Ten chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients were treated with partially pure alpha interferon (IFN-alpha) at doses ranging from 3-9 X 10(6) units administered intramuscularly daily. Of these patients, three patients with disease stages 0, 1, and 3 (and prolymphocytic leukemia), respectively, responded with partial remissions lasting from 10 to 24+ months; four additional patients had minor responses. A randomised pilot study is reported of d(15)+Be neutrons compared with 4 MV photons in the treatment of patients with astrocytoma. Sixteen patients were treated by photons and 18 by neutrons. Both treatments were well tolerated by patients. The median survival after photons was 11 months and after neutrons, 7 months. It was demonstrated that four of nine patients treated by neutrons had evidence at autopsy of radiation-induced brain damage. All had residual cancer. No patient treated by photons had signs of radiation-related morbidity. The trial was, therefore, discontinued prematurely.

The antiemetic activity of escalating doses of droperidol was evaluated in ten patients undergoing chemotherapy with cisplatin regimens. Major antiemetic activity was achieved in five patients, two patients had less nausea and vomiting as compared with prior prochlorperazine therapy, and three patients were refractory to droperidol. No dose-response relationship was observed. Sedation occurred in nine patients, and two patients experienced dystonic reactions. Droperidol is a relatively safe and effective antiemetic for patients undergoing chemotherapy with cisplatin.

A phase II pilot study of amsacrine in refractory adult acute leukemia was conducted by the Southeastern Cancer Study Group from May 1979 to August 1980. Amsacrine, 90 mg/m2, was given daily for 5-8 days to 45 patients with acute myeloblastic leukemia, 15 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and six patients with blastic transformation of chronic granulocytic leukemia. An outbreak of typhoid fever in the largest refugee camp of the besieged capital of Phnom-Penh, Cambodia, and availability of a locally manufactured Anti-Tetanus-Typhoid-Paratyphoid vaccine prompted us to test the practicability of a mass immunization campaign by carrying out a trial in the smaller, well delineated refugee camp of Pochentong. The value of an epidemiologic approach to the diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis was assessed in a pilot study of an Amerind population. In 103 adult volunteers aged 20 to 42 years on a Cree reservation lumbar flexion and chest expansion were measured and HLA typing was performed on peripheral blood lymphocytes. Of the 14 subjects with HLA-B27, 2 had radiologic evidence of sacroiliitis but none could be said to have definite ankylosing spondylitis on clinical grounds.
