An emergency doctor became infected with group A streptococci during resuscitation and developed necrotizing fasciitis (NF) on his arm and thorax. The patient could be cured by antibiotic treatment and several operations. This case aims to increase the awareness for the risk of NF for medical personnel and makes an appeal to personnel involved in emergencies to consider the relevance of personal protective equipment.

A 5-year follow-up study found declining disease development rates from latent tuberculosis infection. In the latter 3 years, the incidence, per 100 person-years, was 0.26 for interferon-γ release assay positives and 0.19 for tuberculin skin test positives (P = .28). Stepwise multiple logistic regression was used in an attempt to develop a statistical model which would predict "recovery" in a group of 1471 depressives admitted to a tertiary care hospital. Six variables identified by this approach included: Electroconvulsive therapy, personality disorder, chronicity, anxiety disorder, organic mental disorder, and dysthymia. The meaning and significance of the findings are discussed.

Based on personal experience and illustrated by selected case reports, the author gives an account of the modern development of surgical techniques used for the treatment of uterine causes of sterility and infertility. Three main groups of pathology of the uterine body are dealt with: uterine myoma, malformations and the Asherman syndrome. Advances in the surgical methods and instrumentation are discussed in the light of improving success rates.

The value of hip joint sonography in newborns and unweaned infants is the latest development in the diagnosis of hip dysplasia. Knowledge of the sonographic anatomy makes accurate examination and staging according to Graf's tables possible. Since sonography is non-invasive it can be used for screening and check-up, thus reducing the use of radiography. A personal series of 250 patients is presented.

Prevalence and impact of comorbidity in early onset major depressive disorder were studied in 116 depressed adult outpatients whose onset of first major depressive episode occurred by age 18. Eighty-eight percent of these patients had at least one additional comorbid Axis I lifetime diagnosis including: social phobia (28%), simple phobia (16%), alcohol (17%) and cannabis (13%) abuse/dependence, and bulimia nervosa (8%). This paper examines the life history of a small group of adolescents (3%) who were identified during the course of a longitudinal study of a birth cohort of New Zealand children as displaying multiple problem behaviours at the age of 15 years.
