Patients on hemodialysis frequently encounter multiple complications during the course of therapy. Anemia occurs from impaired erythropoiesis stemming from chronic kidney disease and loss of blood and iron during the hemodialysis process. Dietary restrictions are often necessary in patients on hemodialysis to maintain adequate nutritional status and prevent the accumulation of nutrients that are not effectively removed with hemodialysis. These factors can significantly affect a patient's iron status and result in iron-restricted erythropoiesis and eventually absolute iron deficiency. This arti

Iron and copper are essential transition metals that permit the facile transfer of electrons in a series of critical biochemical pathways. Recent work has identified the specific proteins involved in the absorption, transport, utilization, and storage of iron and copper. Remarkable progress is being made in understanding the molecular basis of disorders of human iron and copper metabolism. This review describes these proteins and examines the clinical consequences of new insights into the pathophysiology of genetic abnormalities affecting iron and copper metabolisms. Hereditary hemochromatosis

Red cell and iron status parameters were studied in a group of 44 children undergoing tonsillectomy for recurrent throat infections and in a control group of 40 healthy children. In the patient group, before tonsillectomy, 8 children presented a latent iron deficiency and 15 a decrease in serum ferritin levels. This altered iron status can be attributed to a reduced intestinal iron absorption, due to recurrent infections. One and seven days following surgery there was a significant fall in serum iron, serum transferrin and transferrin saturation, in parallel with an increase of serum ferritin

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of dietary diversity with anaemia and iron status among primary school-aged children in South Africa.
DESIGN: An analysis was conducted with pooled individual data from the baseline surveys from three previously conducted independent intervention studies. Two different dietary diversity scores (DDS) were calculated based on data from 1-day (1-d) and 3-day (3-d) dietary recall periods, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the associations of dietary diversity with anaemia and iron status.
SETTING: KwaZulu-Natal and North We

HHC is the most common inherited metabolic disease among the white population worldwide, with a gene frequency of about 10% and a frequency of homozygosity of about 1 of 250. Many patients harbor a common haplotype of informative markers on chromosome 6p2l.23, suggesting a strong founder effect exerted by a common Celtic ancestor. With the advent of screening tests (serum Tf saturation, fe), many subjects with HHC are being identified before development of cirrhosis or diabetes mellitus, and early detection is important because prompt and vigorous iron reduction prevents development of such co

We hypothesized that polyphenol addition (gallic acid, caffeic acid, quercetin) to potato protein-iron complexes could modulate protein digestibility and iron bioavailability, addressing iron deficiency risks exacerbated by low-bioavailability iron in plant-based diets. Quercetin increased protein digestion in the stomach and small intestine, while gallic and caffeic acids only increased its digestion in the stomach. Quercetin and caffeic promoted nearly iron release at all polyphenol-to-complex levels studied (0.5:1 to 3:1), whereas gallic acid only promoted iron release at higher ratios (3:1

Anemia is frequently seen in patients with chronic kidney disease and also in those with cancer. There are factors in the pathogenesis of anemia that are common to both clinical conditions, with iron insufficiency, inflammation, and upregulation of hepcidin activity playing a part in both chronic disease states. Diagnostic laboratory markers for detecting functional iron deficiency in renal disease and oncology are not ideal, and the most widely available tests, such as serum ferritin and transferrin saturation, have poor sensitivity and specificity. Other tests incorporating a surrogate for i

Iron is an essential element to the well functionning of the organism and requires careful maintenance of its homeostasis. This is mainly due to hepcidin, a hormone secreted by the liver that controls the flow of iron within the body. It has a hyposideremic action by reducing the expression of ferroportin, the only protein known to this day, which can export iron into the extracellular environment. This has the effect of decreasing intestinal absorption and increasing intracellular retention, especially in macrophages. Hepcidin is stimulated by elevation of iron and inflammation while activati

Although iron is essential for bacteria, the nutrient presents problems of toxicity and solubility. Bacteria circumvent these problems with the aid of iron storage proteins where Fe3+ is deposited and, when necessary, mobilized as Fe2+ for metabolic requirements. In Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Fe3+ is compartmentalized in bacterioferritin (BfrB), and its mobilization as Fe2+ requires specific binding of a ferredoxin (Bfd) to reduce the stored Fe3+. Blocking the BfrB-Bfd complex leads to irreversible iron accumulation in BfrB and cytosolic iron deprivation. Consequently, given the intracellular iro

PCBs are a family of persistent environmental toxicants with a wide spectrum of toxic features, such as immunotoxicity, hepatoxicity, endocrine disruption effects, and oncogenic effects. To date, little has been done to investigate the potential influence of PCB exposure on iron metabolism. Deregulated iron would lead to either iron deficiency or iron excess, coupled with various diseases such as anemia or hemochromatosis. Iron metabolism is strictly governed by the hepcidin-ferroportin axis, and hepcidin is the key regulator that is secreted by hepatocytes. Here, we found that PCB-77 could go

We have developed a polyacrylamide gradient gel electrophoretic method to quantitate apo-, mono-, and diferric transferrin based upon differences in their molecular size. Purified transferrin saturated to different extents (3% to 98%) with iron showed proportions of the three forms as predicted from an approximately random distribution of iron between the two metal-binding sites. The iron distributions in sera of 14 normal individuals similarly correlated with the predicted values. In contrast, 22 of 43 patients with diseases associated with abnormalities in iron or transferrin metabolism had

Iron is an essential trace metal element for maintaining vital functions, and it is involved in hemoglobin synthesis, redox reaction, enzyme activity, cell proliferation and apoptosis in various cells. Iron deficient-related diseases represented anemia are well-known, on the other hand, iron overload disease has attracted little attention. Excessive iron produces hydroxyl radicals via Fenton/Haber-Weiss reaction, causing organ damage in hereditary iron overload diseases. Additionally, it has been clarified that iron accumulation is involved in the pathological conditions even in metabolic dise

Analysis of radioactive iron kinetics was performed using a multi-compartment model on a series of 300 patients having either a quantitative (aplasia, haemolysis, iron deficiency) or qualitative (dyserythropoiesis, agnogenic myeloid metaplasia) anomaly of iron metabolism. Calculations were performed using a mammillary model of iron metabolism. The study demonstrated that the flux of iron from the plasma to the exchangeable compartment was a constant fraction of the global iron flux, equal to 15%, in those cases without dyserythropoiesis. This suggested that a constant correction for calculatio

Iron is a key nutrient for normal central nervous system (CNS) development and function; thus, iron deficiency as well as iron excess may result in harmful effects in the CNS. Oligodendrocytes and astrocytes are crucial players in brain iron equilibrium. However, the mechanisms of iron uptake, storage, and efflux in oligodendrocytes and astrocytes during CNS development or under pathological situations such as demyelination are not completely understood. In the CNS, iron is directly required for myelin production as a cofactor for enzymes involved in ATP, cholesterol and lipid synthesis, and o

Iron deficiency anemia is one of the leading public health issues being faced by the global population currently. The present research was an attempt to determine the synergistic effect of Galacto Oligosaccharides and iron fortificants on serum iron, serum ferritin, serum transferrin and total iron binding capacity in anemic rats. To serve the purpose, eight different types of fortified feed were prepared with varying concentrations of Iron Fortificants (NaFeEDTA and FeSO4) while the varying dosage of galacto oligosaccharides was dissolved separately in water to be fed to anemic rats. Afterwar

A supply of iron is of vital importance if lymphocyte proliferation is to proceed successfully and two major sources of iron are available, intracellular stores and serum transferrin. We have investigated the relative importance to the human T lymphocyte of these two sources of iron by depleting them of intracellular iron with the chelator desferrioxamine and by culturing them in medium completely depleted of transferrin iron. The chelator decreased mitogen-stimulated proliferation of human peripheral blood T cells, in a dose-dependent manner, in the absence of extracellular transferrin-iron.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is a prevalent condition globally, often necessitating intravenous iron therapy. We present a case of a 71-year-old female with IDA who experienced a severe anaphylactic reaction shortly after commencing a sodium ferric gluconate complex infusion. Prompt cessation of the infusion and administration of epinephrine with steroids led to rapid recovery. This case underscores the importance of recognizing and managing rare yet potentially life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions to intravenous iron formulations, highlighting the need for vigilance among healthcare pr

Plastocyanin and cytochrome c6 from the green alga Scenedesmus vacuolatus were immunoquantified in cells grown under different concentrations of copper and iron. Plastocyanin expression was constitutive, its synthesis was not significantly affected by iron availability, and increases with copper availability. On the contrary, cytochrome c6 synthesis is repressed by copper, and only residual amounts of the protein were detected at 0.1 micromol/L copper. Under copper deficiency, cytochrome c6 is slightly dependent on iron. In natural environments, plastocyanin seems to be the predominant electro

A patient with regional enteritis had received iron dextran for treatment of iron deficiency. Subsequently he developed a large (3.1 g/100 ml) IgG-K serum spike which had precipitin activity against dextran sulfate but not a variety of other antigens. There has been no evidence of multiple myeloma and the spike gradually disappeared spontaneously over the course of 2 years. We speculate that the monoclonal protein may have developed as a response to the iron dextran injections under the immunologic stress of a chronic inflammatory disease.

INTRODUCTION: Iron-deficiency anaemia is common in gynaecological oncology patients. Blood transfusions are immunosuppressive and carry immediate and long-term risks. Oral iron replacement remains the standard of care but requires prolonged treatment courses associated with gastrointestinal side effects, poor compliance and variable absorption in cancer patients. Intravenous iron has been shown to decrease the need for allogeneic blood transfusion in gynaecological oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy, but the efficacy of this treatment in the preoperative period is unknown. The goal of t
