Comparison of delivery catheter-based and stylet-based right ventricular lead placement at the right ventricular septum under fluoroscopic guidance judged by cardiac CT (Mt. FUJI): a study protocol for the Mt. FUJI randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Pacing-induced cardiomyopathy occasionally occurs in patients undergoing pacemaker implantation. Although compared with right ventricular (RV) apical pacing, RV septal pacing can attenuate left ventricular dyssynchrony; the success rate of lead placement on the RV septum using the stylet system is low. Additionally, no randomised controlled trial has addressed the issue regarding the accuracy of RV lead placement on the RV septum using the stylet and delivery catheter systems. This study hypothesises that a newly available delivery catheter system can improve the accuracy of RV l

BCG vaccination to reduce the impact of COVID-19 in healthcare workers: Protocol for a randomised controlled trial (BRACE trial).

INTRODUCTION: BCG vaccination modulates immune responses to unrelated pathogens. This off-target effect could reduce the impact of emerging pathogens. As a readily available, inexpensive intervention that has a well-established safety profile, BCG is a good candidate for protecting healthcare workers (HCWs) and other vulnerable groups against COVID-19. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This international multicentre phase III randomised controlled trial aims to determine if BCG vaccination reduces the incidence of symptomatic and severe COVID-19 at 6 months (co-primary outcomes) compared with no BCG vacc

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation alone and in combination with motor control exercise for the treatment of individuals with chronic non-specific low back pain (ExTraStim trial): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: While multiple pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions treating chronic non-specific low back pain (CLBP) are available, they have been shown to produce at best modest effects. Interventions such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a form of non-invasive brain stimulation, have exhibited promising results to alleviate chronic pain. However, evidence on the effectiveness of rTMS for CLBP is scarce due to limited rigorous clinical trials. Combining rTMS with motor control exercises (MCE) may help to address both central and nociceptive factors cont

Supporting Equity and Inclusion of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals in Professional Organizations.

Disability is an important and often overlooked component of diversity. Individuals with disabilities bring a rare perspective to science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) because of their unique experiences approaching complex issues related to health and disability, navigating the healthcare system, creatively solving problems unfamiliar to many individuals without disabilities, managing time and resources that are limited by physical or mental constraints, and advocating for themselves and others in the disabled community. Yet, individuals with disabilities are und

Auditory evoked potentials in children and adolescents with multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: In children, an acute demyelinating disease may evolve as a multiphasic disease with multiple relapses, such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). The Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEP) and Long-Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials (LLAEP) contribute to the identification of either retrocochlear changes or other central auditory nervous system (CANS) changes. OBJECTIVES: To characterize BAEP and LLAEP in children and adolescents with MS and NMOSD and verify the diagnostic values of these potentials in each of the demyelinating diseas

Association of patient weight status with plasma surfactant protein D, a biomarker of alveolar epithelial injury, in children with acute respiratory failure.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Alveolar epithelial injury is a key determinant of acute respiratory failure (ARF) severity. Plasma surfactant protein D (SP-D), a biomarker of alveolar epithelial injury, is lower in obese adults with ARF compared to their lean peers. We aimed to determine if children with ARF have similar variance in plasma SP-D associated with their weight status on admission. METHODS: Plasma SP-D was measured on days 0, 1, or 2 in children (1-18 years) with ARF enrolled in the genetic variation and biomarkers in children with acute lung injury and RESTORE studies. Rotator cuff unloading versus loading exercise program in the conservative treatment of patients with rotator cuff tear: protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Atraumatic and degenerative rotator cuff tears are common in individuals over 55 years of age. This condition can have a high impact on social life and is associated with chronic pain, weakness and dysfunction of the upper limb. There is evidence that conservative approaches should be the first treatment option. Conservative treatment usually addresses a variety of therapeutic behaviours without providing scientific arguments for the choice and progression of exercises. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of two different exercise programmes based on the load of the rotator cuff o

Working Memory and Linguistic Performance of Dual Language Learners With and Without Developmental Language Disorders.

Purpose This research note describes the use of working memory measures as potential indicators of developmental language disorders (DLD) in preschool-age dual language learners from Spanish-speaking backgrounds. This report is an extension of early work, completed by the same authors that described the diagnostic accuracy of a Spanish nonword repetition task. Method One hundred thirty Spanish-speaking families with preschool-age children participated; 37 children had DLD, and 93 were typically developing. Families were recruited from early childhood programs in three states in the western reg

Non-HIV chronic disease burden among transgender populations globally: A systematic review and narrative synthesis.

Chronic disease is a growing concern for research, policy and clinical care. While the global burden of HIV for transgender populations has been comprehensively covered in recent systematic reviews, the same is not true for the burden of other chronic disease. The objective of this study was to review the literature on non-HIV chronic disease burden for transgender populations worldwide. A systematic review was conducted of Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO and LGBT Life bibliographic databases for peer-reviewed scientific studies with non-HIV chronic disease prevalence data for transgender po

Exploring effects of single-session anodal tDCS over the inferior frontal gyrus on responses to food cues and food cravings among highly disinhibited restrained eaters: A preliminary study.

According to the hedonic-inhibitory model, overeating occurs when active inhibitory capacities mediated by the prefrontal areas are overridden by hedonic-eating motivation mediated by the mesolimbic reward system. The inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) has a crucial role in inhibiting hedonic-cues response yet transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) studies have emphasized the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), to the neglect of other executive network regions including the IFG. Therefore, we investigated modulating effects of single session tDCS over the right IFG on behavior response i

Visual working memory deficits in undergraduates with a history of mild traumatic brain injury.

We investigated whether a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), or concussion, has any effect on visual working memory (WM) performance. In most cases, cognitive performance is thought to return to premorbid levels soon after injury, without further medical intervention. We tested this assumption in undergraduates, among whom a history of mTBI is prevalent. Notably, participants with a history of mTBI performed worse than their colleagues with no such history. Experiment 1 was based on a change detection paradigm in which we manipulated visual WM set size from one to three items, whic

Relating the number of human leucocytes antigen mismatches to pregnancy complications in oocyte donation pregnancies: study protocol for a prospective multicentre cohort study (DONOR study).

INTRODUCTION: Oocyte donation (OD) enables women with reproductive failure to conceive. Compared with naturally conceived (NC) and in vitrofertilisation (IVF) pregnancies, OD pregnancies are associated with a higher risk of pregnancy complications. The allogeneic nature of the fetus in OD pregnancies possibly plays a role in the development of these complications. The objective of the current study is therefore to study the number and nature of human leucocyte antigen (HLA) mismatches between fetus and mother and its association with the development of hypertensive pregnancy complications. Reduced white matter fractional anisotropy mediates cortical thickening in adults born preterm with very low birthweight.

Development of the cerebral cortex may be affected by aberrant white matter development. Preterm birth with very low birth weight (VLBW) has been associated with reduced fractional anisotropy of white matter and changes in cortical thickness and surface area. We use a new methodological approach to combine white and gray matter data and test the hypothesis that white matter injury is primary, and acts as a mediating factor for concomitant gray matter aberrations, in the developing VLBW brain. T1 and dMRI data were obtained from 47 young adults born preterm with VLBW and 73 term-born peers (mea

A 3D navigation template for guiding a unilateral lumbar pedicle screw with contralateral translaminar facet screw fixation: a study protocol for multicentre randomised controlled trials.

IntroductionThe incidence of lumbar disc degeneration disease has increased in recent years. Lumbar interbody fusion using two unilateral pedicle screws and a translaminar facet screw fixation has advantages of minimal invasiveness and lower costs compared with the traditional methods. Moreover, a method guided by a three-dimensional (3D) navigation template may help us improve the surgical accuracy and the success rate. This is the first randomised study using a 3D navigation template to guide a unilateral lumbar pedicle screw with contralateral translaminar facet screw fixation. Methods and a

Self-reported minor infections in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) often report opportunistic infections such as herpes and urinary tract infections. AIM: To compare opportunistic infections in patients with HS against a group of healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: In total, 99 patients with HS and 109 HCs were recruited at random to this retrospective case-control study. We devised a questionnaire to explore the frequency of minor infections, general practitioner (GP) visits and sick days experienced during the past 6 months. Additionally, participants were asked if they felt unwell more often compared w
