As with the Ebola outbreak, global under-5 mortality and morbidity should be considered a public health emergency of international concern.

INTRODUCTION: Nine events have been assessed for potential declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). A PHEIC is defined as an extraordinary event that constitutes a public health risk to other states through international spread and requires a coordinated international response. The WHO Director-General convenes Emergency Committees (ECs) to provide their advice on whether an event constitutes a PHEIC. The EC rationales have been criticised for being non-transparent and contradictory to the International Health Regulations (IHR). This first comprehensive analys

Despite considerable global investment, only 60% of people who live with HIV currently receive antiretroviral therapy. The sustainability of current programmes remains unknown and key incidence rates are declining only modestly. Given the complexities and expenses associated with lifelong medication, developing an effective curative intervention is now a global priority. Here we review why and where a cure is needed, and how it might be achieved. We argue for expanding these efforts from resource-rich regions to sub-Saharan Africa and elsewhere: for any intervention to have an effect, region-s

This article explores the homecoming experiences of international health care workers who responded to the 2014 to 2016 West African Ebola outbreak. Interviews with 11 frontline international medical staff were undertaken and data thematically analyzed. It was found that international health care workers faced an unforeseen risk of stigmatization upon their return home, related to others' fears of their infectious status. Media representations of the disease appear to have played a significant role in heightening societal perceptions of the risks associated with the returning health care worke

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversities (CAs) have been associated with adult-onset chronic pain. However, to date, most single country studies on this association have been undertaken in Western countries. This study examined the association in Japan where information is scarce.
METHODS: Data were drawn from the World Mental Health Survey Japan, a population-based cross-sectional survey undertaken in 11 areas of Japan in 2002-2006. We analyzed data from adults aged ≥20 years who provided information on CAs occurring before age 18 years and chronic pain (n = 1740). Cox proportional hazard models we

BACKGROUND: We report the main findings of the WHO Multicountry Survey on Maternal and Newborn Health (WHOMCS), which aimed to assess the burden of complications related to pregnancy, the coverage of key maternal health interventions, and use of the maternal severity index (MSI) in a global network of health facilities.
METHODS: In our cross-sectional study, we included women attending health facilities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East that dealt with at least 1000 childbirths per year and had the capacity to provide caesarean section. We obtained data from analysis of hosp

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated that women have greater mobility disability than men. The goals of this research were: 1) to assess the gender gap in mobility difficulty in 70 countries; 2) to determine whether the gender gap is explained by sociodemographic and health factors; 3) to determine whether the gender gap differs across 6 regions of the world with different degrees of gender equality according to United Nations data.
METHODS: Population-based data were used from the World Health Survey (WHS) conducted in 70 countries throughout the world. 276,647 adults aged 18 years

The Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) has been one of the most ambitious global health efforts in recent times. Social mobilization (SM) has been a strategic component of the PEI. Yet, a close-up analysis of SM dynamics seems to be lacking in the health communication literature. We examine critical aspects of the PEI experience in an attempt to move from dominant informational perspectives to a focus on emerging challenges in polio eradication efforts and new levels of complexity to SM. We examine available literature on communication and public health, available data on SM experiences that s…

Twenty-seven years have now elapsed since the first description of AIDS in homosexual men in San Francisco, USA. Since those early reports in 1981, millions of people have died from this disease and millions are living with HIV infection worldwide. The rate of new cases of HIV infection has stabilized in some parts of the developed world, but in other areas of the world, especially in Africa, south-east Asia and eastern Europe, the number of newly infected individuals continues to rise alarmingly. Despite international commitment, there is still much to be done to improve access to antiretrovi

Boston University (BU) has a long history of a strong social mission and commitment to service. In August 2003, BU made an institutional commitment to work with the country of Lesotho to tackle the human capital implications of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Surrounded by South Africa, and with a population of two million, Lesotho, a stable democracy, suffers the world's third-highest adult HIV prevalence rate of about 24%. The initiation of the program required a substantial initial institutional investment without any promise of payback. This allowed BU to begin work in Lesotho while searching for a

Heart failure (HF) is a well-described final common pathway for a broad range of diseases however substantial confusion exists regarding how … countries to improve the quality of evidence in global HF registries could contribute to achieving global health targets to reduce noncommunicable diseases and overall improvements in population health.

Malaria remains a major public health issue worldwide and a repeated cause of illness and death in tropical and subtropical areas. It is caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium and transmitted through bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes, but it can also be transmitted via blood transfusions, organ transplants, and congenitally from mother to child. Despite decades of intervention efforts, millions of new cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths still occur each year, primarily in low- and middle-income countries. This review summarizes current epidemiological data on t

As one of major global public health challenges, malaria control is crucial to building a global community of health for all. The 2026 "China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges" provides a new opportunity for China's participation in international cooperation for malaria control. This article introduces the strategic significance and practical path of China's participation in international cooperation on malaria control in the new era, and discusses policy recommendations for optimizing the cooperation model between China and African countries, aiming to provide insights into accelerati

BACKGROUND: Adjustment of haemoglobin concentrations for elevation is essential for anaemia assessments of both individuals and populations. Whereas the previous WHO anaemia definitions released in 2001 used an elevation adjustment derived from small sample sizes with limited representativeness, the 2024 WHO global anaemia definitions reflect empirical assessments across several geographies and settings derived from population-representative surveys. We aimed to assess the effect of these changes on estimates of global anaemia burden.
METHODS: In this population-based modelling study, using a

Purpose of the ReviewThis review examines the multifaceted barriers and facilitators influencing PrEP uptake among priority populations, including MSM, PWUD, sex workers, transgender individuals, and AGYW, with a focus on generating actionable recommendations for governments, providers, and community organisations to scale effective HIV prevention models globally.Recent FindingsDespite PrEP's proven efficacy, uptake remains constrained by intersecting individual, provider, structural, and systemic barriers. Key challenges include limited awareness, misinformation, provider-level stigma, struct

BACKGROUND: National surveys have suggested that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a prevalent and impairing condition. However, there are few cross-national data on OCD, with data particularly scarce in low- and middle-income countries. Here we employ data from the World Mental Health surveys to characterize the onset, course, severity, and treatment of OCD across a range of countries in different geographic regions of the world.
METHODS: Data came from general population surveys carried out in 10 countries (Argentina, Australia, Colombia, Iraq, Poland, People's Republic of China, Portu

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Recently, a Rome working group defined individuals with occasional constipation (OC). We used the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study database to study the global prevalence of OC, its comorbidities, quality of life (QoL) impact, and health care utilization, compared to subjects without constipation symptoms (No Constipation), or with functional constipation (FC).
METHODS: A total of 54,127 adults (26,578 females; mean age, 43.7 years) from 26 countries completed an internet survey including Rome IV diagnoses, demographics, psychosocial data, QoL, and medical history.
