Perceptions of cervical cancer risk and screening among transmasculine individuals: patient and provider perspectives.

Transmasculine people (individuals assigned a female sex at birth who identify as male or masculine) are at risk of cervical cancer. Despite low rates of Pap test use in this population, research examining the determinants of cervical cancer screening among transmasculine individuals is scarce. We conducted in-depth interviews and focus groups with 49 participants (32 transmasculine patients and 17 healthcare providers) in order to examine transmasculine individuals' and healthcare providers' perceptions of cervical cancer risk and screening among individuals on the transmasculine continuum. O

Changes in quality of life shortly after routine cataract surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To perform a pilot study to explore use of a generic patient-reported outcome measure to assess patient-perceived improvements in quality of life within 2-4 weeks of routine cataract surgery and to explore differences after first or second eye surgery. Secondary analysis explored effects of gender and ethnicity. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. PARTICIPANTS: Consecutive patients attending a weekly nurse-led postoperative clinic. METHODS: The Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI), a validated, postinterventional questionnaire (not specific to one particular medical or surgical i

Personality Structure Among Centenarians: The Georgia Centenarian Study.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND/STUDY CONTEXT: We demonstrate that observer-rated factor structure of personality in centenarians is congruent with the normative structure. Prevalence of cognitive impairment, which has previously been linked to changes in personality in younger samples, is high in this age group, requiring observer ratings to obtain valid data in a population-based context. Likewise, the broad range of cognitive functioning necessitates synthesis of results across multiple measures of cognitive performance. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data from 161 participants in the Georgia Centenarian Stu

An investigation of the factor structure of the beck depression inventory-II in anorexia nervosa.

Symptoms of depression frequently co-occur with eating disorders and have been associated with negative outcomes. Self-report measures such as the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) are commonly used to assess for the presence of depressive symptoms in eating disorders, but the instrument's factor structure in this population has not been examined. The purposes of this study were to explore the factor structure of the BDI-II in a sample of individuals (N = 437) with anorexia nervosa undergoing inpatient treatment and to examine changes in depressive symptoms on each of the identified factor

Unfiltered Administration of the YMRS and CDRS-R in a Clinical Sample of Children.

The objective of this study is to evaluate discriminative validity of the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised (CDRS-R) in a clinical sample of children when administered in an unfiltered manner (i.e., regardless of whether symptoms occur in a mood episode). The Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia is the gold standard for assessing psychiatric disorders in children and was used to make diagnoses in this study. Using a sample of 707 treatment-seeking youth (ages 6-12 years, Mage = 9.7 years, 67.6% male), receiver operating curve an

"I love you more than I can stand!" - romantic love, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and sleep complaints are related among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Falling in love is a universal human behavior. Studies indicate that both adolescents and adults experience romantic love (RL) and emotional states of joy and happiness. However, there is evidence that among adolescents RL is also associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety, but no data on these associations are available for adults. The aim of the present study was therefore to explore the associations between RL, symptoms of depression, anxiety, hypomania, and sleep among a sample of Iranian adults. METHODS: One hundred adults (mean age: 26 years; 53% males) took part in

Children's memory and suggestibility about a distressing event: the role of children's and parents' attachment.

Our goal was to identify individual difference predictors of children's memory and suggestibility for distressing personally experienced events. Specifically, we examined children's and parents' attachment orientations and children's observable levels of distress, as well as other individual difference factors, as predictors of children's memory and suggestibility. Children (N=91) aged 3 to 6years were interviewed about inoculations received at medical clinics. For children whose parents scored as more avoidant, higher distress levels during the inoculations predicted less accuracy, whereas fo

Gender inequality at home is associated with poorer health for women.

BACKGROUND: As more women have joined the work force, the difference in employment rate between men and women has decreased, in Sweden as well as many other countries. Despite this, traditional gender patterns regarding, for example, responsibility for household duties still remain. Women are on sick leave more often than men, and previous studies have indicated that an unequal split of household responsibilities and perceived gender inequality could be associated with negative health outcomes. AIMS: The aim of the present study was to explore whether an unequal distribution of responsibiliti

Restricted and repetitive behaviors in toddlers and preschoolers with autism spectrum disorders based on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS).

Restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) observed during the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule [ADOS: Lord et al., 2000] were examined in a longitudinal data set of 455 toddlers and preschoolers (age 8-56 months) with clinical diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD; autism, n=121 and pervasive developmental disorders-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), n=71), a nonspectrum disorder (NS; n=90), or typical development (TD; n=173). Even in the relatively brief semi-structured observations, GEE analyses of the severity and prevalence of RRBs differentiated children with ASD from those w

[Operationalized psychodynamic diagnostics (OPD) in patients in a prodromal state of schizophrenia--an explorative study].

OBJECTIVES: To obtain data and hypotheses regarding the amelioration of risk estimation and preventive psychotherapy in patients in a prodromal state of schizophrenia by using OPD. METHODS: 20 participants with a prodromal condition--6 subjects far from psychosis and 14 close to psychosis--along with 10 patients with paranoid schizophrenia as reference group were examined using the first four OPD axes. RESULTS: Both groups differed considerably in all four axes. Compared to the schizophrenic participants, prodromal probands appear to have more favourable preconditions for therapy. Moreover,

Comparing the psychometric properties of multiple teacher report instruments as predictors of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents.

The psychometric properties of four teacher report measures and their utility for accurate diagnosis of pediatric bipolar spectrum disorders (BPSDs) were examined. Participants were 191 youth (65% male; 62% African-American; 23% diagnosed with a BPSD), age 5-18 (M=10.16, SD=3.27) years, 70% recruited from a community mental health center and 30% recruited from a mood disorders clinic. Teachers "who knew the child best" were asked to complete the Achenbach Teacher Report Form (TRF) as well as teacher versions of the General Behavior Inventory (T-GBI), the Child Mania Rating Scale (CMRS-T), and

A pilot study of clonazepam versus psychodynamic group therapy plus clonazepam in the treatment of generalized social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Both psychodynamic group therapy (PGT) and clonazepam are used as treatment strategies in reducing symptoms of generalized social anxiety disorder (GSAD). However, many individuals remain symptomatic after treatment with PGT or clonazepam. METHOD: Fifty-eight adult outpatients with a diagnosis of GSAD according to DSM-IV were randomized to 12 weeks PGT plus clonazepam or clonazepam. The Clinical Global Impression-Improvement (CGI-I) Scale was the primary efficacy measure. Secondary efficacy measures included the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) total score, the World Health O

Taxometric investigation of the latent structure of nicotine dependence: an epidemiological sample.

A considerable number of daily tobacco users do not fulfill the DSM-IV and ICD-10 diagnostic criteria for nicotine dependence (ND). This suggests that such a diagnostic boundary may be arbitrary. This paper addresses this question empirically by comparing the viability of two models, respectively hypothesizing a dimensional and a categorical latent structure of ND. An epidemiological sample of 6,926 individuals was selected from a cross-sectional probabilistic stratified sampling design. All participants having smoked in the past 30 days were included in the study. Half of this sample was used

Schedule for affective disorders and schizophrenia for school-age children (K-SADS-PL) for the assessment of preschool children--a preliminary psychometric study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the psychometrics of the schedule for affective disorders and schizophrenia for school-age children present and lifetime version (K-SADS-PL) in diagnosing DSM-IV psychiatric disorders and subsyndromal symptomatology in preschool children. METHOD: Parents were interviewed about their children using the K-SADS-PL, and they completed the early childhood inventory-4 (ECI-4) and child behavior checklist for ages 1(1/2)-5 years (CBCL). Discriminant, divergent, and convergent validity of the K-SADS-PL were evaluated in 204 offspring ages 2-5 years old of parents from an ongoing

True and false recall and dissociation among maltreated children: the role of self-schema.

The current investigation addresses the manner through which trauma affects basic memory and self-system processes. True and false recall for self-referent stimuli were assessed in conjunction with dissociative symptomatology among abused (N=76), neglected (N=92), and nonmaltreated (N=116) school-aged children. Abused, neglected, and nonmaltreated children did not differ in the level of processing self-schema effect or in the occurrence and frequency of false recall. Rather, differences in the affective valence of false recall emerged as a function of maltreatment subtype and age. Regarding di

What symptoms predict the diagnosis of mania in persons with severe/profound intellectual disability in clinical practice?

BACKGROUND: While researchers have attempted to address the difficulties of diagnosing affective disorders in the intellectually disabled population, diagnosing bipolar disorder in an individual with severe intellectual disability (ID) remains a challenge. The aim of this study was to identify what symptoms can predict a diagnosis of mania in the intellectually disabled population. METHODS: Three groups of persons with ID participated in this study: (1) individuals with a bipolar diagnosis who were currently manic; (2) individuals with an Axis I diagnosis other than bipolar disorder; and (3)

Circumstances of service and gender differences in war-related PTSD: findings from the National Vietnam Veteran Readjustment Study.

Data from the National Vietnam Veteran Readjustment Study (NVVRS) revealed a prevalence of current posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in female Vietnam Theater veterans half the size of the prevalence in their male counterparts. This stands in contrast to the elevated prevalence of PTSD in women obtained in general population surveys. This study undertakes further analyses of gender differences in the NVVRS and how these differences might be specified by the amount and type of exposure to war-zone stress. The findings indicate that male elevations in PTSD are limited to men who served under
