Human vulnerability and variability in the cold: Establishing individual risks for cold weather injuries.

Human tolerance to cold environments is extremely limited and responses between individuals is highly variable. Such physiological and morphological predispositions place them at high risk of developing cold weather injuries [CWI; including hypothermia and/or non-freezing (NFCI) and freezing cold injuries (FCI)]. The present manuscript highlights current knowledge on the vulnerability and variability of human cold responses and associated risks of developing CWI. This review 1) defines and categorizes cold stress and CWI, 2) presents cold defense mechanisms including biological adaptations, ac

Caregiver Burden Is Associated With the Physical Function of Individuals on Long-Term Oxygen Therapy.

BACKGROUND: The influence of physical function of individuals on long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) on caregiver burden is underexplored. This study investigated the association of caregiver burden with physical function of individuals on LTOT and the association between caregiver's burden and quality of life. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Informal caregivers were assessed for burden using the Caregiver Burden Inventory (CBI), the European Quality of Life 5 Dimension questionnaire index (EQ-5D index) and its Visual Analog Scale (EQ-VAS). Physical function of subjects on LTOT was ass

Long Term Recidivism Rates Among Individuals at High Risk to Sexually Reoffend.

Preventive detention provisions in the US and Canada assume we can identify, in advance, individuals at high risk for sexual recidivism. To test this assumption, 377 adult males with a history of sexual offending were followed for 20 years using Canadian national criminal history records and Internet searches. Using previously collected information, a high risk/high need (HRHN) subgroup was identified based on an unusually high levels of criminogenic needs (n = 190, average age of 38 years; 83% White, 13% Indigenous, 4% other). A well above average subgroup of 99 individuals was then identifie

Perspectives Regarding Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Among Individuals with Mental Illness.

Most people with co-occurring opioid use disorder (OUD) and mental illness do not receive effective medications for treating OUD. To investigate perspectives of adults in a publicly-funded mental health system regarding medications for OUD (MOUD), we conducted semi-structured telephone interviews with 13 adults with OUD (current or previous diagnosis) receiving mental health treatment. Themes that emerged included: perceiving or using MOUDs as a substitute for opioids or a temporary solution to prevent withdrawal symptoms; negative perceptions about methadone/methadone clinics; and viewing MOU

Individual and Binary Mixture Toxicity of Five Nanoparticles in Marine Microalga Heterosigma akashiwo.

The investigation of the combined toxic action of different types of nanoparticles (NPs) and their interaction between each other and with aquatic organisms is an important problem of modern ecotoxicology. In this study, we assessed the individual and mixture toxicities of cadmium and zinc sulfides (CdS and ZnS), titanium dioxide (TiO2), and two types of mesoporous silicon dioxide (with no inclusions (SMB3) and with metal inclusions (SMB24)) by a microalga growth inhibition bioassay. The counting and size measurement of microalga cells and NPs were performed by flow cytometry. The biochemical

Influence of an Intensive Speech Therapy Program on the Speech of Individuals with Cleft Lip and Palate.

Introduction  Compensatory articulations are speech disorders due to the attempt of the individual with cleft palate/velopharyngeal dysfunction to generate intraoral pressure to produce high-pressure consonants. Speech therapy is the indicated intervention for their correction, and an intensive speech therapy meets the facilitating conditions for the correction of glottal stop articulation, which is the most common compensatory articulation. Objective  To investigate the influence of an intensive speech therapy program (ISTP) to correct glottal stop articulation in the speech of individuals wi

Short-Term High-Fat Diet Alters Acetaminophen Metabolism in Healthy Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen is metabolized through a nontoxic sulfation and glucuronidation pathway and toxic oxidation pathway (via CYP2E1 and CYP1A2). A short-term high-fat diet induces alterations in the steatotic liver and may alter hepatic drug enzyme activity. In the case of acetaminophen, these alterations may result in an increased risk of hepatotoxicity. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the effect of a 3-day hypercaloric high-fat diet on the plasma levels of acetaminophen metabolites. METHODS: Nine healthy subjects participated in this randomized, crossover intervention st

Voice Symptoms and Quality of Life in Individuals With Marfan Syndrome: A Cross-Sectional Study.

PURPOSE: Marfan Syndrome (MFS) is a connective tissue disorder that affects skeletal, ocular, pulmonary, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems. Symptoms may lead to diminished quality of life (QoL) in individuals with MFS compared with healthy individuals. Currently, there is little evidence regarding the impact of MFS on voicing and QoL. This study examined perceptions of voicing difficulties and QoL among persons with MFS. METHOD: A total of 356 participants with a self-reported diagnosis of MFS completed the Quality-of-Life Index (QLI) and voice handicap index-10 (VHI-10) and provide

Postprandial Glycemic Dips Are Associated With Metabolic Disorders and CVD Risk in Euglycemic Individuals.

CONTEXT: Metabolic disorders and cardiovascular disease (CVD) threaten human health. Many studies have assessed the phenomenon of metabolic disorders and CVD in patients with diabetes. However, in euglycemic individuals, the relationships between glucose regulation, metabolism, and CVD remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to explore the associations between postprandial glucose dips, metabolic disorders, and CVD risk. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Thyroid disorders, Iodine status and Diabetes Epidemiological survey (TIDE study), which included 38 878 euglycemic individuals from al

Preserved navigation abilities and spatio-temporal memory in individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

Cerebellar abnormalities have been reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Beyond its role in hallmark features of ASD, the cerebellum and its connectivity with forebrain structures also play a role in navigation. However, the current understanding of navigation abilities in ASD is equivocal, as is the impact of the disorder on the functional anatomy of the cerebellum. In the present study, we investigated the navigation behavior of a population of ASD and typically developing (TD) adults related to their brain anatomy as assessed by structural and functional MRI at rest. We used the Starm

Speech and language development and genotype-phenotype correlation in 49 individuals with KAT6A syndrome.

Pathogenic KAT6A variants cause syndromic neurodevelopmental disability. "Speech delay" is reported, yet none have examined specific speech and language features of KAT6A syndrome. Here we phenotype the communication profile of individuals with pathogenic KAT6A variants. Medical and communication data were acquired via standardized surveys and telehealth-assessment. Forty-nine individuals (25 females; aged 1;5-31;10) were recruited, most with truncating variants (44/49). Intellectual disability/developmental delay (42/45) was common, mostly moderate/severe, alongside concerns about vision (37/

Individual Case Safety Report Replication: An Analysis of Case Reporting Transmission Networks.

INTRODUCTION: The basis of pharmacovigilance is provided by the exchange of Individual Case Safety Reports (ICSRs) between the recipient of the original report and other interested parties, which include Marketing Authorization Holders (MAHs) and Health Authorities (HAs). Different regulators have different reporting requirements for report transmission. This results in replication of each ICSR that will exist in multiple locations. Adding in the fact that each case will go through multiple versions, different recipients may receive different case versions at different times, potentially influ

Using machine learning to predict individual patient toxicities from cancer treatments.

PURPOSE: Machine learning (ML) is a powerful tool for interrogating datasets and learning relationships between multiple variables. We utilized a ML model to identify those early breast cancer (EBC) patients at highest risk of developing severe vasomotor symptoms (VMS). METHODS: A gradient boosted decision model utilizing cross-sectional survey data from 360 EBC patients was created. Seventeen patient- and treatment-specific variables were considered in the model. The outcome variable was based on the Hot Flush Night Sweats (HFNS) Problem Rating Score, and individual scores were dichotomized
