Sudden maternal deaths probably due to obstetrical pulmonary embolism in Malaysia for 1991.

Obstetric pulmonary embolism forms the most serious vascular problem during pregnancy. The following report is a retrospective study into maternal deaths in Malaysian mothers probably due to obstetrical pulmonary embolism. Obstetric pulmonary embolism can be divided into amniotic fluid embolism and obstetric blood clot embolism. There were 37 maternal deaths attributable to this cause -9.9 per cent of all maternal deaths to blood clot embolism and 6.7 per cent to amniotic fluid embolism. Most cases were diagnosed clinically because a postmortem examination was not done. Eleven cases of embolis

Maternal plastic exposure, placental microplastics, and neonatal anthropometry outcomes: Evidence from a human placenta study.

Microplastic (MP) pollution is a pervasive environmental concern, with growing evidence that MPs can cross biological barriers and accumulate in human tissues, including the placenta. This raises significant concerns for fetal development, yet maternal exposure pathways and their quantitative associations with neonatal health remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to quantify the concentration and characteristics of MPs in human placenta, identify behavioral and environmental predictors of maternal exposure, and evaluate the relationship between placental MP burden and neonatal outcomes

Co-occurring maternal emotional well-being and lifestyle profiles from pregnancy to postpartum and offspring developmental outcomes: A prospective cohort study.

Maternal emotional well-being and lifestyle behaviors co-occur during the perinatal period, yet most studies examine them separately. Using data collected since 2019 from the Longitudinal Examination Across Prenatal and Postpartum Health in Taiwan, a prospective cohort of 539 mother-child dyads, we assessed maternal depressive symptoms, eudaimonic well-being, fruit and vegetable intake, physical activity, and sleep duration from early pregnancy to 2 years postpartum. Group-based multi-trajectory modeling identified co-occurring maternal profiles. Birth weight was analyzed with multiple linear

Relationship between maternal lipid profile during the third trimester and the risk of small-for-gestational-age birth: exploring inadequate gestational weight gain as a mediator.

BACKGROUND: Lipids play crucial roles in maternal and foetal metabolism; however, their effects on birth weight remain unclear. Moreover, the potential mediating role of inadequate gestational weight gain (iGWG) in this association remains unexplored. The objective of this study was to assess maternal lipid profiles in the third trimester and their associations with the risk of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants, focusing on the combined effects of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglycerides (TG). This study also examined whether iGWG influenced this relationship. METH

The maternal microbiome-epigenome axis in gestational diabetes: pathogenesis, diagnosis, and emerging therapies.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication with profound short- and long-term consequences for both mother and offspring. Beyond transient hyperglycemia, GDM represents a multifactorial metabolic condition shaped by the interplay of genetic predisposition, epigenetic regulation, and alterations in the maternal microbiome. Dysbiosis of the gut and reproductive tract microbiota contributes to inflammation, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia during pregnancy, while microbial metabolites influence placental physiology and epigenetic remodeling of key metabolic and imp

Prenatal neonicotinoid insecticide exposure, maternal steroid hormone levels, and precocious puberty in girls: A nested case-control study.

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) are globally prevalent environmental contaminants with suspected endocrine-disrupting properties, yet their effects on maternal steroid hormone homeostasis and the subsequent risks of precocious puberty (PP) in offspring remain poorly understood. In this prospective nested case-control study embedded in a birth cohort in Wuhan, China (2012-2014; follow-up to 2023), we included 202 PP cases (115 incomplete [ICPP], 87 central [CPP]) and 606 matched controls. Third-trimester maternal urine samples were analyzed for 19 NNI biomarkers (8 detected in ≥74.1% of the s

Molecular regulation and functional benefits of trophoblast syncytialization in optimizing maternal-fetal nutrient allocation.

The placenta governs maternal-fetal nutrient allocation during pregnancy, primarily mediated by placental villi composed of multinucleated syncytiotrophoblasts (STBs) and mononucleated cytotrophoblasts (CTBs) in humans. STBs are formed through cell fusion of CTBs, a process termed syncytialization. The placental villi are bathed in maternal blood sinus, functioning as a critical unit for bidirectional exchange of nutrients and wastes between the mother and fetus, hormone production, and defense against pathogen infection. Trophoblast fusion is regulated by an intricate network of hormones, gro

Water consumption contributes to maternal PFAS exposure: From source to metabolic perturbations.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widespread persistent pollutants and pose a risk to human health. However, the transfer efficiencies (TEs) of PFAS from source water into maternal serum, and its metabolic pathways linking PFAS exposure and human disease are remain unclear. Here, we present an integrative study combining multi-water and serum PFAS analysis, lipidomics, and machine learning to decipher TEs and PFAS-metabolism interactions. Analyzing 30 PFAS across source water (N = 18), tap water (N = 18), water during drinking water treatment process (DWTP, N = 12), and serum of p

Transport-Related Risk Factors for Intraventricular Hemorrhage in Preterm Neonates: An Exploratory Analysis.

UNLABELLED: Preterm neonates face unique risks during ground transport due to environmental factors and the urgent need for critical interventions. Neuroprotection during transport is essential to safeguard this vulnerable population from developing intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH). Despite efforts to optimize neonatal transport practices, specific transport-related factors contributing to IVH remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: The study aims to identify transport-related factors contributing to IVH, including 1) the association between critical ground transport (miles loaded, time, infan

Unraveling sexually dimorphic offspring behaviors: maternal premating stress and the neuro-microbial-metabolic network.

Psychosocial stress in women is a major public health concern, yet the intergenerational mechanisms linking maternal premating stress to offspring neuropsychiatric vulnerability remain incompletely understood. Here, female mice were exposed to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) prior to mating, and offspring were assessed for neurodevelopment, adult behavior, and multi-omics profiles. Premating stress induced neurodevelopmental delays and sexually dimorphic adult phenotypes: female offspring exhibited hyperactivity and social deficits, whereas male offspring displayed anxiety. Microbiome analysis of maternal and neonatal microbial communities associated with the different delivery modes based on 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing.

OBJECTIVE: With the rising number of cases of non-vaginal delivery worldwide, scientists have been concerned about the influence of the different delivery modes on maternal and neonatal microbiomes. Although the birth rate trend is decreasing rapidly in Taiwan, more than 30 percent of newborns are delivered by caesarean section every year. However, it remains unclear whether the different delivery modes could have a certain impact on the postpartum maternal microbiome and whether it affects the mother-to-newborn vertical transmission of bacteria at birth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address thi
