The objectives of this study were to compare the persistence of deposited metals and the inflammatory potential of stainless and mild steel welding fumes, the two most common fumes used in US industry. A quiescent single-component gravity-free gas subject to a small steady uniform temperature gradient T, despite being at rest, is shown to experience a drift velocity UD=-D* gradient ln T, where D* is the gas's nonisothermal self-diffusion coefficient. For low-velocity impacts into granular materials, most of the impact energy is absorbed by the soil and not transferred into the ejected material. That raises the question of how large the volume of material is that is actually affected by the impact, that is, by subsurface material displacement or compaction. As the basic structural units of soil, soil aggregates play an important role in the migration and transformation of heavy metal. However, there are few studies on the effects of adding amendments on Cd distribution in soil aggregates in alkaline soils.
