[Prevention of spinal injuries at the work place].

Work-related back problems can be induced by a fixed and forced posture, heavy manual labour, climatic factors, and exposure to partial and whole-body vibration. In most cases, a combination of factors are involved. Fixed and forced postures can be avoided by a better arrangement of the workplace and by individual measures. Technical progress has diminished the number of workplaces requiring heavy manual labour. In the remaining jobs, however, appropriate techniques for lifting and back-relief must be taught. Today the prevention of sitting-induced back lesions is very important; the use of ad…

[Locomotor and cardiorespiratory impairments after retirement in relation to certain occupational exposures during working life].

The relationships between locomotor and cardiorespiratory impairments and occupational exposures during working life were examined, using a sample of 627 retired persons in the greater Paris area. Among men, there was a significant statistical association between carrying heavy weights and locomotor impairment. There were also significant associations between exposure to toxic products, tiring postures and vibrations and cardiorespiratory impairment among men. Concerning women, associations between exposure to dust and tiring postures during working life and cardiorespiratory impairment were o…

Determinants of standing 1 month after stroke in a large cohort: motor weakness, lateropulsion, and hypoesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Recovering standing balance after a stroke is an important milestone. However, the factors that affect post-stroke quiet standin … f individuals do not stand or stand with difficulty, a proportion stable for 20 years. The standing posture should be considered more explicitly in modern post-stroke balance assessments, with more manageable postural tasks. The clinical profile of individuals with difficulty standing or inability to stand combines impairments in the elementary motor comm …

Neurophysiological underpinnings of balance control and cognitive-motor interaction in early Parkinson's disease.

People with Parkinson's Disease (PD) often compensate for impaired automatic balance control by engaging additional attentional resources for motor tasks. With disease progression, their cognitive system too becomes increasingly affected, further impairing postural stability. The interaction between cognitive and motor systems in the early disease stages, however, remains poorly investigated. The present study aimed to elucidate behavioral and neurophysiological changes in early-stage PD to identify with greater accuracy the specific disease-related discrepancies from healthy functioning on bo

The impact of combined aerobic and resistance exercise on the prognosis of early Parkinson's disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Although literature suggests that exercise can improve symptoms in Parkinson's Disease (PD) patients, research on the effects of aerobic exercise and resistance training (AE&RT) in early-stage PD remains limited. Understanding the synergistic effects of these exercise modalities can provide valuable insights for optimizing exercise interventions for PD patients, particularly in the early stages of the disease, where interventions may have the greatest impact on long-term functional outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a combined AE&RT program on moto

Impact of Plantar Massage and Ankle Mobilization on Visual Reliance in Those With Chronic Ankle Instability: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

CONTEXT: Those with chronic ankle instability (CAI) rely more on visual information to maintain postural control. Plantar massage and ankle joint mobilization are moderately successful at improving CAI-associated postural control impairments. Manual therapies may have a larger influence on the underlying sensory strategy used to maintain postural control, but their effect on these strategies remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of separate 2-week plantar massage and ankle joint mobilization interventions on estimates of visual reliance during single-limb stance in those with CA

Standing versus supine pelvic incidence in adult lumbar spondylolisthesis.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic incidence (PI) has been considered a morphological spinopelvic parameter, but this has been questioned by some experts in recent years. There is little research on whether PI changes with posture in patients with spondylolisthesis. This study thus examined the variation of PI in patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis under different postures. METHODS: This cross-sectional retrospective analysis included 110 patients with spondylolisthesis meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria and hospitalized in Sichuan Province Orthopedic Hospital between January 2023 and January 20…

Age-based stereotype threat effects on dynamic balance in healthy older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Stereotype threat can lead older adults to perceive their experiences in a biased manner, giving rise to interfering thoughts and negative emotions that generate stress and anxiety. Negative beliefs about aging may serve as an additional factor that increases the need for attentional demand, potentially resulting in a performance level below their actual capabilities. In the present study, we asked whether negative aging stereotypes influence a dynamic balance task and explored the means to counteract them in healthy elderly participants. METHODS: The performance of balance was

Assessment of balance in people with mild traumatic brain injury using a balance systems model approach.

PURPOSE: Measuring persistent imbalance after mTBI is challenging and may include subjective symptom-reporting as well as clinical scales. Clinical assessments for quantifying balance following mTBI have focused on sensory orientation. It is theorized that balance control goes beyond sensory orientation and also includes subdomains of anticipatory postural adjustments, reactive postural control, and dynamic gait. The Mini Balance Evaluation Systems Test (Mini-BESTest) is a validated balance test that measures balance according to these subdomains for a more comprehensive assessment. The purpos

Balance Impairments in Patients with Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 Infection.

The human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a retrovirus from the Retroviridae family that infects cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4) T-lymphocytes and stimulates their proliferation. A severe consequence of this infection can be the HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), which is associated with a progressive demyelinating disease of the upper motor neurons. The HAM/TSP conditions frequently present with neurological complaints such as gait impairment, sphincter disturbances, and several sensory losses. We compared findings from the posturographic eval
