In this paper, we present TeethGNN, a novel 3D tooth segmentation method based on graph neural networks (GNNs). Given a mesh-represented 3D dental model in non-euclidean domain, our method outputs accurate and fine-grained separation of each individual tooth robust to scanning noise, foreign matters (e.g., bubbles, dental accessories, etc.), and even severe malocclusion. Unlike previous CNN-based methods that bypass handling non-euclidean mesh data by reshaping hand-crafted geometric features into regular grids, we explore the non-uniform and irregular structure of mesh itself in its dual spac

Early diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to positively affect patients' lives. To save time and costs associated with clinical investigation, deep learning approaches have been used widely to predict MCI. This study proposes optimized deep learning models for differentiating between MCI and normal control samples. In previous studies, the hippocampus region located in the brain is used extensively to diagnose MCI. The entorhinal cortex is a promising area for diagnosing MCI since severe atrophy is observed when diagnosing the disea

Alzheimer's disease (AD) leads to irreversible cognitive decline, with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) as its prodromal stage. Early detection of AD and related dementia is crucial for timely treatment and slowing disease progression. However, classifying cognitive normal (CN), MCI, and AD subjects using machine learning models faces class imbalance, necessitating the use of balanced accuracy as a suitable metric. To enhance model performance and balanced accuracy, we introduce a novel method called VS-Opt-Net. This approach incorporates the recently developed vector-scaling (VS) loss into a m

BACKGROUND: Peripheral facial nerve palsy (PFNP) is a cranial neuropathy that occurs when the seventh facial nerve is damaged. PFNP seriously affects patients' quality of life, and approximately 30% of patients suffer from sequelae, such as unrecovered palsy, synkinesis, facial muscle contracture, and facial spasm. Many studies have confirmed the effectiveness of acupuncture for the treatment of PFNP. However, the specific mechanism remains unclear and needs to be further explored. Therefore, the purpose of this systematic review is to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying acupuncture t

Visuospatial neglect is a common, post-stroke cognitive impairment which is widely considered to be a disconnection syndrome. However, the patterns of disconnectivity associated with visuospatial neglect remain unclear. Here, we had 480 acute stroke survivors [age = 72.8 (SD = 13.3), 44.3% female, 7.5 days post-stroke (SD = 11.3)] undertake routine clinical imaging and standardised visuospatial neglect testing. The data were used to conduct voxel-wise, tract-level, and network-level lesion-mapping analyses aimed at localising the neural correlates of left and right egocentric (body-centred) an

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive subconcussive head impacts can lead to subtle neural changes and functional consequences on brain health. However, the objective assessment of these changes remains limited. Resting state blink-related oscillations (BROs), recently discovered neurological responses following spontaneous blinking, are explored in this study to evaluate changes in BRO responses in subconcussive head impacts.
METHODS: We collected 5-min resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) data from two cohorts of collegiate athletes who were engaged in contact sports (SC) or non-contact sports (HC

All societies should carefully address the child abuse and neglect phenomenon due to its acute and chronic sequelae. Even if artificial intelligence (AI) implementation in this field could be helpful, the state of the art of this implementation is not known. No studies have comprehensively reviewed the types of AI models that have been developed/validated. Furthermore, no indications about the risk of bias in these studies are available. For these reasons, the authors conducted a systematic review of the PubMed database to answer the following questions: "what is the state of the art about the

Depression is a mental disorder characterized by persistent sadness and loss of interest, which has become one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. There are currently no objective diagnostic standards for depression in clinical practice. Previous studies have shown that depression causes both brain abnormalities and behavioral disorders. In this study, both electroencephalography (EEG) and eye movement signals were used to objectively detect depression. By presenting 40 carefully selected oil paintings-20 positive and 20 negative-as stimuli, we were able to successfully evoke emotio

BACKGROUND: Compulsivity represents the performance of persistent and repetitive acts despite negative consequences and is considered one of the critical mechanisms for drug addiction. Although compulsivity-related neurocognitive impairments have been linked to addiction, it remains unclear whether these deficits might have predated drug abuse as potential familial susceptibilities.
METHODS: A large sample of 213 adult participants were recruited, including 70 abstinent individuals addicted to heroin (HAs), 69 unaffected biological siblings of the HAs (siblings), and 74 unrelated healthy cont

Neurostimulation is a mainstream treatment option for major depression. Neuromodulation techniques apply repetitive magnetic or electrical stimulation to some neural target but significantly differ in their invasiveness, spatial selectivity, mechanism of action, and efficacy. Despite these differences, recent analyses of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS)-treated individuals converged on a common neural network that might have a causal role in treatment response. We set out to investigate if the neuronal underpinnings of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are

Previous research has suggested that fear of flying, which is defined as a situational, specific phobia, could overlap with depressive and anxiety disorders. Whether the neuronal dysfunctions including altered serotonergic activity in the brain and altered neural oscillations observed for depressive and anxiety disorders also overlap with alterations in fear of flying is unclear. Here, thirty-six participants with self-reported fear of flying (FF) and forty-one unaffected participants (NFF) were recruited. The participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the State-trait Anxie

This research proposes a 'temporal attention' addition for long-short term memory (LSTM) models for dengue prediction. The number of monthly dengue cases was collected for each of five Malaysian states i.e. Selangor, Kelantan, Johor, Pulau Pinang, and Melaka from 2011 to 2016. Climatic, demographic, geographic and temporal attributes were used as covariates. The proposed LSTM models with temporal attention was compared with several benchmark models including a linear support vector machine (LSVM), a radial basis function support vector machine (RBFSVM), a decision tree (DT), a shallow neural n

Visual working memory refers to the temporary maintenance and manipulation of task-related visual information. Recent debate on the underlying neural substrates of visual working memory has focused on the delay period of relevant tasks. Persistent neural activity throughout the delay period has been recognized as a correlate of working memory, yet regions demonstrating sustained hemodynamic responses show inconsistency across individual studies. To develop a more precise understanding of delay-period activations during visual working memory, we conducted a coordinate-based meta-analysis on 30

At present, there is a phenomenon of network data packet loss in the trajectory tracking control system, which will degrade or even destabilize the system's performance. Therefore, this work first explains the theory of the deep long-short term memory (LSTM) neural network model, the kinematic model of mobile robots, and the trajectory tracking error model. The reasons for data packet loss in the control system are analyzed. Second, a prediction model based on the LSTM network is designed according to the theory mentioned above. Finally, the training effect of the LSTM model and the robot traj

Chronic pain associated with fibromyalgia (FM) affects a large portion of the population but the underlying mechanisms leading to this altered pain are still poorly understood. Evidence suggests that FM involves altered neural processes in the central nervous system and neuroimaging methods such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are used to reveal these underlying alterations. While many fMRI studies of FM have been conducted in the brain, recent evidence shows that the changes in pain processing in FM may be linked to autonomic and homeostatic dysregulation, thus requiring furth

BACKGROUND: The estimation of total iron content at the regional scale is of much significance as iron deficiency has become a routine problem for many crops.
METHODS: In this study, a novel method for estimating total iron content in soil (TICS) was proposed using harmonic analysis (HA) and back propagation (BP) neural network model. Several data preprocessing methods of first derivative (FD), wavelet packet transform (WPT), and HA were conducted to improve the correlation between the soil spectra and TICS. The principal component analysis (PCA) was exploited to obtained three kinds of chara

Neuromodulators, such as neuropeptides, can regulate and reconfigure neural circuits to alter their output, affecting in this way animal physiology and behavior. The interplay between the activity of neuronal circuits, their modulation by neuropeptides, and the resulting behavior, is still poorly understood. Here, we present a quantitative framework to study the relationships between the temporal pattern of activity of peptidergic neurons and of motoneurons during Drosophila ecdysis behavior, a highly stereotyped motor sequence that is critical for insect growth. We analyzed, in the time and f

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is often accompanied with classic diurnal mood variation (DMV) symptoms. Patients with DMV symptoms feel a mood improvement and prefer activities at dusk or in the evening, which is consistent with the evening chronotype. Their neural alterations are unclear. In this study, we aimed to explore the neuropathological mechanisms underlying the circadian rhythm of mood and the association with chronotype in MDD.
METHODS: A total of 126 depressed patients, including 48 with DMV, 78 without, and 67 age/gender-matched healthy controls (HC) were recruited a

Acute pharmacological inhibition of the anandamide-degrading enzyme, fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), prolongs the regulatory effects of endocannabinoids and reverses the stress-induced anxiety state in a cannabinoid receptor-dependent manner. However, the neural systems underlying this modulation are poorly understood. A single site, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel study was conducted with 43 subjects assigned to receive once daily dosing of either placebo (n = 21) or JNJ-42165279 (100 mg) (n = 22) for 4 consecutive days. Despite common use of antidepressants to treat postpartum depression, little is known about the impact of antidepressant use on postpartum brain activity. Additionally, although oxytocin has been investigated as a potential treatment for postpartum depression, the interaction between antidepressants and exogenous oxytocin on brain activity is unknown. We explored postpartum depressed women's neural activation in areas identified as important to emotion and reward processing and potentially, antidepressant response: the amygdala, nucleus accumbens and ventral tegmental area.
