Nodular scabies is a hypersensitivity reaction to scabietic infestation characterized by persistent pruritic nodules that can remain even after treatment of the initial infestation. We present a demonstrative case of an infant who presented with nodular scabies.

OBJECTIVE: Acute spontaneous bullous urticaria is an extremely rare entity, and there are few reports with blister formation in acute urtica … the underlying pathogenesis could not be clarified. The patient recovered by a short course of antihistamine and systemic steroid treatment, and the lesions did not recur during a 2-year follow-up.
CONCLUSION: Short-term systemic steroid in addition to oral antihistamines resulted in prompt recovery in a patient with acute urticaria complicated by bullae.

Angioedema is most commonly caused by mast-cell mediators, such as histamine. This type of angioedema is sometimes accompanied by urticaria and can be effectively treated with antihistamines or glucocorticoids. BACKGROUND: The common cold is an upper respiratory tract infection, most commonly caused by a rhinovirus. It affects people of all age groups and although in most cases it is self limiting, the common cold still causes significant morbidity. Antihistamines are commonly offered over the counter to relieve symptoms for patients affected by the common cold, however there is not much evidence of their efficacy.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of antihistamines on the common cold.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL (2015, Issue 6), MEDLINE (1948 to July week 4, 2015), EMBASE (2010 to August 2…

Topical application of antihistamines commonly leads to sensitization for patients, but systemic administration of antihistamines rarely induces allergic hypersensitivity, which is mainly linked to phenothiazine-derived and piperazine-derived compounds. We report a 70-year-old woman whose medical history included lichen planus, and who was referred by the dermatology department of our hospital for suspected allergy to corticosteroids. The reason for referral was that on the fourth day of treatment with prednisone and hydroxyzine, the patient presented a bilateral highly pruritic palmar erythem…

PURPOSE: This review summarizes the pharmacological effects of over-the-counter (OTC) heartburn drugs, and the implications for treating frequent heartburn.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed and SCOPUS were searched across all years to identify well-controlled, randomized clinical studies that assessed mechanism of action and efficacy.
CONCLUSIONS: Antacids can transiently neutralize acid in the esophagus, but do not significantly affect gastric pH or prevent subsequent heartburn episodes. Histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2 RAs) rapidly develop tolerance with repeat dosing, and exhibit an analgesic eff…

Urticaria, also known as hives, and angioedema, where the swelling occurs below the skin instead of on the skin, are extremely common but th … ria and recurrent angioedema. Treatment needs to focus on the use of long-acting, non-sedating, antihistamines. Corticosteroids may be used acutely but not long term.

It is useful to define atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) as a non-infectious inflammatory condition of the ocular surface, which is associated with atopy. The pathogenesis of the disorder is not completely understood. The diagnosis is based on the patient's history and the clinical manifestations. Successful management of AKC, which can become a serious condition, requires a multidisciplinary approach that involves prevention, dermatological care and an adequate ophthalmological treatment algorithm.

Antihistamines (AH) have been classified into first and second generation according to their pharmacokinetic properties, structural characteristics and adverse effects. The effects on the central nervous system (CNS) are determined basically by their capacity to cross the hematoencephalic barrier and attach to central H1 receptors. Benzodiazepines (BZD) are drugs with effects on the CNS following their union to the specific location of GABA receptors type A. At low doses, the BZD have sedative and anticonvulsive effects, and as the dose increases it leads to sedation, amnesia and finally uncon…

BACKGROUND: Rhinitis symptoms can be produced or augmented by neural mechanisms. Azelastine, a pharmacologic agent with potent H1-receptor blocking activity can inhibit the release of various mediators implicated in the pathogenesis of nasal hyperresponsiveness. The therapeutic benefits of topical intranasal azelastine on symptoms of perennial nonallergic rhinitis (NAR) are in part because of an impact on neural mechanisms. Assessment of changes in the concentration of substance P (SP) in nasal lavage fluid before and after saline hypertonic challenge may be a means of assessing the effect of

BACKGROUND: Systemic mastocytosis is a rare medical disorder in which an increased number of mast cells can precipitate immediate hypersensitivity reactions, leading to hypotension, shock, and death. It is characterized by persistent elevated serum tryptase levels. The few published reports on pregnancy complicated by systemic mastocytosis indicate favorable maternal and fetal outcomes in gravidas known to have systemic mastocytosis.
CASE: A pregnant woman treated with terbutaline at 31 weeks of gestation developed severe hypotension which resulted in fetal demise; this was initially diagnose
