Hypolipemia associated with the wasting condition of rabbits infected with Strongyloides papillosus.

Rabbits develop a wasting condition in the intestinal stage of Strongyloides papillosus infection. Serum inflammatory cytokine and lipid profiles were investigated in five rabbits infected with S. papillosus and five uninfected pair-fed controls to ascertain whether the disease is inflammatory cytokine-mediated cachexia. Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) was detected in one infected animal at Day 7 after infection. Interleukin (IL)-1 was detected in three infected, and one control, animals at Day 28. IL-6 remained unchanged in both the groups. Infected animals developed hypolipemia, incl

Interleukin-8 receptor knockout mice have subepithelial neutrophil entrapment and renal scarring following acute pyelonephritis.

Interleukin (IL)-8 receptor knockout (KO) mice were shown to have a dysfunctional neutrophil response to urinary tract infection and to develop renal scarring. Intravesical Escherichia coli infection stimulated epithelial chemokine secretion and IL-8 receptor expression in control mice. Neutrophils migrated through the tissues and crossed the epithelial barrier into the urinary tract lumen. In murine IL-8 receptor homologue (mIL-8Rh) KO mice, infection triggered a chemokine response, and neutrophils were recruited but failed to traverse the mucosal barrier and accumulated under the epithelium.

Condom use prevents genital ulcers in women working as prostitutes. Influence of human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Control of genital ulcer disease (GUD) is a proposed intervention to slow the dissemination of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Programs for the control of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) should focus on groups of high-frequency transmitters, such as prostitutes and their clientele. This study illustrates the interaction between the prevalence of chancroid, use of barrier prophylaxis against STDs, and HIV infection in a population of female prostitutes in Nairobi. Four hundred and twenty three women were evaluated. Despite the increased use of condoms, the prevalence of genita

Risk factors for urinary tract infection.

The authors carried out a case-control study in 1982-1983 to investigate the possible influence of behavioral factors on the risk of urinary tract infection. Study participants were college women attending a student health service. Cases were 43 women with culture-confirmed urinary tract infection. There were two control groups: 149 women with upper respiratory infection and 227 women visiting the gynecology clinic. Using each set of controls, the study confirmed that sexual intercourse is a risk factor and that there is a dose-response effect for increasing levels of coital frequency. The stu

Extracellular Vesicles from Dendritic Cells Protect Against Sporothrix brasiliensis Yeast Cells.

Sporotrichosis is an emerging subcutaneous mycotic zoonosis that affects the skin, lymphatic system, and other organs of humans and animals. Like other infectious fungal diseases, it becomes even more severe when it affects immunosuppressed patients. This infection has a global distribution and is endemic in some regions of Brazil and it is an important zoonotic public health problem. The disease is caused by a complex of at least four pathogenic species, including Sporothrix brasiliensis. The immunological response against these species has not yet been completely elucidated. Still, structure

Saudi Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Hypertension: Schistosomiasis and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Schistosomiasis is caused by infection with the parasite Schistosoma, which is a flat-worm or fluke. The dominant species are Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma japonicum, and Schistosoma haematobium. Schistosomiasis is the third most common parasitic disease in the world after malaria and amoebiasis. It is endemic in more than 70 countries affecting about 200 million people worldwide, of whom 80% are in sub-Saharan Africa. There are pockets of infection in north-eastern Brazil, near the Yangtze River in China, and some pockets in south East Asia. In the East Mediterranean regions, the Schistoso

The intraperitoneal inoculation of Lactobacillus casei in mice induces total protection against Trichinella spiralis infection at low challenge doses.

The following effects of Lactobacillus casei in NIH mice were evaluated: the establishment of Trichinella spiralis adult worms in the intestine (AWI), larvae per gram of muscle tissue (LPG), levels of IgG and IgA, and levels of IL-4 and IFN-γ. One hundred and eight mice were allocated at random into 18 groups of six mice each. Each mouse in treated or non-treated groups was inoculated intraperitoneally once a week during 6 weeks with L. casei or phosphate-buffered solution. Later each mouse was challenged either with 200, 50, or 25 T. spiralis infective larvae. When the infection dose was 200

Chronic viral hepatitis enhances the risk of infection but not acute rejection in renal transplant recipients.

To assess the impact of chronic viral hepatitis on host immune response, we analyzed the incidence of acute rejection and the frequency of infections in 86 patients infected with hepatitis B and C viruses and had developed clinical evidence of chronic liver disease and 1283 control patients who were transplanted at our center during the same period, but had no evidence of chronic viral hepatitis. To compare the mean number of rejections and the mean number of infections between the two groups, we used multivariate linear regression analysis, which allowed us to adjust simultaneously for the ef

Toxoplasma induced cytokine release syndrome is critically dependent on the expression of pore-forming Perforin-Like Protein-1.

Acute virulence in Toxoplasma gondii is linked to an excessive proinflammatory cytokine cascade during laboratory murine infection. Previous work showed that T. gondii secretes a pore forming protein, PLP1, that is required for efficient cytolytic egress from host cells. Deletion of the PLP1 gene results in defective egress from infected culture cells and a marked reduction in parasite virulence. The goal of the present study was to gain insight into the nature of the attenuated virulence observed in PLP1 knockout compared to wild type (WT) RH parasites. Using in vivo bioluminescence imaging,

A socio-ecological framework for examining foodborne parasitic infection risk.

Human liver fluke infection through the consumption of raw freshwater fish is one of the foodborne parasitic infections of global concern. Despite decades of health campaign efforts, high prevalence of infection remains in different areas of the Lower Mekong Basin. This necessitates the consideration of the infection differences between places and the human-environment complexities of disease transmission. This paper used the socio-ecological model as a framework to unraveled the social science dimensions of liver fluke infection. We conducted questionnaire surveys in Northeast Thailand to gat

The association between bowel resection and the risk of nontyphoidal salmonella infection: a nationwide propensity score-matched cohort study.

Nontyphoidal salmonella (NTS) infection has a high mortality rate. Bowel resections affect gut microbiota and immune function, and the association between bowel resection and NTS infection in human beings has not been addressed. We conducted a nationwide propensity score (PS)-matched cohort study to clarify this association. Data from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database of Taiwan were used to establish a case-cohort with bowel resections from 2000 to 2013. Informed consent was waived by the Institutional Review Board of China Medical University Hospital (CMUH104-REC2-115) because all pe
