Effect of visual training on the vertical vergence amplitude.

Visual training has an effect on the vertical vergence amplitudes. Three mature symptomatic patients exhibited a significant increase in the vertical vergence which compensates for the vertical heterophoria. Subjects with normal binocularity and hence no vertical heterophoria did not exhibit increased vertical vergence amplitudes after training.

Disequilibrium syndrome in Montana Hutterites.

This is a preliminary note on the occurrence of the disequilibrium syndrome (DES) in the Dariusleut Hutterites of Montana. Previously the condition was reported in the Dariusleut of Alberta by Schurig et al [1981] as an autosomal recessive, non-progressive neurological disorder with congenital hypotonia, considerable psychomotor retardation, unsteady broadly based gait and stance, increased deep tendon reflexes, and mild to moderate mental retardation. Affected individuals were short. In the Montana family studied by us in 1981, a brother and three sisters are affected.

Lack of correlation between spontaneous fasciculations and double discharges of voluntarily activated motor units.

We have studied the possible correlation between spontaneous fasciculations and double discharges or voluntarily activated motor units in myelopathies and other proximal neuropathies. Though both these phenomena are common in these diseases, they seem to have no correlation in individual muscles. It is concluded that spontaneous fasciculations and doubling of voluntarily activated motor unit potentials have different sites of origin or different mechanism. For example, if doubling reflects a disturbance of firing in the axon hillock, spontaneous fasciculations may originate in a more periphera

[Long-term treatment with L-DOPA in a case of torsion dystonia (authors transl)].

A 36-year old woman had been able to move from place to place only by crawling until 1971 after she had been treated with L-DOPA, the dose of which was increased to a maximum of 2.5 g daily. Within 4 weeks there was a diminution of her increased muscle tone and she experienced a dramatic improvement in her daily living activities, being able to walk without assistance for the first time in 20 years. This improvement has continued with a daily maintenance dose of 1.25 g. For patients with torsion dystonia, where the so-called myostatic component preponderates, cautious application of L-DOPA see

GAMT Deficiency: Clinical Presentation, Treatment, Diagnosis, Animal Models, Preclinical and Clinical Developments.

Guanidinoacetate Methyl Transferase (GAMT) deficiency is a rare disease characterized by neurodevelopmental derangements, epilepsy, and movement disorders. The condition arises from the combined effect of postnatal brain creatine (Cr) depletion and guanidinoacetate (GAA) toxicity. Consequently, current treatment relies on Cr supplementation and metabolic management to reduce GAA accumulation by limiting its synthesis through ornithine supplementation and precursor reduction. Although effective in preventing the severe GAMT phenotype, the therapy is limited in normalizing these metabolites' con…

Clinical reading-related oculomotor assessment in visual snow syndrome.

PURPOSE: Visual snow syndrome (VSS) is a complex neurological condition presenting with an array of sensory, motor, and perceptual dysfunctions and related visual and non-visual symptoms. Recent laboratory studies have found subtle, basic, saccadic-based abnormalities in this population. The objective of the present investigation was to determine if saccadic-related problems could be confirmed and extended using three common clinical reading-related eye movement tests having well-developed protocols and normative databases. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of 32 patients (ages 16-56
