The preparations comprise the entire soft tissue covering (skin, fat and aponeurosis). The scanning electron microscope enables a three dimensional examination of the surface of the collagen fibers. The stable L-form of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a typical protoplast type L-form. Cells are surrounded by a trilamellar cytoplasmic membrane only. A 33 year old woman developed a soft mass in the left anterior neck following treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis. An incisional biopsy was performed and a cold abscess drained. Histology confirmed a diagnosis of tuberculosis. In addition, there were numerous intracellular bodies which resembled the Michaelis-Gutmann bodies of malakoplakia. This case however displayed some atypical histological, histochemical and ultrastructural features, which are highlighted in this report. The mass responded to combination antituberculous treatment.

Calcium content and pineal concretions were studied in young (2-3 months) and old (28 months) Wistar rats. Samples, deep-frozen by liquid propane isopentane and freeze-dried were analysed by means of X-ray microanalysis in a scanning electron microscope. Total semi-quantitative measurements revealed that pineals of old rats showed a marked increase of calcium compared with the pineals of young rats.
