Pleural effusions from 200 patients with benign or malignant pleural involvement have been cultured in vitro and observed from 48 hours to 9 months. The morphology and "social behavior" of the different types of cells are described. Mesothelial cells settle down quickly and come into contact with each other by long cytoplasmic processes. The tendency of epithelial malignant cells is to clump and grow in clusters. These "balls" of varying size are freed into the culture medium. Similar clusters may be found in benign effusions showing mesothelial hyperplasia. In case of malignant primary tumor

The role of the pathologist in breast cancer is discussed from the practical viewpoint. For primary diagnosis surgical biopsy is preferred. Of prognostic significance are the size of the tumor and the number of regional lymph nodes affected. The different histological patterns have little prognostic bearing, with the exception of some rare special types such as medullary or mucinous carcinomas. Histological and/or cytological "grading" is too time-consuming for practical purposes. The pathologist is confronted with new problems by non-palpable "minimal breast cancer" detected by mass screening

A case if reported of a 2 1/2-year-old boy with an extensive filtration of the retroperitoneum, mediastinum, and almost every organ of the body with a very primitive type of tumor identified as a poorly-differentiated mixed histiocyticlymphocytic lymphoma. The right atrium was completely filled with a large intracavitary metastasis which caused obstruction of the venous return to the heart with subsequent death.

Malignant lesions of the bladder in infancy and early childhood arise from mesenchymal tissue. Among the mesenchymal tumors embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is more common in young children than in adults. The gross appearance of rhabdomyosarcoma of the bladder is typically that of polypoid grapelike clusters of tissue, termed "sarcoma botryoides". Histologically, the lesion is consistent with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. The growths originate in the submucosal layer of the trigone and the internal urethral orifice. Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the bladder in children tends to remain within the disease.

In a series of 1,188 mediastinoscopies, six re-mediastinoscopies (0.5%) were made. The indications for repeated mediastinal exploration can be made more lenient since the adhesions between the innominate artery and the trachea need not always be extensive; if they are, an alternative paratracheal route can be used. Caution should be used, keeping possible vascular complications in mind, but we believe that an earlier mediastinoscopy does not contraindicate a repeated procedure.

In 1966, we published the case report of a patient with adrenal carcinoma and wide spread metatasis who, after treatment with mitotane (o,p-DDD) and fluorouracil, developed Addison disease accompanied by a clinical remission. The patient's unexpected death from an unrelated cause now allows us to verify what to our knowledge is the first cure of metastatic adrenal carcinoma by chemotherapy.

A new 99Tcm-labelled compound, 99Tcm-Solcocitran, has been introduced for detection of bone and brain malignancy. It is claimed to be specific for neoplastic tissue. In the present material, however, 99Tcm-Solcocitran was less sensitive in indicating metastatic bone lesions in patients than was 99Tcm-Diphosphonate or conventional radiography. Both 99Tcm compounds accumulated in fractures in dogs. 99Tcm-Solcocitran seems to offer no advantage over existing techniques in the detection of bone malignancy.
