A comparison of a handheld minicomputer and an external graphics processing unit in performing 3D intraoral scans.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Whether the use of an external graphics processing unit (eGPU) and a handheld computer prolongs the operation time for 3-dimensional (3D) intraoral scanning or produces clinically unacceptable scans is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the 3D intraoral scan accuracy and scan time of a small portable device and an eGPU with desktop-grade workstations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A handheld computer, a laptop, a desktop workstation, and an external graphics card were used to scan a 3D printed set of maxillary and mandibular casts 10 consecutive

Improving structural damage tolerance and fracture energy via bamboo-inspired void patterns.

Bamboo has a functionally-graded microstructure that endows it with a combination of desirable properties, such as high failure strain, high toughness, and a low density. As a result, bamboo has been widely used in load-bearing structures. In this work, we study the use of bamboo-inspired void patterns to geometrically improve the failure properties of structures made from brittle polymers. We perform finite element analysis and experiments on 3D-printed structures to quantify the effect of the shape and spatial distribution of voids on the fracture behavior. The introduction of periodic, unif

Tailoring the mechanical properties of macro-porous PVA hydrogels for biomedical applications.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a biocompatible biopolymer with superior dimensional and mechanical stability when compared to naturally available biomaterials such as collagen and gelatin. Furthermore, PVA in hydrogel form behaves non-linearly during mechanical loading, generating a response like soft biological tissues. Generally, PVA hydrogels are fabricated using freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) and changing the number of FTCs gives control over its mechanical properties. Porosity of the hydrogel is another important factor which determines its mechanical properties and is also evident in biological s

Carbon fiber/microlattice 3D hybrid architecture as multi-scale scaffold for tissue engineering.

Multiscale 3D carbon architectures are of particular interest in tissue engineering applications, as these structures may allow for three-dimensional cell colonization essential for tissue growth. In this work, carbon fiber/microlattice hybrid architectures are introduced as innovative multi-scale scaffolds for tissue engineering. The microlattice provides the design freedom and structural integrity, whereas the fibrous component creates a cellular microenvironment for cell colonization. The hybrid structures are fabricated by carbonization of stereolithographically 3D printed epoxy microlatti

PrintrLab incubator: A portable and low-cost CO2 incubator based on an open-source 3D printer architecture.

Growth in open-source hardware designs combined with the decreasing cost of high-quality 3D printers have supported a resurgence of in-house custom lab equipment development. Herein, we describe a low-cost (< $400), open-source CO2 incubator. The system is comprised of a Raspberry Pi computer connected to a 3D printer controller board that has controls for a CO2 sensor, solenoid valve, heater, and thermistors. CO2 is supplied through the sublimation of dry ice stored inside a thermos to create a sustained 5% CO2 supply. The unit is controlled via G-Code commands sent by the Raspberry Pi to the

Dexamethasone loaded bilayered 3D tubular scaffold reduces restenosis at the anastomotic site of tracheal replacement: in vitro and in vivo assessments.

Despite recent developments in the tracheal tissue engineering field, the creation of a patient specific substitute possessing both appropriate mechanical and biointerfacial properties remains challenging. Most tracheal replacement therapies fail due to restenosis at the anastomosis site. In this study, we designed a robust, biodegradable, 3D tubular scaffold by combining electrospinning (ELSP) and 3D (three-dimensional) printing techniques for use in transplantation therapy. After that, we loaded dexamethasone (DEX) onto the 3D tubular scaffold using mild surface modification reactions by usi…

Implementation of a semiautomatic method to design patient-specific instruments for corrective osteotomy of the radius.

PURPOSE: 3D-printed patient-specific instruments (PSIs), such as surgical guides and implants, show great promise for accurate navigation in surgical correction of post-traumatic deformities of the distal radius. However, existing costs of computer-aided design and manufacturing process prevent everyday surgical use. In this paper, we propose an innovative semiautomatic methodology to streamline the PSIs design. METHODS: The new method was implemented as an extension of our existing 3D planning software. It facilitates the design of a regular and smooth implant and a companion guide starting

Monodisperse Polymer Optical Microresonators as a Versatile Platform for Protein-Conjugated Biocompatible Optical Probes.

Optical microresonators have attracted increasing attention as next-generation miniature optical probes for biological sensing, but their practical applications remain limited by insufficient biocompatibility and limited chemical functionalizability at the surface. Here, we report polymer-based optical microresonators (MR) as a surface-functionalizable and biocompatible platform for covalently anchoring biofunctional molecules. Highly spherical and monodisperse polystyrene MR were prepared by inkjet printing and conjugated with guest molecules using Sulfo-SANPAH as a heterobifunctional cross-l…

One-step encoding of quasi-continuous compositional and structural gradients in melt electrowritten scaffolds for osteochondral regeneration.

Engineering osteochondral scaffolds with continuous gradients remains a central challenge in regenerative medicine. Here, we present a one-step melt electrowriting (MEW) strategy to encode quasi-continuous compositional and structural gradients in poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds. By sequentially loading nanohydroxyapatite (nHA)-laden PCL melts, a predefined mineral gradient is preserved during printing, yielding a continuous decrease in nHA content across the scaffold thickness. This gradient intrinsically drives a concomitant reduction in fiber diameter, thereby recapitulating the native…

Printable van der Waals Nanoparticles for Additive Technologies.

The growing demand for high-performance, nanoscale building blocks for printing technologies necessitates a scalable method to produce clean, stable nano-inks without performance-degrading additives. Layered van der Waals (vdW) materials are promising candidates due to their unique properties and can be used to create such nano-inks. Current approaches often rely on surfactant residues or high-boiling point solvents to achieve colloidal stability, which can be incompatible with chemically sensitive substrates. A robust methodology based on pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) provides a pure…
