Characteristics and clinical correlates of white matter changes in brain magnetic resonance of migraine females.

OBJECTIVE: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) were often found in migraine patients. The aim of study was to characterize WMHs, assess the … l hemisphere (p=0.024) whereas in MA were found bilaterally. WMHs were most commonly located in the frontal lobes. In MO lesions were small ≤3mm and present in almost all MO patients (p=0.027). CONCLUSION: WMHs are present in more than one third of migraine females, regardless of aura. WHMs are located supratentorially, subcortically and in the frontal lobes. …

MR Elastography Demonstrates Unique Regional Brain Stiffness Patterns in Dementias.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate age-corrected brain MR elastography (MRE) findings in four dementia cohorts (Alzheimer disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia, and normal pressure hydrocephalus) and determine the potential use as a differentiating biomarker in dementia subtypes. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Institutional review board approval and written informed consent were obtained to perform MRE on 84 subjects: 20 patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus, eight with Alzheimer disease, five with dementia with Lewy bodies, five with frontotemporal dem

No neuropathological evidence for a direct topographical relation between microbleeds and cerebral amyloid angiopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral microbleeds correspond to blood breakdown products, including hemosiderin-containing macrophages around small vessels … ebral amyloid angiopathy in 44.3 % of them. Cerebral microbleeds were more frequent in parietal and frontal lobes followed by the occipital region and basal ganglia. In contrast, cerebral amyloid angiopathy was most frequent in the occipital lobe. There was no significant topographical association between cerebral amyloid angiopathy presence or severity and ce …

Widespread heterogeneous neuronal loss across the cerebral cortex in Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease characterized by neuronal degeneration in the basal ganglia and cerebral cortex, and a variable symptom profile. Although progressive striatal degeneration is known to occur and is related to symptom profile, little is known about the cellular basis of symptom heterogeneity across the entire cerebral cortex. To investigate this, we have undertaken a double blind study using unbiased stereological cell counting techniques to determine the pattern of cell loss in six representative cortical regions from the frontal, parietal

Grey and white matter changes across the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-frontotemporal dementia continuum.

There is increasing evidence that amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) lie on a clinical, pathological and genetic continuum with patients of one disease exhibiting features of the other. Nevertheless, to date, the underlying grey matter and white matter changes across the ALS-FTD disease continuum have not been explored. In this study fifty-three participants with ALS (n = 10), ALS-FTD (n = 10) and behavioural variant FTD (bvFTD; n = 15) as well as controls (n = 18), underwent detailed clinical assessment plus structural imaging using voxel-based morphometry (

Benzodiazepine receptor distribution in severe intractable tinnitus.

Tinnitus affects nearly 50 million people in the United States, with a minority demonstrating marked functional impairment. Alterations of g … subjects to healthy controls revealed an insignificant trend toward reduction in BZR density in the frontal lobes bilaterally (p = .000) and a reduction in the cerebellum (p = .045). Current understanding suggests GABA receptors and the temporal lobe system as the final common pathway. This pilot study suggests possible alterations on 123I-iomazenil SPECT imag …

BACKGROUND: Although limited environmental exploration in autism is an obvious behavioral feature and may be a manifestation of "restricted … ovements, and magnetic resonance imaging measures of the cerebellar vermis, whole brain volume, and frontal lobes in 14 autistic and 14 normal children was investigated. Children were exposed to a large room with several exploration containers and instructed to play. Exploration behavior was videotaped and scored for percentage of time engaged in exploration, …

[A case of cavernous dural arteriovenous fistula resulting in intracerebral extravasation during transvenous embolization].

Cortical venous drainage has been described as one of the major risk factors for dural arteriovenous fistula, which may induce venous hypert … the affected side. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a small intracerebral hemorrhage in the right frontal lobe. Cerebral angiography revealed a dural arteriovenous fistula in the right cavernous sinus draining into the right olfactory vein via the uncal vein, as well as into the superior and inferior ophthalmic veins. This unusual cortical venous reflux was …

Reduction of cerebral cortical [3H]ouabain binding site (Na+,K(+)-ATPase) density in dementia as evaluated in fresh human cerebral cortical biopsies.

Na+,K(+)-ATPase density in human cerebral cortex was for the first time studied by vanadate facilitated [3H]ouabain binding to intact samples. Fresh human cerebral cortical biopsies were obtained as a result of diagnostic frontal lobe biopsy from patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) syndrome and associated dementia. For control measurements post-mortem samples were obtained from patients without clinically observed dementia. [3H]ouabain binding kinetics were evaluated: when incubating samples in 1 microM [3H]ouabain binding equilibrium was obtained after 6 h of incubation, non-spe…

Paroxysmal slow waves mark ictal networks.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy diagnosis and treatment monitoring are hindered by the episodic, heterogeneous expression of seizures and by normal-appearing scalp electroencephalography (EEG) in many patients. We previously described paroxysmal slow-wave events (PSWEs), brief epochs of broadband slowing detectable on EEG in people with epilepsy. In the present study, we sought to further define the clinical significance of this biomarker. METHODS: We used intracerebral and epidural recordings in a paraoxon rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy, as well as long-term video-EEG monitoring (LTM) in patients w

Hypoconnectivity in the frontal lobe and superior temporal gyrus correlated with poorer linguistic intelligence quotient (IQ). The caudate nucleus emerged as a critical hub, with its eigenvector centrality showing positive associations with both spatial skills and full-scale intelligen …

Altered Functional Connectivity Patterns of Parietal Subregions Contribute to Cognitive Dysfunction in Patients with White Matter Hyperintensities.

BACKGROUND: The white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are considered as one of the core neuroimaging findings of cerebral small vessel disease and independently associated with cognitive deficit. The parietal lobe is a heterogeneous area containing many subregions and play an important role in the processes of neurocognition. OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between parietal subregions alterations and cognitive impairments in WHMs. METHODS: Resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) analyses of parietal subregions were performed in 104 right-handed WMHs patients divided into mild (n
