant recipients. RESULTS: Speech perception data and electrophysiological responses for the patients with KSS were similar to those obtained in non-KSS patients. CONCLUSIONS: Results are consistent with an initial cochlear site of le

Fixation-sensitive myoclonus in Lafora disease.

The authors report a patient with Lafora disease, whose myoclonus was suppressed by passive eye closure. Neurophysiologic studies disclosed that fixation was the most important enhancer of myoclonus. Magnetoencephalographic studies of visual evoked fields revealed abnormal activation of the visual corticocortical pathway via the insular cortex not seen in controls. The authors hypothesize that abnormal activation of the insular cortex may be involved in triggering the mechanism of fixation-sensitive myoclonus.

Early visual seizures and progressive myoclonus epilepsy in neuronopathic Gaucher disease due to a rare compound heterozygosity (N188S/S107L).

PURPOSE: Gaucher disease, the inherited deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase, is characterized by genotypic and phenotypic heterogeneity. We recently characterized the glucocerebrosidase alleles of a patient with an unusual clinical presentation of type 3 Gaucher disease. METHODS: Initial clinical manifestations appeared at age 11 years as visual seizures. RESULTS: Subsequent progressive myoclonus and generalized seizures were consistent with an adolescent-onset form of progressive myoclonus epilepsy. However, a specific diagnosis was established only at age 16, because of t

Somatosensory representation of the digits and clinical performance in patients with focal hand dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to incorporate magnetoencephalography and clinical testing to describe differences in somatosensory organization and sensorimotor function of the hand in patients with focal hand dystonia, a target-specific disorder of voluntary movement that interferes with fine motor control during the performance of rapid, repetitive, skilled movements. DESIGN: This descriptive study included prospective, quasi-experimental comparisons between groups. RESULTS: Patients with focal hand dystonia demonstrated deficits in physical variables, sensory processing, and mot

ABR findings, electrocochleograms and caloric tests in vertebrobasilar ischemic rats.

In rats with ischemia induced by occlusion of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) or vertebral artery (VA), we investigated the auditory brainstem response (ABR), electrocochleogram and caloric test result. Upon occlusion of the VA, there was no change of the ABR, whereas in the caloric test the duration of nystagmus upon stimulation of both ears shortened. Upon occlusion of the AICA, the cochlear blood flow (CoBF) showed one of three patterns of change no change: n = 5; decrease: n = 10; and transient decrease with recovery: n = 5. The cochlear potentials were dependent on the resi

Adolescent onset of idiopathic photosensitive occipital epilepsy after remission of benign rolandic epilepsy.

PURPOSE: We describe 2 girls, aged 19 years, who experienced a rolandic seizure at ages 4 and 5, respectively, together with the interictal … interictal occipital spikes, and a photoparoxysmal response limited to the occipital lobes. Visual evoked potentials were greatly increased in amplitude. One patient had two visual attacks only and remained seizure free after 4 years of follow-up, while the other had seizures controlled by an association of valproate and carbamazepine. CONCLUSIONS: Clinical and n …

Progressive neural hearing impairment: case report.

This report describes a patient whose ability to understand speech had so deteriorated over 20 years time that she was being considered for a cochlear implant, despite the fact that pure-tone sensitivity loss had not deteriorated proportionately. An unusual combination of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and auditory evoked potential (AEP) results are described. Click-evoked and distortion product emissions were present and normal-appearing. Auditory brainstem and middle latency responses were totally absent but the N1-P2 complex of the long-latency response was present. The case illustrates the c

The pathophysiology and pharmacology of photic cortical reflex myoclonus.

We studied 6 patients with myoclonus elicited by flash stimulation (1-15 Hz). Multichannel electromyographic recording showed a rostrocaudal recruitment order for the generalized myoclonic jerk. In all patients, each flash induced a large (36.9 +/- 5.7 microV) frontal biphasic wave with an onset latency of 42 msec that preceded the earliest muscle response in the face by at least 4 msec (range, 4-7 msec), the activity in the biceps by 11 to 14 msec, and the activity in tibialis anterior by 26 to 34 msec. Occipital potentials evoked by the same flash stimulation had a latency of 33.7 msec and w

Disruption of cochlear potentials by chemical asphyxiants. Cyanide and carbon monoxide.

While ischemia, hypoxic hypoxia, and carbon monoxide (CO) have received extensive study designed to characterize mechanisms by which they disrupt cochlear function, little data are available concerning cyanide's potential to disrupt auditory function. In this study, disruption of the compound action potential (CAP) and endocochlear potential (EP) by cyanide and CO was compared in rats treated with potassium cyanide (KCN) (7 mg/kg ip), saline, CO (35 ml/kg ip), and air. Acute KCN administration significantly suppressed CAP and EP transiently. The effect was seen initially on EP with CAP impairm

Impaired spatial learning after saturation of long-term potentiation.

If information is stored as activity-driven increases in synaptic weights in the hippocampal formation, saturation of hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) should impair learning. Here, rats in which one hippocampus had been lesioned were implanted with a multielectrode stimulating array across and into the angular bundle afferent to the other hippocampus. Repeated cross-bundle tetanization caused cumulative potentiation. Residual synaptic plasticity was assessed by tetanizing a naïve test electrode in the center of the bundle. Spatial learning was disrupted in animals with no residual LTP

The role of statistical image features in material perception: psychophysics and EEG decoding with natural and synthesized images.

The present study investigated the extent to which human perception of surface materials and their physical properties depend on low-level and high-level image statistics. Using 200 images of real-world surfaces from 10 material categories, along with their corresponding Portilla-Simoncelli synthesized images preserving low-level statistics and style-synthesized images preserving feature statistics in CNN, we examined whether material categorization performance, ratings of surface properties, and material decoding accuracy from visual evoked potentials (VEPs) differed between the synthesized a…

Activation of SNr GABA neurons drives liver-brain-eye axis dysfunction in hepatic encephalopathy.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is frequently accompanied by visual dysfunction, yet the mechanisms underlying the liver-brain-eye axis remain unclear. We established mouse models of acute hepatic encephalopathy (AHE) using thioacetamide and chronic hepatic encephalopathy (CHE) using bile duct ligation, confirming hyperammonemia and visual impairment by electroretinogram (ERG) and visual evoked potentials (VEPs). Retinal analyses revealed preserved structure in AHE, whereas CHE induced significant thinning of the ganglion cell layer (GCL), inner nuclear layer (INL), and outer plexiform layer (OPL)…

Distractor-induced deafness: ERP correlates of auditory distractor processing.

Distractor-induced deafness (DID) refers to the impaired detection of an auditory target when preceded by a rapid sequence of auditory distractors sharing the target's features. We examined whether the neural signatures underlying DID resemble those found in visual distractor-induced blindness (DIB). Participants completed a rapid serial auditory presentation (RSAP) task in which distractor number and cue-target onset asynchrony were systematically manipulated. Behaviorally, target detection declined with increasing distractor number, closely replicating the behavioral DIB effect. Event-relate

Mapping the basal temporal language network: a SEEG functional connectivity study.

The Basal Temporal Language Area (BTLA) is recognized in epilepsy surgery setting when cortical electrical stimulation (CES) of the ventral temporal cortex (VTC) trigger anomia or paraphasia during naming tasks. Despite acknowledging a ventral language stream, current cognitive language models fail to properly integrate this entity. In this SEEG study we used cortico-cortical evoked potentials in nine epileptic patients to assess and compare the effective connectivity of 73 sites in the left VTC of which 26 were deemed eloquent for naming after CES (BTLA). Eloquent sites connectivity supports …

Altered cortical processing of sensory input in Huntington disease mouse models.

Huntington disease (HD), a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder, manifests as progressively impaired movement and cognition. Although early abnormalities of neuronal activity in striatum are well established in HD models, there are fewer in vivo studies of the cortex. Here, we record local field potentials (LFPs) in YAC128 HD model mice versus wild-type mice. In multiple cortical areas, limb sensory stimulation evokes a greater change in LFP power in YAC128 mice. Mesoscopic imaging using voltage-sensitive dyes reveals more extensive spread of evoked sensory signals across the cortical surface

The influence of temporal asynchrony on character-speech integration in Chinese children with and without dyslexia: An ERP study.

Dyslexic readers have been reported to show abnormal temporal acuity and multisensory integration deficiency. Here, we investigated the influence of temporal intervals on Chinese character-speech integration in children with and without dyslexia. Visual characters were presented synchronously to the onset of speech sounds (AV0) or before speech sound by 300 ms (AV300). Event-related potentials (ERP) evoked by congruent condition (speech sounds presented with congruent Chinese characters) and by baseline condition (speech sounds presented with Korean characters) were compared.
