Factors contributing to infant overfeeding with Hispanic mothers.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate existing evidence on factors potentially contributing to infant overfeeding among Hispanic mothers that may explain the high infant overweight rates often seen among this ethnic group. DATA SOURCES: Electronic databases including CINHAL and MEDLINE were searched for relevant studies published from 1998 to January 2012. Related article searches and reference list searches were completed on all included studies. STUDY SELECTION: Thirty-five studies (nine qualitative, 15 cross-sectional, nine cohort, and two longitudinal) were identified that met the following inclusion c

A Comprehensive Lifestyle Peer Group-Based Intervention on Cardiovascular Risk Factors: The Randomized Controlled Fifty-Fifty Program.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases stem from modifiable risk factors. Peer support is a proven strategy for many chronic illnesses. Randomized trials assessing the efficacy of this strategy for global cardiovascular risk factor modification are lacking. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the hypothesis that a peer group strategy would help improve healthy behaviors in individuals with cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: A total of 543 adults 25 to 50 years of age with at least 1 risk factor were recruited; risk factors included hypertension (20%), overweight (82%), smoking (31%), and physica

Cortico-basal ganglia circuits involved in different motivation disorders in non-human primates.

The ventral striatum (VS) is of particular interest in the study of neuropsychiatric disorders. In this study, performed on non-human primates, we associated local perturbation with monosynaptic axonal tracer injection into medial, central and lateral VS to characterize anatomo-functional circuits underlying the respective expression of sexual manifestations, stereotyped behaviors and hypoactive state associated with loss of food motivation. For the three behavioral effects, we demonstrated the existence of three distinct cortico-basal ganglia (BG) circuits that were topographically organized

Physical activity, dietary habits, screen time, and sleep duration among Saudi male adolescent athletes and non-athletes: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence represents a pivotal stage for the development of lifelong health behaviors. In Saudi Arabia, rising obesity and sedentary lifestyles among youth represent growing public health challenges. While organized sports may positively influence lifestyle behaviors, evidence comparing Saudi adolescent athletes and non-athletes across multiple behavioral domains remains limited. PURPOSE: To compare lifestyle habits, including physical activity levels, sedentary behaviors, dietary practices, and sleep duration, between Saudi male adolescent athletes and non-athletes. METHOD: A

Depression and Anxiety Changes Associated with Matched Increases in Physical Activity in Education-, Self-Regulation-, and Self-Regulation Plus Relaxation-Based Obesity Treatments in Women: A Pilot Study Investigating Implications for Controlling Emotional Eating.

Background/Objectives: Improvements in depression and anxiety, associated with moderate increases in physical activity, might induce reductions in emotional eating, especially in women with obesity, where emotion-driven eating is highly problematic. This pilot, field-based study sought to assess whether physical activity increase, itself, primarily predicts improved mood (biochemical theories) or if psychosocial factors associated with cognitive-behavioral treatment are principal correlates (behavioral theories). An aim was to inform improved treatment processes. Methods: Women with obesity pa

Composite Meal-Related Behaviors and Health Indicators: Insight from Large-Scale Nationwide Data on Korean Adults.

Objectives: Multidimensional dietary patterns provide a more comprehensive assessment of meal-related behavior than single behaviors, yet evidence on their variation across adulthood and association with health factors relevant to healthy aging is limited. This study examined meal-related behavior pattern distribution by age and identified predictors of unhealthy patterns. Methods: Data from 47,332 adults aged ≥ 18 years in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2014-2022) were analyzed. Participants were divided into three age groups: young adults (18-39 years), middle-ag

Food Resource Management and Healthy Eating Focus Associates with Diet Quality and Health Behaviors in Low-Income Adults.

Nutrition education and food resource management (FRM) can assist food-insecure individuals in acquiring healthy and affordable food. We aimed to assess the relationships between FRM skills and healthy eating focus with diet quality and health-related behaviors in low-income adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey of 276 low-income adults living in a low-food-access community in Northeast Connecticut. Through analysis of covariance, adults who usually or always had a meal plan, considered reading nutrition labels important, made a gr

Dietary Intakes and Food Habits of Wheelchair Basketball Athletes Compared to Gym Attendees and Individuals who do not Practice Sport Activity.

BACKGROUND: Mediterranean diet (Med-D) has been previously suggested for athletes, but Paralympics usually have a low intake of plant foods. Orthorexia nervosa (ON) can drive dietary intake of both athletes and gym attendees. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare dietary intakes and food habits of elite wheelchair basketball athletes (WBA) and able-bodied individuals who practice or not sport activity and with different fat mass percentage (FM%). METHODS: We recruited 15 WBA from the Italian National team and 3 control groups (15 each group): healthy individuals who do not practice any sports activ

The Association between Free Sugars Consumption and Laryngopharyngeal Reflux: A Cross-Sectional Study among Chinese Adolescents.

There is a lack of evidence to show prevalence of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and the association between LPR and dietary factors. Adolescents consume the most amount of free sugars among the Chinese population. We conducted this study to investigate the prevalence of LPR in Chinese adolescents and explore the association between free sugars consumption and LPR. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1517 middle school students in Hunan, China. An online questionnaire was applied to collect data on the condition of LPR, consumption of free sugars and other self-reported covariates. Height

Therapeutic Landscape for NAFLD in 2020.

Lifestyle modifications focused on healthy eating and regular exercise are the primary recommendations for patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). However, for multiple societal, psychological, physical, genetic, and epigenetic reasons, the ability of people to adopt and sustain such changes is challenging and typically not successful. To end the epidemic of NASH and prevent its complications, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, pharmacological interventions are now being evaluated in clinical trials. Treatments include drugs targeting energy intake, energy disposal, l

Pregnant Women Consume a Similar Proportion of Highly vs Minimally Processed Foods in the Absence of Hunger, Leading to Large Differences in Energy Intake.

BACKGROUND: The eating in the absence of hunger (EAH) experimental paradigm measures intake of highly palatable, highly processed foods when sated. However, no studies have examined EAH in pregnant women. OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to investigate whether EAH in pregnant women differs by level of food processing and to examine relationships of EAH with hedonic hunger, addictive-like eating, and impulsivity. DESIGN: EAH was assessed in a counterbalanced crossover feeding substudy in which participants completed two free-access eating occasions following a standardized meal during their sec

How extreme dieting becomes compulsive: A novel hypothesis for the role of anxiety in the development and maintenance of anorexia nervosa.

The US National Institute of Mental Health's Research Domain Criteria (NIMH RDoC) advocates the study of features common to psychiatric conditions. This transdiagnostic approach has recently been adopted into the study of anorexia nervosa (AN), an illness that can be considered compulsive in nature. This has led to the development of an account of AN that identifies key roles for the heightened reinforcement of starvation, leading to its excessive repetition, and goal-directed system dysfunction. Considering models of illness in other compulsive disorders, we extend the existing account to exp

Breastfeeding Infants with Ankyloglossia: Insight into Mothers' Experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding difficulty from ankyloglossia can affect both the mother and baby in a breastfeeding dyad. With renewed emphasis in today's culture on breast milk, mothers may feel increasing pressure to breastfeed, and the inability for some to do so may cause significant distress. Recently, online parenting forums have seen exponential growth; these forums allow mothers to connect with peers undergoing similar life transitions. The purpose of this study was to review online discussions regarding ankyloglossia to understand mothers' experiences with breastfeeding. MATERIALS AND M

[Why do men eat how they eat? : Considerations from a nutritional- and gender-sociological perspective].

There are nutritional differences between the sexes: eating behavior in men is often rated as "Требует внимания" compared with that in women. Nutrition in men and women is rather more of an expression of social gender roles and expectations than biologically determined. Meat and alcohol, for instance, are regarded as "powerful" foods and thus have masculine connotations. Fruit and vegetables, on the other hand, are considered "weak" and therefore feminine foods. This overlooks the fact that a "typically" female diet is often oriented toward attractiveness and is associated with restricted eating beha

The effect of long-term taurine supplementation and fructose feeding on glucose and lipid homeostasis in Wistar rats.

The nonprotein amino acid taurine has been shown to counteract the negative effects of a high-fructose diet in rats with regard to insulin resistance and dyslipidemia. Here we examined the long-term (26 weeks) effects of oral taurine supplementation (2% in the drinking water) in fructose-fed Wistar rats. The combination of fructose and taurine caused a significant increase in fasting glucose compared to the control diet without changing hepatic phosphoenol pyruvate carboxykinase mRNA levels. The combination of fructose and taurine also improved glucose tolerance compared to control. Neither a h
