OBJECTIVES: Glutamine is an important fuel for intestinal mucosal epithelial cells, and it promotes intestinal mucosal cell differentiation and proliferation. Most liver transplantation (LT) patients suffer from intestinal barrier dysfunction. Whether enteral glutamine supplementation has beneficial effects on intestinal barrier function following LT is not known. We investigated the effect of glutamine (Gln) supplementation on NF-κB and on the intestinal barrier in rats after an allogenic LT with concomitant immunosuppressive therapy.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is a highly virulent opportunistic pathogen and a leading cause of nosocomial infections. Affected patients are often hospitalized in an intensive care unit, and are immuno-compromised as a result of disease and treatment. Suspected P. aeruginosa require timely, adequate and empirical antibiotic therapy to ensure improved outcomes. We report the elucidation of a mechanism of apoptosis induction in breast cancer (MCF-7) cells by an L-amino acid oxidase (LAAO), Rusvinoxidase, purified from the venom of Daboia russelii russelii. Peptide mass fingerprinting analysis of Rusvinoxidase, an acidic monomeric glycoprotein with a mass of ~57 kDa, confirmed its identity as snake venom LAAO. Primary tooth emergence in Pakistani children was investigated as a part of a prospective interdisciplinary study of growth and development. The average order of emergence of the primary teeth was in agreement with previous studies from other countries. There was no sex difference in emergence of individual primary teeth. The emergence of the primary incisors and mandibular first molars in both sexes, and the canines in boys were significantly delayed compared to Swedish standards (Hägg & Taranger 1986).
