The value of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography with the additional help of tumor markers in cancer screening.

Cancer screening is a major healthcare issue. Screening modalities are constantly changing due to improvements in technology. Whole body positron emission tomography (PET) with 18F-fluoro-2 deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) and the additional help of the serum levels of tumor markers have been considered as non-invasive methods for cancer screening in asymptomatic subjects. A total of 1283 subjects underwent whole-body FDG PET studies with the additional help of the serum levels of tumor markers in our center for cancer screening. The final diagnoses were confirmed by other imaging modalities or pathologi

18FDG PET versus high-dose 67Ga scintigraphy for restaging and treatment follow-up of lymphoma patients.

To date, only one published study has directly compared 67Ga scintigraphy (low dose, planar) with planar dual-head gamma camera 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18FDG) imaging for the purpose of treatment follow-up monitoring in lymphoma patients, and no data on restaging are available. The present study reports the direct comparison of high-dose (297-370 MBq) 67Ga planar and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging and conventional 18FDG positron emission tomography (PET) for restaging and treatment follow-up of lymphoma patients versus a gold standard consisting of morphological ima

Utility of fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in differentiated thyroid carcinoma with negative radioiodine scans and elevated serum thyroglobulin levels.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine the role of fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in the follow-up of patients who underwent total thyroidectomy and iodine-131 ((131)I) ablation therapy for differentiated thyroid cancer and presented increased thyroglobulin levels with negative (131)I and thallium-201 ((201)Tl) scans. METHODS: Two patients with follicular carcinoma and eight with papillary tumors underwent total thyroidectomy and (131)I therapy until the (131)I scan was negative. (131)I and (201)Tl scans were performed with negative results in all cas

Central pain after pontine infarction is associated with changes in opioid receptor binding: a PET study with 11C-diprenorphine.

Using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose and 11C-diprenorphine positron emission tomography (PET), we investigated alterations in glucose metabolism and opioid receptor binding in a patient with central poststroke pain, which developed after a small pontine hemorrhagic infarction. In comparison with normal databases, reduced 11C-diprenorphine binding was more accentuated than the hypometabolism on the lateral cortical surface contralateral to the symptoms, and a differential abnormal distribution between the tracers was seen in pain-related central structures. These results show that 11C-diprenorphine PET

Histological verification of positive fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose findings in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer.

Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose and positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is a new imaging modality used in the follow-up of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer if the results of (131)I scintigraphy are negative in spite of an elevated thyroglobulin level. The aim of this retrospective analysis was to estimate the value of FDG-PET regarding the operability of patients with positive findings. From January 1994 to October 1997, we investigated 60 patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma by FDG-PET. Thirteen patients were operated on after positive findings. Most of these lesions we

Imaging of mediastinal lymph nodes: CT, MR, and FDG PET.

The evaluation of mediastinal lymph nodes is an important aspect of staging in patients with non-small cell lung cancer. Anatomic imaging of lymph nodes with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been limited by the relatively low sensitivity and specificity of these techniques. Advances in physiologic imaging of mediastinal lymph nodes with 2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) have resulted in improved diagnostic accuracy in the determination of nodal status. Despite the limitations of CT, this technique still plays an im

Basal ganglia and thalamo-cortical hypermetabolism in patients with spasmodic torticollis.

UNLABELLED: The basal ganglia are thought to be involved in the primary dystonias, largely because of the repeated demonstration of neuropathological changes in these nuclei in the secondary dystonias. A hyperactivity of a network involving basal ganglia has been suggested in experimental animal dystonia. To test this hypothesis in humans, we studied the functional correlates of primary cervical dystonia using [18F]FDG and PET. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Regional cerebral glucose metabolism (rCMRglc) was measured in 10 patients with idiopathic torticollis (6 drug-free and 4 drug-naive) and in 15 n

Striatal 18F-dopa uptake and brain glucose metabolism by PET in patients with syndrome of progressive ataxia.

Striatal 18F-Dopa uptake and brain glucose metabolism were studied by PET with 6-L-[18F]flurodopa and [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose in 11 patients with syndrome of progressive ataxia. Five of the 11 patients were diagnosed as having cerebellar cortical degeneration (CCD), including 3 with late cerebellar cortical atrophy and 2 with Holmes type hereditary ataxia while 6 demonstrated olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA). The caudate and putaminal 18F-Dopa uptake ratios to the occipital cortex in CCD showed no significant difference from those in the controls. On the other hand, those with OPCA decrease

Extracranial head and neck: PET imaging with 2-[F-18]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose and MR imaging correlation.

The aim of this study was to define and quantitate the normal anatomy of the extracranial head and neck with 2-[fluorine-18]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET). This information was used to study 12 patients with primary squamous cell carcinomas. In all cases, the lymphoid tissue of the Waldeyer ring and the palatine and lingual tonsils could be differentiated from the airway, striated muscle, osseous structures, and salivary glands. Striated muscle had markedly less activity than lymphoid or salivary gland tissue. In the 12 patients with primary tumors, FDG PET d

Regional cerebral glucose utilization in chronic organic mental disorders associated with alcoholism.

Localized cerebral utilization rates for glucose (CMRglu) were determined in 10 detoxified patients with alcoholic organic mental disorders and in 7 age-equivalent normal volunteers using [18F]2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography. Although gray and white matter CMRglu were not significantly different, normalized CMRglu was increased in the left cerebellar and parietal cortical regions and decreased in the right posterior white matter and anterior temporal regions of alcoholic patients, and the pattern of regional CMRglu differed between the two groups. The results suggest funct

Positron emission tomography imaging of regional cerebral glucose metabolism.

The (F-18) fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) technique to measure local cerebral metabolic rate for glucose (LCMRglu) is well accepted and widely used by many institutions around the world. A large number of studies has been carried out in normal volunteers and patients with a variety of CNS disorders. Several investigators have noted that no significant age-related changes in cerebral glucose use occur with normal aging. Some important and interesting findings have been revealed following sensory, motor, visual, and auditory stimulations. Functional imaging with FDG in certain neurologic disorders has

Translocator Protein 18 kDa-Targeted Total-Body PET Imaging Reveals Immune-Specific Vascular Inflammation in Large-Vessel Vasculitis: A Prospective Head-to-Head Comparison with 18F-FDG.

Accurate assessment of vascular inflammation in large-vessel vasculitis (LVV) remains challenging, especially in patients with normal inflammatory markers or inconclusive 18F-FDG PET findings. The translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO), a marker of inflammatory process, has emerged as a promising molecular target for imaging vascular inflammation in LVV. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 11 treatment-naïve patients with LVV and 11 healthy controls who underwent 90-min dynamic total-body 18F-DPA714 PET/CT imaging. Ten patients also underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT for direct comparison. We assessed SUVs,
