Using the Penn State Worry Questionnaire in the Peripartum.

Purpose: Pathological worry is a major feature of anxiety in the peripartum, and we sought to examine the factor structure, validity, and reliability in the peripartum of a scale used to measure worry in the general population (the Penn State Worry Questionnaire, PSWQ). Materials and Methods: Pregnant/postpartum women (N = 295) were followed at up to six visits, which included completion of the PSWQ and other psychological scales. Principal components analysis, descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, chi-square tests, and mixed linear regression models were used to evaluate scale reliability a

Psychological changes after coronary angiographic intervention: pre-post comparison and follow-up.

Epidemiological studies demonstrate the relevance of cardiovascular diseases for health policies and medical care, especially coronary heart diseases and myocardial infarction. Research has shown that a significant proportion of patients undergoing coronary angiography suffer from clinically relevant mental stress. The aim of this study is to investigate to what extent the psychological state of cardiology patients changes in short- and mid-term periods after coronary angiography has been performed. The study design is naturalistic, longitudinal and comparative about consecutively admitted pat

Adherence to psychiatric medications: Comparing patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression.

Findings of three articles reporting results in 1372 stabilized outpatients taking 2454 medications in Spain, Argentina, and Venezuela were combined. Prevalence of good adherence was not obviously different across diagnoses: 69.5% (N=212) for schizophrenia, 66.3% (N=142) for bipolar disorder, and 69.8% (N=521) for depression. Besides the focus on stabilized outpatients, other study biases included use of a research sample; limited to oral medications, ignoring long-acting injectable antipsychotics; and lack of data on active substance abuse, clinical severity, and insight. Logistic regression

Overlap and cumulative effects of pancreatic duct obstruction, abnormal pain processing and psychological distress on patient-reported outcomes in chronic pancreatitis.

OBJECTIVE: Several factors have been suggested to mediate pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis. However, it is unknown whether these factors are overlapping and if they have cumulative effects on patient-reported outcomes (PROs). DESIGN: We performed a multicentre cross-sectional study of 201 prospectively enrolled subjects with definitive chronic pancreatitis. All subjects underwent evaluation for pancreatic duct obstruction, abnormalities in pain processing using quantitative sensory testing, and screening for psychological distress (anxiety, depression and pain catastrophising) based

Patient Mindset and the Success of Carpal Tunnel Release.

BACKGROUND: Depression and pain catastrophizing are aspects of the patient's mindset that have been shown to be important in relation to the outcome of carpal tunnel release. However, other factors of the patient's mindset have been understudied, such as treatment expectations and illness perceptions. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of these mindset aspects on outcome of carpal tunnel release, in addition to psychological distress and pain catastrophizing. METHODS: A total of 307 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome who visited outpatient hand surgery clinics and

Efficacy and Moderators of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Psychosis Versus Other Psychological Interventions: An Individual-Participant Data Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Study-level meta-analyses have demonstrated the efficacy of cognitive-behavioural therapy for psychosis (CBTp). Limitations of conventional meta-analysis may be addressed using individual-participant-data (IPD). We aimed to determine a) whether results from IPD were consistent with study-level meta-analyses and b) whether demographic and clinical characteristics moderate treatment outcome. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, PsychInfo and CENTRAL. Authors of RCTs comparing CBTp with other psychological interventions were contacted to obtain original databases. Hier

Efficacy of psychotherapies and pharmacotherapies for Bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Bulimia nervosa (BN), a mental disorder that causes significant impairment, can be treated with psychological, pharmacological, nutrition-based and self-help interventions. We conducted a pre-registered meta-analysis of randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) to assess the efficacy of these interventions in up to 19 different interventions. METHODS: Database search terms were combined for BN and RCTs from database inception to March 2017. Abstinence from binge eating episodes, compensatory behaviors, the absence of a BN diagnosis and reduction of symptom severity were considered as pr

Depressive mood and low social support are not associated with arthritis development in patients with seropositive arthralgia, although they predict increased musculoskeletal symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Studies on the role of psychosocial vulnerability in the development of arthritis must be performed early in the disease course to exclude the reverse explanation that arthritis leads to psychological symptoms. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the longitudinal (5-year) association between depressive mood, daily stressors, avoidance coping and social support as predictors, and the development of arthritis and other clinical parameters as outcomes, in persons with seropositive arthralgia at risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: Five-year follow-up

The headache of terror: A matched cohort study of adolescents from the Utøya and the HUNT Study.

OBJECTIVE: To elaborate the risk of headache among adolescent survivors exposed to terror. METHODS: On July 22, 2011, a lone man opened gunfire, killing 69 people at a summer camp for adolescents on the Utøya islet in Norway. All 358 adolescent survivors 13 to 20 years of age were invited to participate in the Utøya interview study. Among the 213 (59%) respondents, half (49%) were male, the mean age was 17.7 years, and 13 (6%) were severely injured. For each survivor, 8 matched controls were drawn from the population-based Young-HUNT3 Study, conducted between 2006 and 2008, with a participati

Motility response to colonic distention is increased in postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS).

BACKGROUND: Acute intestinal infection leads to persistent intestinal smooth muscle hypercontractility and pain hypersensitivity after resolution of the infection in animal models. We investigated whether postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS) is associated with abnormalities in phasic contractions of the colon, smooth muscle tone, and pain sensitivity compared to non-PI-IBS (NI-IBS) or healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Two hundred and eighteen Rome III-positive IBS patients and 43 HC participated. IBS patients were designated PI-IBS, if their IBS symptoms began following an episode o

Behavioral neuroendocrinology and treatment of anorexia nervosa.

Outcome in anorexia nervosa remains poor and a new way of looking at this condition is therefore needed. To this aim, we review the effects of food restriction and starvation in humans. It is suggested that body weight remains stable and relatively low when the access to food requires a considerable amount of physical activity. In this condition, the human homeostatic phenotype, body fat content is also low and as a consequence, the synthesis and release of brain neurotransmitters are modified. As an example, the role of neuropeptide Y is analyzed in rat models of this state. It is suggested t

Symptom burden among cancer survivors: impact of age and comorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Previous research among specific cancer populations has shown high but variable symptom burden; however, very little is known about its extent and pattern among the entire population of US cancer survivors, which is more clinically relevant to primary care physicians. METHODS: To determine the prevalence of ongoing symptom burden among cancer survivors and compare it with the general population without cancer, we analyzed data from the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, which included 1,904 cancer survivors and 29,092 controls. Main outcome measures included self-reported ongo

Social and psychological resources and health outcomes after the World Trade Center disaster.

Previous studies on community disasters tend to assess non-representative samples and use nonstandard measures of well-being. Additionally, few of these studies are longitudinal in design. In this report, we examine the consequences of the World Trade Center Disaster (WTCD) within a stress model perspective to assess level of exposure to the disaster and well-being after this event, as measured by the SF12 mental health and physical health scales. Data come from a two-wave panel study of 1681 English or Spanish speaking adults living in New York City on the day of the terrorist attacks and wer

Lack of correlation between psychological factors and subclinical coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: The relation between psychological variables and clinically evident coronary artery disease has been studied extensively, although the potential mechanisms of such a relation remain speculative. We studied the relation between multiple psychological variables and subclinical coronary artery disease to assess the possible role of such variables in atherogenesis. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of 630 consecutive consenting, active-duty U.S. Army personnel, 39 to 45 years of age, without known coronary artery disease. Each participant was assessed for depression, anxiety,

Cognitive reserve and resilience as protective factors against physical health issues, anxiety and stress in older adults.

Aging is associated with physical, cognitive, and emotional changes, with substantial interindividual variability in mental and physical health outcomes. This study investigates the role of cognitive reserve (CR) and resilience as protective factors against perceived stress, anxiety, and physical health issues (PHI) in older adults. CR was operationalized using the Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire (CRIq), treated as a lifestyle-based proxy of the neural construct. A total of 108 participants (aged 65-87 years) completed standardized assessments: CRIq, Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), State-T
