Construction of a Viscoelastic Model of Human Cancellous Bone in Alveolar Bone Based on Bone Mineral Density Distribution.

Orthodontic treatment was accompanied by the remodeling of cancellous bone in alveolar bone (CBAB), which manifested as the increase or decrease in bone mineral density (BMD). BMD is closely related to the mechanical properties of the alveolar bone. Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantify the effect of BMD on its viscoelastic behavior and to assess orthodontic forces at different BMDs. A total of nine CBAB samples were cut from the cervical, middle, and apical regions of the right mandible between canine, premolars, and molars. After scanning with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT).

Improved super-elastic Ti-Ni alloy wire for treating adult skeletal class III with facial asymmetry: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Correcting severe skeletal class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry in adults through orthodontic treatment alone is difficult. CASE SUMMARY: In this case report, we describe orthodontic treatment and lower incisor extraction without orthognathic surgery for a 27-year-old man with a transverse discrepancy. The extraction sites were closed using an elastic chain. The use of intermaxillary elastics, improved super-elastic Ti-Ni alloy wire, and unilateral multibend edgewise arch wire was crucial for correcting facial asymmetry and the midline deviation. CONCLUSION: After treatme

Effectiveness of Invisalign® aligners in the treatment of severe gingival recession: A case report.

In this report, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the InvisalignⓇ system in the treatment of severe gingival recession and bone dehiscence through torque, translation, and intrusion movements in a young woman. Cone-beam computed tomography was used to assess bone parameters and check the teeth during treatment. The root of the mandibular right central incisor, which was buccally positioned and exhibited bone dehiscence of 9.4 mm, was moved toward the center of the alveolar process by using the InvisalignⓇ system and SmartForceⓇ features. The patient was monitored by a periodontist throughout

Essential Attributes of Clear Aligner Therapy in terms of Appliance Configuration, Hygiene, and Pain Levels during the Pandemic: A Brief Review.

Fixed orthodontic treatment has been compromised at many levels during the pandemic period, as clinics underwent a prolonged lockdown and patients could not be treated regularly. With the end of the pandemic nowhere in sight, may be it is time to put newer tools, such as clear aligner therapy, for better use. Fixed orthodontic appliances by nature are not always self-limiting, which, if left unmonitored over a long period may cause undesirable side effects, pain, and discomfort. The undesired tooth movements that may occur with arch wire-guided mechanics in addition to problems with cut wires

Mandibular incisor extraction: A treatment alternative for large maxillary midline diastema.

Maxillary midline diastema is a common aesthetic concern of dental patients. Various treatment modalities have been employed to close diastemas. This case report describes an unusual orthodontic treatment approach for a 25-year-old African American female patient with a large maxillary midline diastema of 5mm, bialveolar dental protrusion and unilateral Class III malocclusion. The treatment included one mandibular incisor extraction, followed by retraction of the incisors. At the end of the 16-month active treatment period, favourable aesthetic and occlusal outcomes were attained. Closure of m

Esthetic lip repositioning: A cosmetic approach for correction of gummy smile - A case series.

Gummy smile has been a prevalent esthetic disorder commonly affecting younger individuals due to various causes such as skeletal, dento-alveolar, or soft-tissue origin. It can be due to jaw deformities, altered passive eruption, or tooth malpositioning. Usually, the corrective measures incorporate orthognathic surgery and orthodontic treatment. Orthognathic surgery results in significant morbidity and hospitalization. Lip repositioning can be employed as an alternative cosmetic treatment modality for the correction of an excessive gingival display with minimal risk or side effects. Although th

[Optimization of the final lingual occlusion: an analysis].

INTRODUCTION: The objectives of orthodontic treatment are to achieve a functional, aesthetic and sustainable occlusion. However, its analysis is often limited to the study of its buccal side, easy to check in mouth. Yet, the lingual occlusion is also of paramount importance. MATERIAL AND METHOD: After calling to mind the ideal static objectives of treatment, described by some authors and defined by some scientific societies, this article studies the different supports for the analysis of lingual static occlusion and proposes a new protocol for the carving of orthodontic casts. RESULTS: The l

Connective Tissue Graft for Gingival Recession in Mandibular Incisor Area: A Case Report.

We report a case of gingival recession in the mandibular incisor region requiring a connective tissue graft. The patient was a 17-year-old girl who visited the Tokyo Dental College Chiba Hospital in 2014 with the chief complaint of gingival recession in the lower incisor region. She had received orthodontic treatment for 5 years and noticed the gingival recession on completion of active orthodontic treatment in 2013. Gingival recession in tooth #31 extended 3 mm beyond the muco-gingival junction (MGJ) and was clinically diagnosed as Miller Class II recession; probing depth was 6 mm. Following

Adhesion of human periodontal ligament cells by three-dimensional culture to the sterilized root surface of extracted human teeth.

Residual periodontal ligament (PDL) and cement mass on the roots of extracted teeth are factors that considerably affect tooth transplantation. Therefore, when normal extracted teeth are used for autologous transplantation, it is necessary to regenerate the PDL of the root surface. Here we describe a method to examine human PDL cell adhesion on sterilized root surfaces. Sample teeth were extracted during orthodontic treatment. PDL cells were obtained from healthy periodontal tissue explants from teeth extracted for orthodontic reasons. We developed a method for adhering PDL cells to sterile ro

A five-year follow-up of a root fracture in a ten-year-old boy.

The management of horizontal root fracture still presents a challenge to clinicians. The case of a 10-year-old boy with a horizontal root fracture in the left maxillary central incisor (tooth number 21) is described here. The fracture was present at the junction of the apical and the middle thirds. We report both the emergency care and the 5-year follow-up. At the same time, an orthodontic treatment was planned for a retained maxillary cuspid (tooth number 23), first composed of a high-pull headgear and then by a fixed multi-bracket appliance. Today, the tooth number 21 remains vital and sympt

Impacted Teeth: An Interdisciplinary Perspective.

A tooth normally erupts when half to three-quarters of its final root length has developed. Tooth impaction is usually diagnosed well after this period and is generally asymptomatic. It is principally for this reason that patients seek treatment later than optimal. Tooth impaction is a common problem in daily orthodontic practice and, in most cases, it is recognized by chance in a routine dental examination. Therefore, it is very important that dental practitioners are aware of this condition, since early detection and intervention may help to prevent many harmful complications. The treatment

Timely relocation of subapically impacted maxillary canines and replacement of an ankylosed mandibular molar are the keys to eruption disturbances in a prepubertal patient.

Eruption disturbances such as impaction and ankylosis complicate orthodontic treatment because soft-tissue and hard-tissue considerations must be taken into account. Treatment is further complicated when such eruption disturbances occur in a growing patient. Extraction of impacted or ankylosed teeth can be an option that carries the weight of additional prostheses and bony defects, whereas exposure or luxation followed by orthodontic traction can preserve the patient's teeth and bony structure with improved esthetics. Therefore, an accurate diagnosis is needed in establishing an efficient and

Early treatment of an ectopic premolar to prevent molar-premolar transposition.

Orthodontic treatment is planned on an individual, case-by-case basis after thoroughly considering the patient's overall facial and dental characteristics, the expected duration of treatment, costs, patient preferences, and the orthodontist's experience. This article reports the treatment of a patient with a maxillary premolar-molar transposition in the permanent dentition that was successfully managed with orthodontic treatment. A girl, aged 10 years 2 months, came for treatment with an ectopic maxillary left premolar. Radiographic analysis indicated a developing complete transposition of the

Prosthodontic considerations in the implant-supported all-ceramic restoration of congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisor: a clinical report.

The congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisor is the most common agenesis in the anterior region. There are several treatment options for this anomaly, which causes severe deficiencies: orthodontic space closure, tooth-supported restoration, or single-tooth implant. Each of these solutions has a high degree of success if used in the correct situation. An implant-supported restoration with an interdisciplinary approach provides a predictable outcome. This article describes the treatment of a patient with agenesis of the maxillary left lateral incisor. After orthodontic space management, it

Multidisciplinary management of a fractured premolar: a case report with followup.

The general dental practitioner must consider orthodontic extrusion of a tooth when a subgingival defect, such as, crown fracture occurs before prosthetic rehabilitation, especially in the aesthetic zone. Extrusion enables the root portion to be elevated which exposes sound tooth structure for placement of restorative margins. This case report describes the multidisciplinary management of a fractured upper first premolar in a general dental practice. The forced orthodontic eruption is achieved by an endodontic attachment and sectional fixed appliance with an offset placed in the wire. The abil

Allergic contact dermatitis associated with the use of facemask on a patient with a history of atopy.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a skin inflammation caused by an allergic reaction after contact with small external substances capable of being absorbed by the skin. There are several studies describing allergic reactions to intraoral orthodontic appliances, especially those containing nickel. Allergic reactions due to extraoral appliances are not as frequent, and there are relatively few studies about them. Extraoral eactions are attributed to metallic, elastic, or textile parts of the extraoral appliances. This article's purpose was to report the appearance of an allergic contact derma
