7-12 Hz high-voltage rhythmic spike discharges in rats evaluated by antiepileptic drugs and flicker stimulation.

Paroxysmal 7- to 12-Hz high-voltage rhythmic spike (HVRS) or spike-wave discharges often appear in several particular strains of rats. However, functional hypotheses of these 7-12 Hz high-voltage cortical oscillations (absence seizure vs. idling mu rhythm) are inconclusive. The mu rhythm can be provoked by flicker stimulation (FS) in most people, but FS is less effective at eliciting absence epileptic activity. Therefore FS and antiepileptic drugs were used to verify the role of HVRS activity in Long-Evans rats with spontaneous HVRS discharges and Wistar rats without spontaneous HVRS discharge

Improving antisaccade performance in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The goal of the study was to examine the effects of task manipulations on antisaccade accuracy and response times (RTs) of adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), age-matched controls, 10-year-olds and young adults. Order effects were tested by administering the task at the beginning and end of the session. Other manipulations involved a visual landmark to reduce demands on working memory and internal generation of saccades; spatially specific and non-specific cues at three intervals; and central engagement of attention through perceptual and cognitive means at three

In vivo visualization of vascular leakage in photochemically induced cortical infarction.

The photothrombotic model for stroke was originally described as a focal cortical infarction resulting from occlusive thrombosis. However, subsequent studies have shown evidence for extravasation of water and proteins using ex vivo techniques. The aim of the present study was to determine the role of vascular leakage in the pathophysiology of photochemically induced infarction in vivo. At several times points after infarct induction, analysis of blood flow and vascular leakage was performed using intravital microscopy and fluorescent labelling of blood plasma. In the first hour following infar

Preserved prism adaptation in bilateral optic ataxia: strategic versus adaptive reaction to prisms.

To date the anatomical substrate(s) of prism adaptation remain(s) particularly debated, with two main candidates emerging from the literature: the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and the cerebellum. The functional processes involved in the acquisition of the adaptive aftereffects also remain largely unknown. The main result shown here is that a patient with a bilateral optic ataxia can adapt to an optical deviation, which allows us to make a step forward on these two issues. First, it demonstrates that the corresponding part of the PPC is not a necessary substrate for prism adaptation. Second,

Convergent and divergent effects of neck proprioceptive and visual motion stimulation on visual space processing in neglect.

Visual motion stimulation as well as neck muscle vibration are known to effectively modulate the subjective body orientation in spatial neglect. However, so far only motion stimulation has been demonstrated to substantially influence size and space distortion in neglect patients. The present study aimed to compare the two stimulation methods with respect to their potentially differential impact on subjective body orientation and on space and size distortion, in five neglect patients showing perceptual distortions. We found comparable beneficial effects during left motion stimulation and left n

[Cortical response to age-related macular degeneration (Part II). Functional MRI study].

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE AND MATERIALS: To evaluate the cortical response to visual stimulation in patients with age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), we conducted a functional MRI study in ten patients presenting unilateral or bilateral ARMD and five age-matched controls, using white flashes during activation phases (see Part I). RESULTS: After anatomical conformation, eight patients and four controls showed significant cortical hemodynamic response to monocular stimulations. Individual analysis was preferred to group evaluation, because of the differences in visual loss in a small number of p

An ERP study of the global precedence effect: the role of spatial frequency.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying the effects of removal of low spatial frequency (SF) contents from stimulus displays on the processing of global and local properties of compound stimuli. METHODS: Event-related brain potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 16 subjects who selectively attended to the global or local features of compound letters, which were either white on a gray background containing broadband SFs or were contrast-balanced (CB) to eliminate low SFs, and were randomly presented in the left or right visual fields. ERPs were analyzed to examine how

ERP abnormalities of illusory contour perception in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome is a genetic disorder in which visuo-spatial performance is poor. Theorists have claimed that the deficit lies in high-level processing, leaving low-level visual processes intact. We investigated this claim by examining an aspect of low-level processing, perceptual completion, i.e. the ability of this clinical group to perceive illusory Kanizsa squares. We then used event-related potentials to examine neural correlates of perceptual completion. While participants were able to perceive illusory contours, the neural correlates of this apparently normal perception were different

Electroencephalography in holoprosencephaly: findings in children without epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the electroencephalographic characteristics of patients with holoprosencephaly (HPE) without epilepsy. METHODS: We evaluated the electroencephalograms (EEGs) of 18 children with HPE who lacked a history of seizures. Neuroimaging studies were assessed for severity of HPE and thalamic non-separation and the presence of dorsal cysts and cortical malformations. RESULTS: Hypersynchronous theta activity occurred in 50 and 60% of EEGs during wakefulness or drowsiness/sleep, respectively, and correlated with the grade of thalamic non-separation (p<0.05). Cognitive response profile of the human fusiform face area as determined by MEG.

Activation in or near the fusiform gyrus was estimated to faces and control stimuli. Activation peaked at 165 ms and was strongest to digitized photographs of human faces, regardless of whether they were presented in color or grayscale, suggesting that face- and color-specific areas are functionally separate. Schematic sketche evoked approximately 30% less activation than did face photographs. Scrambling the locations of facial features reduced the response by approximately 25% in either hemisphere, suggesting that configurational versus analytic processing is not lateralized at this latency.

Visual function and brain organization in non-decussating retinal-fugal fibre syndrome.

Functional neuroimaging, psychophysical and electrophysiological investigations were performed in a patient with non-decussating retinal-fugal fibre syndrome, an inborn achiasmatic state in which the retinal projections of each eye map entirely to the ipsilateral primary visual cortex. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies showed that for monocularly presented simple visual stimuli, only the ipsilateral striate cortex was activated. Within each hemisphere's striate cortex, the representation of the two hemifields overlapped extensively. Despite this gross miswiring, visual funct

Quantitative criteria for predicting thyroplasty type I outcome.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the relation between preoperative glottal gap and postoperative vocal function in thyroplasty type I. Twenty-two of 64 patients who underwent thyroplasty type I between 1987 and 1994 were studied. In preoperative digitized laryngostroboscopic images, the glottal-gap, width (GGW), shape, and area were examined at the maximum closure of vibration and normalized by membranous vocal-fold length (MVFL). Postoperative vocal function analysis was performed with aerodynamic and acoustic measurements and compared with preoperative videostroboscopic images. In

Effect of dietary fat and environmental lighting on the phospholipid molecular species of rat photoreceptor membranes.

We have previously shown that retinas of albino rats adapt to bright cyclic light (500-800 lx) by lowering the levels of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) in their rod outer segment (ROS) phospholipids. In the present study, we addressed the role of dietary fat in this process. Pregnant rats were kept in 1 lx or 250 lx cyclic illuminance (12L:12D) and fed diets containing 10% (by weight) of either hydrogenated coconut oil (COC, no n-3 or n-6 fatty acids), linseed oil (LIN, n-3 and n-6 fatty acids), or safflower oil (SAF, only n-6 fatty acids), starting 4 days before delivery. Pups were weaned at

Discharge of noradrenergic locus coeruleus neurons in behaving rats and monkeys suggests a role in vigilance.

Recordings from noradrenergic locus coeruleus (LC) neurons in behaving rats and monkeys revealed that these cells decrease tonic discharge during sleep and also during certain high arousal behaviors (grooming and consumption) when attention (vigilance) was low. Sensory stimuli of many modalities phasically activated LC neurons. Response magnitudes varied with vigilance, similar to results for tonic activity. The most effective and reliable stimuli for eliciting LC responses were those that disrupted behavior and evoked orienting responses. Similar results were observed in behaving monkeys exce

Rod phototransduction modulated by bicarbonate in the frog retina: roles of carbonic anhydrase and bicarbonate exchange.

1. Effects on rod phototransduction following manipulation of retinal CO2-HCO3- and H+ fluxes were studied in dark-adapted retinas of the frog and the tiger salamander. 2. Rod photoresponses to brief flashes of light were recorded from the isolated sensory retina as electroretinogram mass receptor potentials and from isolated rods by the suction-pipette technique. The experimental treatments were: (1) varying [CO2] + [HCO3-] in the perfusion fluid: (2) applying acetazolamide (AAA), which inhibits the enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA); and (3) applying 4,4'-diisothiocyanatostilbene-2,2'-disulphoni

Actions of excitatory amino acids on brisk ganglion cells in the cat retina.

1. Retinal ganglion cell activity was recorded extracellularly in the intact cat eye. We examined the effects of iontophoretically applied glutamate (GLU), aspartate (ASP), and the specific agonists kainate (KA), quisqualate (QQ), (RS)-alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole-propionic acid (AMPA), and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) on the spontaneous and light-driven activity of ganglion cells. 2. ASP and GLU increased the spontaneous as well as the light-driven activity of all brisk cell types. The effects of the two drugs were very similar. The activity of most cells remained at a constant i

Hippocampal demyelination is associated with increased magnetic susceptibility in a mouse model of concussion.

Structural and functional deficits in the hippocampus are a prominent feature of moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). In this work, we investigated the potential of Quantitative Susceptibility Imaging (QSM) to reveal the temporal changes in myelin integrity in a mouse model of concussion (mild TBI). We employed a cross-sectional design wherein we assigned 43 mice to cohorts undergoing either a concussive impact or a sham procedure, with QSM imaging at day 2, 7, or 14 post-injury, followed by Luxol Fast Blue (LFB) myelin staining to assess the structural integrity of hippocampal white

Visual processing patterns of adults with traumatic brain injury when viewing image-based grids and visual scenes.

Many individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) rely on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) supports to meet functional communication needs. The use of images to display message content may be advantageous for this population, given deficits in literacy, visual processing, and cognition. Grid and visual scene displays are two options for presenting images within AAC systems. Eye-tracking technology was utilized to evaluate the visual processing patterns of 13 adults with a history of TBI and 13 adults without TBI when interpreting themes depicted in grid and visual scene displa
